The duke’s only daughter is a beautiful spinster.… spinster.

Upon hearing his requirement for forgiving her father’s debt, she is outraged. She has no intention of marrying the villain and sponsoring his wild sisters in their seasons.

Wow, what a great beginning to a new series & the first book gets you emotionally involved in crux of the matter in the first few pages.
Mr. Deveraux “Dev” Winter is a merchant & the head of the most notorious family in London, The Wicked Winters. He is castigated by polite society for his dissolute behavior but he also is rich as Croesus & owns 1/2 of London. Dev loves his five sisters & they are all of marrying age, so he must repair his reputation in order to earn acceptance in to the Ton. He needs to marry a highly respected lady from a titled family that can assist his sisters, in their first season, to find titled husbands.
Lady Emilia King, is the spinster daughter of the Duke of Abingdon, has declared to stay away from love & remain unwed after losing her love & finance in a riding accident. Alas, things would be changing rapidly for her – her father had been ill with memory & lack of judgement behavior & her mother has informed her that her father has lost all of their assets & Mr. Winter, who lives in the next door townhouse, has bought up all of her father’s vowels. Mr. Winter’s price for this is to call the vowels paid & she would in turn marry him & take his sisters under her wing to prepare them for the season & finding husbands from good families.
Emilia & Dev have a definite “hate/love” relationship & their journey is a tumultuous one. I loved Dev from the beginning – he was handsome, rich, manly, in control but also, soft, kind, loved his sisters & wanted to be accepted by society. I found Emilia arrogant, unfeeling & I hated the way she looked down on Dev’s lower class but as the book moved on I really ended up loving her.
I highly recommend this book – Scarlett Scott writes the most entrancing stories to go with her delicious heroes & lovely heroines!
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
Wow! Amazing new series from Scarlett Scott! Totally can’t wait to read the other books coming out for this series! I was unable to put the book down and was able to finish with a hour or two! I love the characters and can’t wait to see what happens to his 5 sisters!
This is a wonderful start to what looks to be a beautiful new series. I LOVED Wicked in Winter! I felt so sorry for Dev at the beginning of this book, he wanted so much for his family and was treated so rudely. I’m glad all of his goodness was reflected in the book and finally seen by Emilia.
Once again, Scarlett my has produced a beautiful story you will fall in love with and new characters we can’t wait to read about. I look forward to the next book.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romance and steamy love scenes. I received an advance copy of this book and I am voluntarily submitting this review.
P.S. LOVE the dedication! . That is too funny!
Devlin Winter is now one of my favorite heroes. A man who knows what he wants and willing to admit that sometimes change is needed. He is unmerciless in his actions but in the best possible way. I hate spoilers but will say, this newest opener for a series was awesome! I cannot wait to see what is in store for the rest of the Winters!
Scrumptious! Charming! Sigh Worthy! A brutal opening though with our hero wanting only one thing. To have Lady Emilia become his wife. She wanted nothing to do with him, but he had her family’s life in his hands.
“Why would you wish to marry me, Mr. Winter?” The look she gave him could have turned his soul to ice is he had possessed one. He was reasonably certain he did not.
“I have something you want, and you have something I want, my lady. The exchange is clear and advantageous for all parties.”
Dev Winter’s goal was to marry Amelia so she could take his five sisters, oh yes five, under her wing and help them acquire noblemen as husbands.”He loved the five of them more than he would have ever imagined possible and he would do anything for them.” So the first glimmer that Dev really did have a heart and soul, he just hid it well with his brutal business dealings. I think he needed true love most of all.
Emilia was a Duke’s daughter and felt he would be beneath her, as he was a “lowborn brute.” I could only hope she would find what she needed with this man and give him a chance.
But when he introduced her to his sisters, she saw he “doted” upon his them and his true smile was so charming..
Scarlett Scott has created a family of the Winters that is brilliant! I could not wait to see what happened or if Emilia would thaw and Dev would charm her….
Wait, did I say a page turner? A sigh worthy hero? To keep a cold compress handy? Sorry I digress. Don’t miss this wonderful beginning to a new series that is guaranteed to have you anxious for the next story to come out! I know I am!!
Wicked in Winter by Scarlett Scott is book One in The Wicked Winters Series. This is the story of Emilia King and Devereaux ‘Dev’ Winter.
Dev is a part of the Wicked Winters family that have a somewhat dark cloud on them. In addition, he is a very rich businessman and has 5 sisters he needs to see settled and married. But without a title nor the reputation he won’t be getting his sister settled. But he does have one thing going for him…his next door neighbor is a Duke with a spinster daughter named Emilia. Dev has set a plan in motions since the daughter doesn’t want to enter into marriage to force her hand. Emilia has not plans to marry and tries to resist Dev but the sparks keep flying along with their words. But Dev wants more than he originally thought and won’t settle for no.
Loved their story and Ms. Scott’s writing!
Lady Emilia King, the daughter of a duke, is content to remain unmarried. Due to unforeseen & unfortunate circumstances, she realizes she may have to marry Mr Devereaux Winter to save her family. To say she’s devastated is an understatement.
Mr Devereaux Winter is a wealthy man, but not a member of the TON. He’s seeking respectability, as well as assistance in seeing his sisters settled. Who better than a Duke’s daughter to fill that role?
These two…I wanted to scold them, shake them, laugh with them, and cheer them on…all in one novella. I loved the sparring & I loved the sizzling chemistry (HOT!) between them! I just wish the story was longer because I loved Dev & Emilia and didn’t want it to end! Haha! But…I bet we’ll continue to keep up with them in the books to follow.
Wicked in Winter had me captivated from beginning to end! Though a novella, I didn’t feel that “rushed, surface-level connection” with the characters, as I often do when reading novellas. I feel Scarlett Scott did a fantastic job with the character & plot depth/development in this story. It’s an excellent start to this new series! I can not wait to read about the sisters and their adventures!!
I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Big, brawny, sometimes unrefined hero – where can I get one of these? Dev is a hero who loves his family (a definite plus in my book). I love when the hero is not afraid to show his love for his family and will do for them. There are too many stories where the hero (or heroine) have rifts with their family. Not that it is always a bad thing, it is just a refreshing read to have that love shown. Emilia has loved and lost and is wandering through life without a real purpose until she meets the Winters. They bring her out of her sadness. The respect Dev shows Emilia during their courtship and after they are married is beautiful. I loved both of these characters.
I received a complimentary copy from the author.
Devereaux Winter is one of the wealthiest men in England, but he hails from a notorious family. The Wicked Winters are as reviled as they are renowned. Another captivating read from the author & the start of what promises to be another engrossing series. Dev is lovely hard on the outside with a soft & gentle interior. Emilia is the ever so proper Duke’s daughter together fireworks fly. Their verbal sparring is wonderful & highly entertaining. We meet all five Winter sisters & I can’t wait for their stories. I read this in a sitting & loved every page
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Deveraux Winter may be the wealthiest man in England but he longs for the one thing all his money can’t buy: respectability. Now he needs a highborn wife to help him see his five younger sisters into good marriages. Luckily for him, his next door neighbor is a duke with pockets to let and an unmarried spinster daughter.
Since the death of her beloved fiance, Lady Emilia King has believed her heart incapable of further love and especially incapable of marriage. When she learns that the brutish merchant Mr. Winter now owns all her father’s assets, she is left in a state of shocked denial. She has no intention of giving in and yet if she doesn’t marry Dev, she and her parents will be utterly impoverished. Dev always gets what he wants and eventually he and Lady Emilia may come to want the same things.
I really didn’t like Emilia. She was over the top with her snobbishness and hatefulness to Dev and his sisters simply because of their lower birth. When her snobby facade finally subsided and she allowed herself to feel again and try to know Dev, I did like her a bit more, although she still was awfully quick to judge Dev without trying to communicate with him. Dev wasn’t perfect either, but he was a gruff bad boy hero with a good heart and I do love those. I found him charming and he exhibited lovely growth, especially for a novella. I loved how steamy this read was and how much chemistry these characters had. This is a promising start to a new series and I’m looking forward to the rest.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Wow! Dev and Amelia, oh my these two had a love/hate attraction and sizzling chemistry from the beginning. They are neighbors but from two very different worlds. She was born into it and he has had to work hard to get to where he is today.
He attains her father’s vowels and forces her to marry him. Everything he does is ruthless except when it comes to his five sisters that he needs to establish in society. Amelia eventually gives in to the marriage because there is no other choice, her father’s ailing mind has put them in this situation and now she has to fix it. She soon finds out that Dev is not at all what she thinks and we get to go on a spicy journey from hate to sizzling attraction to love.
This a wonderful book and a reasonably quick read if you are strapped for time. I cannot wait to read about the Wicked Winter sisters and their escapades! I was given an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.
I love ALL of the Wicked Winters. Starting with Dev. He used all power and “persuasion” techniques to have Lady Emilia marry him and help his five sisters step into the aristocratic circle and marry a man with a title.
The back and forth between Mr Winter and the lady is both entertaining and stimulating. Both before and after the wedding.
Favorite scene: When they are riding to the theatre together for the 3rd time in a fortnight. Oh my gooooooodness.
This book sets the tone for an amazing series.
What I will say for every single book: I love the lust, steam and the lack of angst. It makes me tingle and happy.
I had been reading Christmas collections and needed a break! I was wanting a good story and steamy read. I had heard good things about this author on Facebook and decided to give her a try. My favorite trope is ruthless self made businessman marries for respectability. This story happened to fit that perfectly! It was a pleasant surprise! Dev basically makes Amelia marry him so she can help his five sisters to marry well and she absolutely hates him for it. It is a long road to their HEA, but well worth the journey. The book was super steamy! The plot was fast paced and entertaining. The love story passionate and steamy. The dynamic between the characters was excellent. I am so glad I found this author and series! I will definitely read more! They are short, my only complaint, wish they were longer! But overall an amazing read!
Great Series Start!
There was instant chemistry between Dev and Emilia, but each was too stubborn to acknowledge it before it was almost too late. It was interesting to see the battle of wills gradually disintegrate as they came to the realization they were in love. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
An amazing start to the series
This book is an amazing first in a series that shows great promise. The plot is full of emotional obstacles, and keeps you gripped right to the end. The characters are portrayed wonderfully. This is a great book for anybody who loves hot steamy historical romances that have plenty of intrigue.
Doesn’t seem as if author took as much time and care with the Wicked series as with some of her other books. Entertaining nevertheless.
A quick and absorbing read, and a nice setup for the rest of the series. The hero, Dev Winter, was the star of this story for me. I love non-aristocratic, self made heroes and Dev had the added bonus of being big and handsome on top of that. *swoon*. His determination to cement a place for his 5 sisters in high society through good marriages leads him to coerce the daughter of a duke into marriage, by using her father’s debt as a bargaining chip. I love a ruthless hero with hard edges, so the premise of this story was right up my alley. The heroine, Lady Emilia King, was difficult to like at times but her personality and attitude toward Dev and his sisters was in keeping with the status she carried as a Duke’a daughter, so it fit. As Dev’s family begins to melt her icy exterior and sexual tension heats up between him and Emilia, the story hits its stride. The ending was satisfying and the sneak peek into the story of Bea, the youngest Winter sister, is nicely hinted at.
On to book 2!
My first Scarlett Scott book and I am happy I picked it up. This cute enemies-to-lovers book was a great beginning to a series about a brother and his 5 sisters finding love.
Dev was trying to fix his reputation and he decided to do that by marrying a duke’s daughter. As he pursues her, he finds that she captivates him more than he thought she would. Emilia has vowed never to love another after her fiance died. But there was something about Dev that she couldn’t push away.
This novella had just the right amount of drama and misunderstanding to keep the reader interested. I will definitely read about the sisters.
A nice take on titled girl being forced to marry a commoner because their father ruined them in a marriage of convenience. Dev Winter first appears to be a brute and Emilia King the snob of her class. But first impressions are not always correct. He is a man who adores his five sisters and she is not the snooty society girl as one first thinks. Together they learn to really see each other and learn to love. This is the first of a series, with each future book being about one of the sisters. Well worth the read – am already reading the next.
