There are good writers and then there are authors that leave you in awe. Cathrina Constantine just left me awestruck! The story didn’t quite leave off on a cliffhanger but it was close. It was just enough to leave the reader gasping for air and cheering for the beloved characters all at the same time. So many times the story took a sharp turn and shocked me to my core. Usually I can gauge where the story will go but not this time. Wickedly It Begins actually has a unique storyline, at least compared to the paranormal/fantasy books I’ve read recently. There was a heavy religious theme to it, as it is wholly about good vs. evil, but it didn’t feel like I was being pushed into any certain religion. I can’t wait to read the next installment!
First time in coming across this author with the story capturing my attention. Seeley is quite the character whom also is a hunter. Things that threatens humans is the ones she goes after. Special gifts is what enables her to do this. She has a guardian angel Ezekiel and together they have alot of trials. We are also introduced to Jack and he is a talent that is found by the darkside I would say. He gets taken and tutored by Asa whom is rich also. Then after all that we see a force begin that is like a magnet which keeps us flipping the pages as this gem unfolds. But alas this is only the beginning.
I have read the first book in this series, enjoyed it quite a bit, and was thrilled when this one appeared as a lead-in to the series. It not only was as exciting and engaging as I’d hoped but gave wonderful extra insight when revisiting book one.
Seeley is a demon hunter, and since as long as she can remember has been trained and mentored by her guardian angel. Now, she’s about to graduate high school—a ‘normal’ life she’s never felt that she’s really a part of—and is still unclear what she wants in life, since she is a demon hunter through and through. During her usual visits to the local church, she runs into the mysterious Jack. Although she’s never had the slightest interest in guys, this one is different. Not only is she drawn to him, it’s a pull she can’t refuse. But he’s harboring more than a few secrets.
This book packs as much action, romance and danger as the other book I’ve read and was one I couldn’t put down. Seeley is easy to root for and like. She does have amazing demon fighting skills and harbors more than a few other talents, but she’s still unsure and, by no means, always comes out on top of every battle. Her uncertainty for usual human life around her adds a nice twist and is understandable. She has a lot to learn.
I really enjoy the sense of friendship and family in this book. While Seeley has to keep a lot of secrets from her parents, they know about her calling to a certain degree and support her in so much as they can. Even the priest stands at her side with loving guidance or warnings. As for her guardian angel…well, after reading this book, I think everyone will wish they had one just like him. His loyalty and love is warming, and gives Seeley an inspiring foundation.
Then, we have the romance, which is a definite tug-of-war. There is the ‘love at first sight’, but it works since this couple has a huge, upward battle. It’s clear that even if this relationship works out, it’s never going to be sunshine and roses. If these two want to get together, it’s a true battle of good versus evil. But this one even has more behind it, and that makes it a true treat for the rest of the series.
And action? There’s lots of that. The monsters never relax as everything from zombies to vampires to demons to hydras and beyond lurk in the shadows. Seeley has her hands full at every twist and turn. Add the wonderful, religious background to this entire thing, and it’s simply a good read.
I received a complimentary copy and enjoyed every single page.
4 CRANKY STARS
This is a story about a very pious young lady, Seely, with special powers. She has the good fortune to be able to see and speak with her Guardian Angel, Ezekiel. Her local Priest is also a mentor and her counselor. Since a young age, she has seen and heard Ezekiel, along with demons and other monsters. As a result, the priest has been her counselor because he believes in her. Regular psychiatrists only wanted to give her medication. She is now a high school senior with no friends and is known as the crazy girl. One day she meets a good-looking young man in the parking lot of the church. Unbeknownst to her, he is the adopted son of Lucifer’s representative in the United States. However, Seely only sees goodness in Jack’s heart and immediately falls in love with him.
I am only giving this story 4 stars because it was good, but I did not feel like I cared if the story continued. Also, the author must have been told at some point to use obscure words for descriptions occasionally, because she seems to have gone all out. It is very disruptive to have to keep stopping to check the dictionary. The book did have angels, demons, vampires, and other monsters and was a classic good versus evil adventure.
This is a well written book with strong characters and a unique story line. The author does a great job developing the story and pulls you in with the action and danger and does a fantastic job detailing her scenes. She brings twists and turns and keeps you glued to the pages right to the end. Great book for the YA genre.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
A young girl, Seeley, who learns that her invisible boyfriend is a guardian angel who teaches her how to fight evil in the world. Her childhood is therefore not easy but she has faith in God and herself. When she is 18 she meets Jack. He was adopted at a young age by a rich man, Asa, who devotes himself to black magic in the black order. He trains Jack to take over his leadership someday.
Seeley and Jack find out that they both have magical powers. Asa wants the powers of Seeley for his own gain, but can Jack let this happen?
A great YA story. The tension meets you in every chapter. The blossoming love between Seeley and Jack is beautifully described. Choices are made for life regardless of the price. Tears secretly in my eyes at the end of the story. I’m curious about the rest of this series.
I have received an ARC from the author and leave my honest opinion behind
Wickedly It Brings is Book 1 in The Wickedly series. I enjoyed reading this book as it is well written with excellently developed characters. It has a unique storyline because of it is different from most in this genre. I loved Seely (God’s Warrior) and Ezekiel (her angel). Jack (raised to love evil) was not so likeable at first but his character began to slightly change over time after he met Seely. I am looking forward to the next book in this series to see what Ms. Constantine has in store for Seely and Jack. This is an awesome book which I recommend. I received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
OMG I could not put this book down, you just wanted to know what would happen next. I feel young teens and adults would really love this series. Seely is born a hunter with a guardian angel (Ezekiel). Jack was an orphan until Ase Trebane (pure evil) found him. Seely goes after evil. Jack is trained to love evil. One day Jack has pull toward Seely. What will happen when they meet? Can they accept what the other is? Will one drag the other down? Will one live to see tomorrow? Why do they care for each other? What is this prophesy? I received a free copy for my honest review.
