A wonderful blend of humor, pathos, adventure, and charm, this page-turner is book one in Rice’s promising Rebellious Sons series.” —Shelley Mosley, BooklistJohn Fitzhugh Wyckerly has been the spare heir all his life, supporting himself with gambling and charm. The news that he’s inherited the bankrupt title of Earl … gambling and charm. The news that he’s inherited the bankrupt title of Earl of Danecroft shatters his indolent world. Even penniless, he’s always paid his debts, but now the estate’s creditors are closing in. He can fake his death and run for cover, or accept overwhelming responsibility and find a rich wife, one who will also accept his illegitimate terror of a daughter.
On his way to find an heiress, he meets Abigail Merriweather, who is neither rich nor aristocratic, but she can tame The Terror and stomp cockroaches. Unfortunately, she needs a wealthy, powerful man who will fight her father’s executor and retrieve her four half-siblings. When an unexpected inheritance falls into Abby’s lap, she sets out for London to seek a lawyer.
Can Fitz charm his practical Abby into trusting him to save her siblings when it’s doubtful that he can even save himself? And can Abby surrender reason and logic for the folly of love offered by a man who can have any woman he wants but insists he wants only her?

Standard Regency. Just ok.
Good book.
This is a fun romp through the regency period. A good easy beach read.
Lots of fun…I immediately went looking for the other 3 books in this series.
really enjoyed the story
This is a different take on the wealthy man, noble woman scheme. This earl is bankrupt, literally, with an illegitimate daughter he just discovered, when he runs into a woman with no status trying to bring her half-siblings home from the court-appointed home to which they have been sent. Complicated, but interesting twists on the usual story.
Loved it
This book is a cleverly written work with entwining story lines and realistic characters. It has well placed humor as well as tense situations. I really enjoyed reading this romantic story!
It was a great romantic adventure.
A good story, interesting characters, and worthy of eventually rereading.
I enjoyed the characters. There was also an element of suspense.
Fun to read, hard to put it down and really enjoyed the writing style
It made me want to read more about the Wyckerlys.
I’m still reading this book, but it’s just okay. I’m having trouble staying with it, but that is not to say that P.R. is not a good writer.
Just finished reading this. Excellent read, page turner to see next happening.
This book was so much fun and gave me exactly what I look for in my reading.
