He’s come home for revenge. .Everything was going fine in Jack’s life…until she showed up. He was living the high life in a European court, friend to princes and courtesans alike, learning witty repertoire and interesting new ways to kill enemies, and then this cute little package claiming to be a Pinkerton agent–a Pinkerton!–lands in his lap. That wouldn’t have been so bad–she’s really … have been so bad–she’s really quite delectable–except she’s bringing a message from his mother, and now duty demands Jack Hoyle return to the home he hasn’t thought of in years.
Tavie Smothers is a master–mistress?–of disguise. The talent has served her well during her years with the Pinkertons, but this case is officially her last. Mr. Augustus King is holding the entire town of Black Aces, Montana, hostage; bleeding the business owners and families dry in his effort to fool potential investors into thinking his silver mine is still salable. Everything he’s doing is legal…but Tavie can’t stand by and let him win.
So she brings in a wild card.
Mr. King might understand poker, but he’s never encountered an opponent like Jack. Because Jack, despite his unorthodox methods and his cold refinement, is determined to avenge his father’s death and protect the town’s legacy. Add in an equally resolute ex-Pinkerton in disguise, and they’re betting on a sure thing.
But there are no sure things in love and poker, and Mr. King still has an ace up his sleeve….

I really enjoyed this book and the other two of Black Aces. This one really beat the bad guy and got the freedom the townsfolk deserve after all they suffered under one man’s hand along with his henchmen. I loved this fantastic hero and the lady Pinkerton agent who tracked him down across the world to bring him back to his home town to revenge his father’s death and to free the town of rental fees they were being charged by this unscrupulous man and the burning down of businesses and homes if they were late paying.
This was the best book of the three and the three precursors as well. All in all, these stories are all ones you will want to read.
I hope this author will continue with at least a few more books to finally see if this town really does come back to life and to how the families we’ve come to love are doing and if justice does finally get served. This story and all the previous ones are highly recommended.
Disguised as a wealthy investor Jack come home to help the people in his hometown. Tavie, a former Pinkerton agent found him overseas and now moved to Black Aces to help the people and Jack to get rid of King, the town villain. Will they succeed in a legal way?
This is a satisfying conclusion of this series. Well written book with great chemistry between the main characters.
I recommend this whole series.
4stars. Still having problems with saving the ratings. Love this series.
A Pinkerton Agent that is a master of disguise, a mysterious man in a black cape that fights for justice and a love story set in the old West. What more could you ask for? As usual, Caroline Lee, spins a fast moving story that will keep you fully engaged from the first word to the last. Don’t miss this final book in the Black Aces series!
I’m really enjoying this series and Wild Card is the best yet. A great story with great characters. I loved Tavie and Jack and was routing for them to get together and Jack to save the town. I was captivated from the beginning and left with a smile.
I have enjoyed visiting in Black Aces since the book, Lucas’s Lady, and I hope that we can visit these friends again even if the town no longer needs their hero. Caroline Lee always has well developed story lines and characters and this book is no exception. Keeping Jonathan Douglas’ various identities secret had to have been a challenge in a small town such as Black Aces. Tavie is not the usual heroine and is perfect for keeping Jonathan/Jack on his toes. This book is fun to read and has plenty of action. I do recommend you read at least the other two Black Aces book prior to reading this one, it will make it much more enjoyable. Thank you for a good series.
The conclusion if this fantastic series, and what a conclusion it is. Lots of action, twists and turns as only a master story teller can handle. Be sure to start with the first and read in order, to get the most out of the series
I really liked reading this book.
It’s compelling & moving.
Jack, is in Black Aces, to right a wrong.
Tavie, a mysterious chameleon,
is there too keep him safe from himself.
King, is a swindling blackguard.
He has been controlling the town,
with his greed & dishonesty.
It’s a enjoyable story about the love
of family & respect of friends.
Jack & Tavie’s emotions, humor & their chemistry kept me hooked, till the end.
A MUST READ!!
This was a dark romance between a violent man set on revenge against King and a former Pinkerton female spy. Both are chameleons who are willing to do whatever it takes to become the character they have taken on. She is more skilled in blending in and becoming someone else than him. I loved that he used martial arts to defend himself and could bend his body in amazing ways by using the control he learned. It was great to catch up with the characters from the previous books in this action-packed series conclusion.
