In the second pulse-pounding novel in the USA Today bestselling Heirs of Chicagoland series, vampire Elisa Sullivan gets drawn into the shifting sands of Pack politics. Vampires were made, not born—until Elisa Sullivan came along. As the only vampire child in existence, she grew up with a heavy legacy, and tried to flee her past. Then circumstances drew her back to Chicago, and she stayed to … to Chicago, and she stayed to keep it safe. With shifter Connor Keene, the only son of Pack Apex Gabriel Keene, at her side, she faced down a supernatural evil that threatened to destroy Chicago forever.
After the dust from the attack has settled, Elisa is surprised when Connor invites her to a usually private Pack event in the north woods of Minnesota, and by the warm welcome she receives from some of Connor’s family, even though she’s a vampire. But the peace doesn’t last. The shifters tell tales of a monster in the woods, and when the celebration is marred by death, Elisa and Connor find themselves in the middle of a struggle for control that forces Elisa to face her true self—fangs and all.

Wicked Hour by Chloe Neill is the second in her spin-off series to Chicagoland Vampires, Heirs.
I feel a little behind the 8-ball here, not having read the first Heirs book, Wild Hunger. But I’ll be fixing that soon.
This book starts with a slow build-up to the action, but Neill is a master at bringing the characters out, developing the world they inhabit, fleshing them fully until you are feeling with them.
Elise and Connor are trying to move forward in a potential relationship, and Connor even brings her to the far north to what is generally a Pack only meeting. Things start out well, but prejudices do not stay hidden for long. Danger starts from the outside, but seems to trigger some internal issues. Soon Elise and Connor are dealing not only a threat to their people’s, but threats to themselves as well.
Wonderful read and you can bet I’ll be caught up in time for the next. 4.5 stars rounded to 5.
I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley and chose to leave a voluntary review. Thank you!*
I was really looking forward to this book, as I liked the first book a lot.
This book started out pretty good and strong but at the 30-40% mark it just went downhill and had a hard time ti recover from that.
One I thought as we leaping Chicago we get a little more action on the road and we do get some, but we also get some long and a bit boring politics. Some parts are just a bit too drawn out. We do leanr a bit more about the pack and not only the ones we know but also some elders and rules from other packs, which was sort of interesting and I liked that part.
We also meet some new people and I must say Alexei, is one of my new favs ….. So far. Of course we see some familiar faces and its aslways good to see Ethan and Mer again, and see little has changed with them lol .
I really like Connor and Elisa, I like them even more. Of course we get some pretty funny banter between them which I loved … for the most part. Except there were a few times I was annoyed how they had to call or point out that one is a vampire and one is a wolf…… that happened way to many times for my liking and got old. Though I have to say that I like Connor more than I ever liked Ethan. I did not start liking Ethan till the end of the series lol .
I don’t want to spoil anything so I just be very vague but some things happened in the book , that got handled not every well for me, that just sort of ruined a lot of it .
Overall. It started out good, then things got wonky and never really recovered. I most likely will still pick up the next book in the series to see how things turn out. But this book was just okay for me and could have been a bit better.
I rate it 3
Audiobook review: Plenty of action! Interesting storyline with characters that are unique and likable. Plenty of romantic moments too. The narrator did a great job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.
Book two finds us with Connor and Elisa more grown, more entwined than ever before. They are off to a function that Connor must attend.
And what lies ahead is nothing but trouble and Elisa is in it bloody deep. Can she keep her monster at bay or will she finally let it out to play?
Fantastic story!
I am already in love with this series, Elisa and Connor’s relationship really starts to come together. I am sure it won’t be easy with him being in line to be Apex and Elisa being vampire but I think they will work it out.
This was an interesting story Connor invited Elisa to a private Pack event and things kind of when awry but I figured that would happen it’s the way it all went down and how entertaining it was. I just couldn’t put the book down.
Elisa is still battling the “monster” within but I think she realizes yes it feeds on pain but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. If she and it work together they both can get what they need. I mean its magic was bound to her in the womb there is going to be side effect. I hope though she opens up to her parents about it. It seems like a big shadow still hanging over her that she hasn’t opened up to them about it.
Connor really became a leader to me in this book and I like how he wanted Elisa to be herself all of herself including the “monster” he sees them as one. That acceptance is exactly what she needs too I think.
I hate that I have to wait for book 3!! I can’t freaking wait.
Again the narration was fantastic and Suzanne really does give this book a voice.
I loved it just as much as the 1st in the new series. These characters are terrific, and the word building continues to be fresh.
I really enjoyed this book. This is the second book in the Heirs of Chicagoland series which is a series that is best read in order if at all possible. I had fun with this book from the very start and found it became more entertaining as I worked my way through the story. I found this to be a very solid entry into a promising series.
This book takes Connor and Elisa on a trip. Connor needs to attend an initiation in Minnesota and asks Elisa to come along. This is not the kind of event that vampires are usually allowed to attend so Elisa takes the opportunity. There is also the little issue of Connor and Elisa’s budding relationship to deal with. Things get exciting just as soon as Connor and Elisa make it to the Pack’s home. There are some strange things going on including a few deaths. Connor and Elisa have a lot to figure out before they can head for home.
I thought that this story was quite exciting. There was a nice combination of mystery, action, politics, and romance to really keep things moving. The overall mystery was pretty complex and I couldn’t figure out who the responsible party was until it was revealed. I also really enjoyed the progress that was made in Connor and Elisa’s relationship. I think that these two have a lot of chemistry and really do fit together well.
I thought that the characters in this book were very well done. Elisa and Connor are both really strong characters and I like the fact that they seem to have each other’s back at every turn. There were some really great characters that were introduced in this installment and a few from the previous book that we got to know a little better.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a really strong installment in the Heirs of Chicagoland series. This book was filled with wonderful characters, plenty of excitement, and a few swoony moments. I can’t wait to read more from Chloe Neill!
I received a digital review copy of this book from Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley.
I discovered this author a few years ago in the library with ever since that time when I see she has another offering I leap into it with excitement. Since I adored the other series this made me do a happy dance this series did. As it continues in a way with the ones born in this one even more of a intriguing read. Elisa is different but has our attention. Along with Connor once again they gives a addition that has us close to them so not to miss a beat. When the dark enters into the celebration it would seem things begin to have you slowly edging to the ledge. With supporting characters to add even more flavor to this intense tale you are more than swept away, your are there for awhile. With this embodying many elements it gives you some satisfaction but also leaves the door open because more will have to come.
I was a big fan of the first series starring Elisa’s parents. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this series even after really liking the first one. With this second one, I know I’m going to love it! Elisa is such a strong, confident main character. She doesn’t need protection, but she doesn’t get upset if people try to protect her because she understands the need to protect. Not only that, I loved the mystery, the handling of the mystery, and even how it ended. I also love how Elisa is still figuring out who she is and how Connor is going to fit in all that. And, I love the sexiness without the sex (and the romance is good, too!). This is a great book, and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves the Chicagoland series or urban fantasy in general. I was provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
