Nominated for the prestigious romance Rita award!“Rice is a master storyteller. A wonderful blend of humor, pathos, adventure, and charm, this page-turner is book one in Rice’s promising Rebellious Sons series.” —Shelley Mosley, BooklistJohn Fitzhugh Wyckerly has been the spare heir all his life, supporting himself with gambling and charm. The news that he’s inherited the bankrupt title of Earl … gambling and charm. The news that he’s inherited the bankrupt title of Earl of Danecroft shatters his indolent world. Even penniless, he’s always paid his debts, but now the estate’s creditors are closing in. He can fake his death and run for cover, or accept overwhelming responsibility and find a rich wife, one who will also accept his illegitimate terror of a daughter.
On his way to find an heiress, he meets Abigail Merriweather, who is neither rich nor aristocratic, but she can tame The Terror and stomp cockroaches. Unfortunately, she needs a wealthy, powerful man who will fight her father’s executor and retrieve her four half-siblings. When an unexpected inheritance falls into Abby’s lap, she sets out for London to seek a lawyer.
Can Fitz charm his practical Abby into trusting him to save her siblings when it’s doubtful that he can even save himself? And can Abby surrender reason and logic for the folly of love offered by a man who can have any woman he wants but insists he wants only her?

A story fraught tears and triumphs. It will keep you on edge as this couple fights through their money problems. With the help of friends, they find their way. Wonderful characters and witty word play.
Rice creates puts a twist on a Regency by making the rake hero claim his young illegitimate daughter and try to be a good father. Abigail comes to his rescue but at a price. She has four younger siblings, but they won’t give a single woman custody. In helping each other, they fall in love, but how can they over come their poverty and take care of the children they love? The characters are funny, honest, and intelligent. The ending won’t disappoint.
The stray cat and the country mouse
Family feuds, fraud, and fatherhood conspire to leave Wyckerly – math master, successful pro gambler, and newly made Earl of Danecroft – bankrupt, hounded by creditors, homeless, and broke. His meeting with Abigail Meriweather, is fortuitous. She’s a country girl who knows everything he doesn’t – how to get things done, keep accounts, manage a rural estate, and love children. Her much younger siblings and his wild child daughter prove that. Is it a match made in Eden or the gamble of a lifetime for these two to make a marriage of convenience into the love match of a lifetime? It’s a fascinatingly improbable tale told by a witty and articulate writer – thoroughly entertaining.
Humerous and enjoyable. H was very likeable.
I loved it a fun romance but seemed more than
I really liked this book. Fritz was honorable and Abby was wise. She gave him a hard time and risked the chance of losing her personal happiness for the sake of her half-siblings. I hope to continue reading the whole series because of the interesting characters who were introduced.
A never give up story.
This novel was FUN… Fun to read, fun to love, fun to get lost in. Twists and turns and worthy of rereading (which I plan to do fairly soon). Characters have depth… Loved the hero/heroine so much!
Always ends with love and marriage
I enjoyed the book and the characters in it.
Great read
Too Long
This book was well-written and interesting at times. However, there was no romantic tension between Fitz and Abby. I found the exchanges between Quentin and Isabella more interesting. Also, the story was just too long and I started to lose interest well before the end.
I liked the characters and the way they were developed. Fun read.
Enjoyed it enough to buy the entire series. Laugh out loud funny.
Wonderful book! I have read so many of these type of books (they are my favorite!) but this was just a little different. So many of the stories have characters that have money/power/servants available at anytime. It was refreshing to read about a hero that needed to work at it. With all that going on, the reader was still able to enjoy the clothes, castles and romance of the era. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
This story has everything. It is nice to read a story about the inner workings of the peers of the realm of the period. An original theme with added incidents to hold the attention and make the reader laugh out loud. Family and commitments add just the right toppings. Add some intimate scenes and it on. A wonderful entertaining long story.
delightful read.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Hero was an intelligent gambler but also a man of principle.. highly recommend……… you won’t put it down!
This book was enjoyable in that it gave a personality to each character and remained true to it throughout the story. The characters eventually learned what chaos their personal perceived inadequacies wrought and dealt with them by changing their behaviors. Plus, it was a good clean read!
The book has all the typical characters and story line for a historical romance. So there aren’t a lot of surprises but still it is well written and an enjoyable read.
