Bookstore owner Baylee Anderson worked her ass off to get her store up and running. Living in the wilds of Montana, in the small town of Hangman’s Haunt, the population isn’t massive and tourism is pretty non-existent. Nevertheless, her dream is alive and flourishing. Spending most of her precious spare time with her childhood friends in a clearing the locals call Hangman’s Copse, a place rumored … rumored to be haunted by all manner of ghosts and ghouls, myths and legends, Baylee is grounded, stuck in a rut she loves.
When tall, dark and brooding Daxon Gillies walks through her shop door, Baylee finds herself drawn to him by the arching currents of carnal attraction between them. After a brief and rudely interrupted make-out session, Baylee wants to know the sinfully attractive Daxon better.
From there, their fledgling romance hits an unexpected snag…
Daxon of the Gillies clan hails from California–a long way from the chilly mountain ranges of Hangman’s Haunt. He has a mission; to track down and return his youngest brother Kaiyan to the safety of home territory. His brother, however, seems determined to elude Daxon’s attempts, and Daxon finds himself torn between finding Kaiyan and fighting the delicious distraction Baylee presents.
Not to mention, Daxon’s hiding a little secret…

Kay Elle Parker has given us an interesting paranormal world. This book tends to focus primarily on shifters, which are different to werewolves. Shifters are born and can generally shift to a variety of animals. Some shifters, like our hero Daxxon, are genetically limited to a certain kind of animal. Daxon is limited to felines and likes the panther the most. The shifters aren’t tied to the moon the way that werewolves are.
The story in general tends to focus on a small town in Montana, Hangman’s Haunt, and around 4 friends who are nearly sisters, Baylee, Cassie, Alix, and Brenna. Wild is Baylee’s book.
Baylee is a 30 year old virgin. She owns a bookstore in town. One day, Daxon walks into her store and she just becomes wildly attracted to him immediately. This isn’t anything she normally does, so the fact that she is feeling this way is totally confusing to her. But when he asks her for a date, and then comes back and closing time to make out with her, she’s all good with it.
Dax is the oldest son of the Gillies Clan. He is meant to rule after his father. He’s shown up to this small Montana town with its rumors of ghosts and haunts and spooky things to find his younger brother Kaiyan. Kaiyan likes to run away from the family. Frankly, knowing what I know about his father, I don’t freaking blame him. Then, Dax walks into the bookstore and sees Baylee and knows that he’s found his mate, even though he has to walk away from her.
OMG, intense story. There are some really horrible spots in the book, places where I couldn’t help but cry my eyes out. There were also places where I got really mad on Baylee’s behalf. I’m telling you, there are times when people really sucked in this book. However, there are also some really bright and shining times, which more than make up for the horrible places.
This is my first book by this author and it won’t be my last. It is alway a bit of a gamble when you read something from an author you have never read before, but it paid off. I loved this book.
It is well written, fast paced with lots of twist and turns, engaging characters, very steamy and emotional. Once I started reading i couldn’t stop. It is quite a ride.
Baylee is a wonderful characters, smart, loves book and has a good heart. I loved how she stood up for herself, even against her friends, and did what felt right for her.
Daxon was a wonderful dominant, but also kind hearted guy. He and Baylee were just so right for eachother.
And I loved all the interaction with their other half so to speak.
This isn’t your average PNR book. It is a bit different and it is a good length book. so there is plenty of time to tell the story.
I was gifted a copy of this.
OMG first chapter has you hooked you don’t want to put it down.. I couldn’t sleep.. its a must read
Have you ever been blow away from reading the first chapter in a book?
Ever turned pages so fast because you were so anxious to read how the story unfolded?
Have you ever finished a book and said, “wow, that was awesome”?
And then want to go back and re-read it?
Ever wanted book two so damn bad because you are so caught up in the characters
and have to find out asap what happens to the next heroine?
Well, now you know how I feel.
Ms Parker has written an amazing story of four besties, Baylee, Allix, Brenna and Cassie, who met in kindergarten.
As adults they meet at a circle in the middle of a woodland area known as Hangman’s Copse.
Sitting on couches they carried in with a roaring fire blazing as they carry on conversations into the early mornings.
Baylee (Bay) owns a bookstore. One day, in walks a customer named Daxson (Dax) who she says
looks “edible in black.” They both feel an instant spark. He tells her he’ll be back to take her to dinner.
But fate crosses their path in the woods. Part of him is smitten. They have sex on the very couch in the woods where
he also bites her neck. Which leads to having after effects that both Bay and Dax did not anticipate.
This is where I stop because you need to read the rest of the book to feel what Ms. Parker wrote. I saw a movie
playing in front of me with a great cast of characters. Suspenseful, humorous, drama filled and instant heat make
this story a five plus star read in my opinion.
Thankfully book two (Nocturnal) will be released later this month. I will devour that story as well.
3.5 stars
This story had so many things going for it. The mystery and intrigue around the town. The surprises of who and what these shifters turned into and what they did to protect their kind. The discord among the family and the rift that happened after bringing in an outsider. Stir that all together and WOW…but then, BDSM…why?
I’m not a prude, I loved 50 SofG just as much as everyone else, but in my opinion this story did not need that element. Even to the point where the main character had a playroom. Shifters are naturally alpha, this story did not need the D/s element.
So many wonderful things, strong heroines and super alpha males….yes, all the makings of a stellar series. If BDSM is your thing, you’re going to love this! The next book will feature a new couple, I may give it a try.
Brilliant Series Starter!!
Friendship that you can rely on. A scintillating romance. Survival of your shifter clan. “Baylee was fire. She burned bright, and when they came together sparks flew. Literally. He’d felt them running beneath her skin, dancing wildly in the flames of her passion”.
Risking all to be with the one fate has determined is yours. Touching, Exciting and wonderfully written!!
*** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book ***
I LOVED this book! It was so good! It was a great story with awesome characters!
A fantastic, intricately weaved story. The characters and storyline are well written. There’s plenty of steam, action, twists and turns. With this fast paced read you’ll be pulled in from the beginning until the very end. Be prepared for a roller coaster of a ride with this tale that will not disappoint.
Paranormal shifter romances can be hit or miss, but this was definitely a HIT! I could really relate to Baylee’s character, bookish and sweet, usually playing it safe. Yet, she and Daxon cannot deny the deeply rooted attraction between them. It’s carnal and oh so sexy, but she has no idea just how much her life would change! I loved this high-octane story, the first in the series. The world-building and descriptions set the scenes so well, and the characters all helped to make this a great read! I look forward to the next book!
For adult readers only due to sexual content.
Bayley and her 3 friends have been together since they were young. They all live in a small town called Hangman’s Haunt. Bayley is 30 , and the oldest of the group, she is also a virgin. Bayley has put pretty much all her money into her book store, that was her dream, she loves, she’s a bit of a nerd. Bayley has never really been all that attracted to a guy anyway, until Daxon walks into her little store.
Daxon is a shifter, the first born son or his clan’s alpha, next in line to rule the clan. Dax’s father sent him out to find his youngest brother, who likes to run off from time to time. Dax had no desire to find his mate until his panther caught the sent of Bayley.
I really liked this story! Dax and his clan can turn into more than one animal, that awesome! Not all of their offspring become shifters, it’s something about DNA and genetics, which it explained it the story, luv that. The shifters in this story can NOT change a human in this story, there has to be special circumstances to due with genetics that are explained in the story, luv that. Bayley has 3 best friends which are mentioned often and most of the time are the most like, I luv that I have an extreme dislike for her friend Allix. There so many more things to like about this one.
Well written, great characters, well edited, action, adventure, hunky man, steamy sex scenes, strong woman who aren’t afraid to fight for what’s theirs, and romance. A great start to the series, I’ll be reading book two.
