This is the book that started it all! The basis for the smash hit Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Gregory Maguire’s breathtaking New York Times bestseller Wicked views the land of Oz, its inhabitants, its Wizard, and the Emerald City, through a darker and greener (not rosier) lens. Brilliantly inventive, Wicked offers us a radical new evaluation of one of the most feared and hated characters … feared and hated characters in all of literature: the much maligned Wicked Witch of the West who, as Maguire tells us, wasn’t nearly as Wicked as we imagined.

I found the book to drag on and did not find it not entertaining.
its good to see the villians point of view. it shows that not everyone is what they seem to be.
While I did enjoy the story and the plot twists, I really did not like the writing style. Some parts of the book really did draaaaag on forever. 99% of the time I like the book better than the movie. For this one, I enjoyed the play more than the book. It took me forever to finish it.
Tells the other side of the story…
So borrring. I had high hopes for this because reading backstories of villains is usually really interesting. I also figured if a hit musical is based off of this, it can’t be too bad. No. This moved along at such a slow pace with nothing significant happening other than the birth of the witch for a good chunk of the beginning (8 chapters). When …
I am very late to this book but I am glad I read it now. Such an interesting twist to read the Wicked Witch of the West point of view. This story addresses abandonment, racism, and bullying in such a unique way. Very enjoyable and enlightening.
I tried to read the book and it was just above my reading level or it was just hard to read… either way I ended up getting it on audio book since it is the book we choose for our book club. Even on audio it was hard for me to get into the book. I am giving it 3 stars since I am not sure if it was me or the book.
I did enjoy the point of the …
Wicked is an outstanding book, musical, and story. It gets stuck in your head, and I had to read it again. (Is it possible for it to be more satisfying the second time? Yes.) G. M. takes our childhood fantasy of the Wizard of Oz, and shakes it up for an imaginative adult version of what it would be like to grow up as Elphaba, (or Glinda, or with …
Not what I expected. Totally different take on the original story. A good read, but much darker and adult than I had anticipated.
I love this book it’s everything I always said about the wicked witch when I was a kid. She’s not evil just miss understood and bullied.
makes you feel sorry for the Wicked Witch of the West. Poor, misunderstood Ephaba…
This is another of my favorite series!! I love everything he writes!! But to be able to see & look at Oz through the Wicked Witches eyes is a whole other world!! We get to see her young & the journey that takes her to being the Wicked Witch. Reading it once isn’t enough! You’ll want to read it again & again!!
If you have seen the play, don’t expect the same experience. This book is really dark and strange.
Maybe if I had read the book before I saw the Broadway musical, I may have liked it better. I thought the book was too dark & slow moving.
Don’t bother reading this book. It started off fairly well if you look past some of the unnecessary raunchiness. The middle takes a weird turn and then just plummets.
What were high hopes for an adult retelling of a beloved childhood story we’re soon dashed. It’s as if the writer tried to turn Wizard of Oz into the worst story possible.
I was …
Have seen the play and have been wanting to read the books
Easily one of the BEST books I have ever read. This is not a book that I normally would have read – but once I started it – I was hooked. I was coming home during my lunch hour to read. I couldn’t get enough of it. Be sure to watch The Wizard of Oz after reading this one. You will see the movie in a whole new light. It becomes a completely …
Nice to read from a different view. Never liked the munchkins.
For the most part, I really enjoyed the re-telling of this story from a different perspective. I love how the author delved into more world building with Oz.
What I did not enjoy was at times, the author would go into beautiful prose, but it didn’t add much forward momentum to the story. It was like the author went off on a tangent, but their …
A whole new insight into a character that you never knew about. I can’t watch the movie without feeling sympathy for the Wicked Witch. She is now one of my favourite characters. I have reread the book several times, enjoying it every time.
