I have read every novel in this series which has an original premise and world building. I did not want the book to end and hope there are more books to come in this series.
Another book in the Others series, this book, while very good was also sad and felt a little unfinished. Characters that I liked died and while other characters needed more story because I felt like they were not finished yet. I am hopng that this leads to another Others book set in the town of Bennett so that we can see what happens next!
I enjoyed this book as much as every other book in this series because Anne Bishop is an exceptional author and a wonderful world builder. I will always read everything she writes. The story line has tragedy, tenseness and great characters that just keep you reading until the end, which is why I always have to start these on the evening before the weekend.
This was BY FAR the BEST book in the entire Other/World of Others series. Unlike Lakeside that was an established terra indigene community within a human town, Bennett is being established as a mixed species town from the get-go. Of course, mischief and mayhem ensues with the rapid growing pains. On that note, LOOOVVVEEE VIRGIL!!!!! My fave Other ever!!! But my heart is absolutely breaking for him about Kane. I hope Nicholai is going to be ok in later books too!
Anyway, I loved the world building that Bishop creates; one of the best features of the book. I really hope that Bishop spends the next few books focusing on Bennett like she did with Lakeside. There is so much more story to be told about the rebuilding.
Audiobook review: 3 stars for story & 5 stars for narrating. The story itself was entertaining but was pretty much singular focused around the Blackstone. There was one side event involving Meg Corbin. Most of the characters are likable and believable. Alexandra Harris did an excellent job with narrating!
As always Anne Bishop delivers. This is another of the books in the World of the Others. These later books are not as powerful as the first three, but they are well written, the characters are just as engaging, and the continuing story of this world is deeply satisfying.
Like every other book Anne Bishop has written, Wild Country is fabulous!! She has a marvelous ability to describe a scene/situation/character in a few words, which still gives the reader a sense they are actually there. I learned about Bishop from a staff member at Barnes & Noble, who noticed what I was purchasing and suggested I might like the Black Jewels trilogy. I’ve been hooked ever since!! If you enjoy a world of shifters, vampires, and other fantasy beings, living in a world parallel to the one we know, you’ll love this series!!
Bennett’s human citizens were wiped out by the terre indigene’s Elders in the purge after the Humans First and Last movement failed. It is being allowed to rebuild with a mix of humans, Intuits, and Terre Indigene who will run the town. When word gets out that it is being re-settled with people who will work a trade and run businesses, there is an influx of people who wish to live there. Will humanity rear it’s ugly head again? Well, this is an Others book, so yes, but the story is fascinating and our group of townspeople band together to eliminate the threat that may live among them.
Wild Country was one of my most anticipated books this year and it did not disappoint! A few characters were familiar from Lakeside, but their world that was shook up from the purge changed things dramatically. Humans are required to prove themselves with hard work and an unselfishness that does not come naturally to some of humanity. Our main characters are the exception and the way they rebuild trust is proof again that not all of humanity is corrupt.
There were so many sub plots running through Wild Country that it’s hard to choose a favorite. I loved human Deputy Jana’s need for approval from her Sheriff Virgil Wolfgard, who does not trust humans after his pack was slaughtered at their hands. When he starts to treat her as pack, and she allows and understands it, my favorite moment of this book is created. Another great sub plot is between Jesse, an older intuit woman who is treated with some honor by the terre indigene, and Tolya Sanguinati mayor of Bennett. Tolya, just like Vlad in the Lakeside Others series, is intrigued by some of the more basic emotions in humans and with Jesse there is a trust that has been developed by working together on this project. I’m not sure where their relationship will lead, but I’ll admit that I too am intrigued and can’t wait to find out. If there’s another book in this series that is!
All of the sub plots in this book eventually intertwine and lead to a final conflict that will again leave the question of how and will the terre indigene allow humanity to exist. Will the good folk in Bennett outweigh the bad? I really liked Lake Silence, the first novel in this new Others series, but Wild Country takes us back to why we love this world so much. Yes, humanity can be just awful, but these novels also shine a light on what makes humanity wonderful too. It’s those moments and contradictions that keep me coming back to this intriguing world.
I absolutely love this series! First if you’ve not read Etched in Bone there are spoilers in this book so be forewarned. I very much enjoyed the glimpses that we have gotten of Bennett and Prairie Good especially in previous books so to see the resettlement of the former is quite exciting. This book is a wonderful addition to the series!
I absolutely love the amazing world Anne Bishop has created for The Others series. The paranormal beings aren’t romanticized and shown in a heroic light. They are something to be afraid of because they will always protect their own first. They don’t think or act like humans. They are and always will be predators. If you have read the previous books then some names will sound familiar but there are also a lot of new faces. Expect multiple POVs, but I have come to realize that I really love seeing how each character is thinking and why they are acting a certain way. There are multiple story-lines but the author did an incredible job in weaving it into one book.
“We are here. We are different but we stand united to protect our home. We are different but we protect our families, whether they are families by blood or by heart. We are different but we are not alone. Never alone. We are here.”
Wild Country was action-packed, suspenseful, funny, heartbreaking, ruthless, original, and very intriguing. I loved the thought process and seeing how the Others reacted to certain situations. The confrontations between different beings was very interesting and it sometimes had me on the edge of my seat. I am just so invested in this world and characters. This book was unpredictable and had my attention from start until finish. I just hope we will get a lot more books set in this unique fantasy world, because I can’t wait to see how this world and the relationships will develop further.
