Rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows: Rule 1: Be a widow. Rule 2: Have an impeccable reputation. Rule 3: Don’t fall in love again.Coming in October: Three Regency Romances by Rebecca Connolly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore AN HEIR TO SPARE by Rebecca ConnollyWidowhood has changed much for Anna—Lady Lyndham—but an unconventional heir to the estate was not something she had … unconventional heir to the estate was not something she had anticipated. Nor had she anticipated that he would have no intention of forcing her out, although he has every right to. And she certainly did not anticipate finding him handsome, charming, and unfailingly generous. But Ned Richards, the new Lord Lyndham, has a world of surprises in store for her, and not anticipating them will become quite the adventure.
THE WIDOW OF LAVENDER COTTAGE by Jen Geigle Johnson
As a widow, Lillian Hunter has never been in love and plans to never marry again, so the rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows suit her just fine. Her days are spent attempting to transform her newly inherited Lavender Cottage into a livable space until Oliver Wentworth shows up, asking for her late husband. Anxious to establish himself as a landed gentry in Somerset, Oliver is none too pleased to discover that a widow lives alone in a tiny run down cottage bordering his new property. The fact that she’s young and attractive only adds frustration to his sense of responsibility over her. And confound her, she challenges his every attempt to help manage her affairs.
A PROMISE FORGOTTEN by Heather B. Moore
Charlotte Ashford never thought she’d marry a vicar, and she never thought she’d find herself widowed with a young child to care for on her own. She certainly never thought she’d return to Somerset to live with her mother again, and Charlotte never thought she’d see him again. But Lord Wilshore has never forgotten her, and he has never forgotten their promise made long ago. Charlotte would love nothing more than for Lord Wilshore to forgive her, but too much heartache and too much time might make that impossible. Friendship is all she can hope for, but that hope may be dashed as well.

I loved how this group of authors used the connecting theme of widowhood to bind their stories together. I have not read many stories from the Regency period based on widows and I liked the newness of this concept.
Lady Johanna Kingswood has put together a society of newly widowed women. She wanted to educate them, so they could navigate the rest of their lives without being used or neglected as they had been in the past.
This was an exceptional group of authors. Each story is unique and approaches love from a different viewpoint. These stories are clean reads and are well edited.
I recommend this anthology to readers who enjoy clean regency romances. I received an advance copy from the authors. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own.
An Heir to Spare
Rebecca Connolly
Rating: 5 stars
This story was amazing! I loved the main characters, Anna and Ned. So much so, that I hated this story to end. This story is a must read.
The Widow of Lavender Cottage
Jen Geigle Johnson
Rating: 4.5 stars
This was a sweet romance between Lillian and Oliver. These characters were fully developed and reading about them brought deep satisfaction.
A Promise Forgotten
Heather B. Moore
Rating: 4.5 stars
Charlotte and Brand missed the opportunity of being married in their youth because of an unforeseen shipwreck. They have now been thrown back together. Will they take their second chance?
Widows of Somerset was a relaxing, fun read. I felt like it was an easy summer read. It was fun to get swept up into the characters’ world. The authors, Rebecca Connolly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore, collaborated on the setting and the characters. Some of the characters carried through from story to story. The characters that were shared within stories remained constant in character and personality. The romances were simple and engaging. I could have used more detail and the pace felt off at times, but other than that it was a decent read. The stories were clean. Readers who enjoy the Regency romance genre will enjoy this read.
Please note that I received a free copy to review, however, this is my honest opinion.
Let me start off by saying I’m not a fan of novellas. I hate having a rushed story that doesn’t build the characters or the plot line. I had low expectations going into this book. I was surprised when I was hooked right away. After finishing the first story I was worried the next two wouldn’t measure up but ALL 3 were AMAZING. I didn’t feel cheated at all. I loved all three and blew through the whole book in a day. Each story had a unique plot line but they were all remotely connected by the widows secret society. This was a great book- worth the read.
Excellent read! I was a little worried that it would be repetitive with three stories about widows in the same “secret society” but they really pulled it off well! So much that I’d like to read about more of those society members! Fun, clean, sweet romance novellas!
What does inheriting a house with someone already in it and a property dispute between neighbors and being shipwrecked have in common? That is why you need to read this sweet book of three young widows in a trying time.
The three authors hold up to their usual standards and write great plot lines and characters.
It was a fun read and I highly recommend it!
A Secret Society of Widows
Three stories of young widows who have been left without much means to provide for themselves. A secret society that teaches the group of widows how to manage their affairs in a man’s world. And rules. One being – No falling in love if they get remarried. One loses their senses when in love and doesn’t think of the future. Love can come later. So what happens when these widows do fall in love? How do they safeguard themselves for the future?
Enjoyed reading these three short stories. Liked the common thread of the widows society between the three, but each written in their own style. Have read books by all three authors before (love them all!) and these stories mesh well together for having different writers.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
A sweet, clean collection of stories about widows who find themselves in less than ideal circumstances — who manage to find independence AND love, thanks to Lady Joanna, who’s been there, done that, and wants to help other unfortunate women.
Rebecca Connelly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore are all masters at the regency romance novella, managing to pull me in right from the start and keep me interested.
I was given an ARC, and would happily recommend this set.
