Desire tempted them. Honor forbade them. Love ensnared them. Legendary warrior Lachlan MacLeod has never encountered anything or anyone he could not conquer. But when his younger brother confesses his love for Bridgette MacLean—the only woman Lachlan has ever wanted—Lachlan turns away from the beautiful Scottish lass, vowing to be no more than her friend. Yet his need for Bridgette enslaves him … Bridgette enslaves him and may well prove to be the one thing he cannot defeat.
Fiercely independent Bridgette longs to be treated as an equal to the men. She always imagined great battles in her future, not great love. Then Lachlan saw her as no one ever had and captured her heart, awakening new cravings inside her without realizing it. But when Lachlan’s younger brother suffers a grave injury while saving her life, she feels unable to deny his plea for her heart. However, it is impossible to give what belongs to another…
Torn between their own desire and their loyalties, Bridgette and Lachlan must find the courage to grasp the passion awaiting them and face the pain their choice will cause. Yet even as they confront their future and love finally seems within their grasp, a fight for the Scottish throne divides the Highland clans and Bridgette becomes a pawn in a political game that threatens to tear her and Lachlan apart forever.

I love this series and highly recommend it to anyone.
A deliciously captivating Highland romance! I loved it from the first page until the last.
Loved the hero for loving his bride through all their trials… I think it is the best love story of all.
Strong characters. Love wins out in the end.
Great Story
If you have not read the previous book in this Scottish Medieval series, (When A Laird Loves A Lady, Marion and Iain’s story) you will find this an easy to follow stand alone but you don’t want to miss the adventure and history of each book in this 5 star series. This is Bridgette and Lachlan’s story.
If you enjoy historical fiction and adventure romance, you’ll love this series. The action keeps the plot moving forward quickly and you’ll soon be hearing a wonderful brogue as you follow the dialect.
The custom of the times is to marry off the women to form alliances and allegiances.
Bridgette MacLeon is not a typical woman of her time. She has no desire to be married off. She would rather train to be a warrior alongside the men. However when she is rescued from dangerous marauders by the fierse Lachlan MacLeod, her heart begins to mature and she learns more feminine emotions. She is not allowed to fall into his arms and give up her goals.
This is something of a medieval coming of age story set within the themes of family loyalty and code of values. Those standards are challenged and tested over and over as is Bridgette’s physical stamina. Let me add, marriage has not softened Marion either. These are very strong, intelligent women. The book also has HOT steamy scenes for you dedicated romance lovers.
Set in the times it is, politics plays a major role in the day to life and hierarchy of the classes.
A woman from a different clan is assigned to marry Lachlan to suit King David’s purposes.
Although not allowed to be together (due to fierce and complicated family loyalty issues) Bridgette is unwilling to allow any other woman to have the man her heart knows belongs to her.
Helena Campbell uses womanly weapons rather than daggers and bow and arrow. She is as much a victim as she is a villainess. Written seductively well, I still felt a tinge of sadness for her.
The book overflows with competition and scheming. Steamy heat passes between major players unwilling to show their hand and true emotion. All under the guise of loyalty and duty.
There was delectable tension when Brigette was allowed to hunt the bull.
Included are mystical elements which are appropriate to the times.
I also appreciated the humor expressed. A prime example was teasing Rory Mac about his role as a parent. His manly response is that he wants to hold the bairn during daytime hours.
Overall a verra excellent read.
Bridgette and Lachlan’s story was superb. All of the elements of a great story entangled to create a wonderful happily ever after. A can’t miss story.

This story centers on a beautiful young girl Bridgette MacLean who is struggling as she is coming into womanhood. She resents being born a female, not able to do all the the things her male sibling and other males are allowed to do. Bridgette has a warrior’s heart and want to hunt and even go to battle and fight. As she resents all the restrictions put on women not being allowed to do these things and live the life she chooses. Then the first time she puts herself in a dangerous situation she is nearly ruined. The braw handsome Highlander Lachlan MacLeod rescues her and from that day on Bridgette realizes she’s in love with Lachlan. The problem is on that day Lachlan’s brother Graham has declared he is in love with Bridgette MacLean
Lachlan loves Bridgette too, but feels guilty and hides it. He had had given a deathbed promise to his mum to protect and watch over his younger brother. So he does all he can to hide his true feelings. Then Graham is crippled protecting Brigette so out of guilt she agrees to marry the wrong brother. On top of that Lachlan feels he’s failed his brother, focusing on the lass he loves, instead of the bother he promised to protect. So he leaves for for four years hoping to forget and and bury his guilt and feelings. On top of this a seers dire protections all seem to be coming true!
Graham is great at manipulation and putting the guilt on and extremely jealous of his successful and honorable brother. Does he truly love Brigette or does he want something just so he brother can’t have it? Yes Lachlan is honor bound to his mother’s deathbed wish to watch over and protect Graham which Graham seems to despise and hate. Then after returning from Kings business Lachlan returns with a beautiful possible fiancé on his arm! Bridgette is heartbroken. In addition their enemies sister whose lethal brother Colin Campbell also wants Bridgette. A marriage proposal she refused as her mother has promised she could always pick her own husband,. On top of this there is a seer whose dire predictions all seem to be coming true! A Fairie flag in question, plus a surprise twist that was a total shocker that is very dark but definitely needed to be told!
So Bridgette and Lachlan do everything try can do to suppress and hide their guilt and true feelings, but sometimes love just can’t be denied.
A fast paced powerful and very emotional read that definitely pulls on the heartstrings. Also weaves some true history with a fictional romance . So have the the tissues ready while reading this powerful heart pulling story about betrayal, guilt, sibling rivalry, jealousy, enemy clans, trauma, battles of the sexes and all consuming love. A heartstopping captivating story Scottish romance lovers will absolutely devour!
Well done Ms. Johnstone! I can’t wait for the next book in this riveting and addictive series. You can also read this as a stand alone book. If you want to read about Bridgette’s best friend Marion and Lachlan’s older brother Iain story: I recommend book one “When a Laird Loves a Lady”.

The Story was ok, I was disappointed in Marion “The Heroine in (When A Laird Loves a Lady).” In a scene with Marion & Bridgette, Marion did nothing to help in the situation. It was so frustrating.
Bridgette’s dealing with Colin abusing her physically & Mentally because she rejected his proposal.
After a few weeks at her Family’s castle they rarely used she basically overcame her emotions regarding the abuse she endured.
Anyone who has been assaulted isn’t easily swayed by anyone regardless if they love them. I have really bad Anxiety from the Physically, Mentally & Sexual Abuse I endured. I had a really bad Anxiety Attack while I was driving. The Story ended kinda on a cliffhanger, which i was not happy about!
This is a book about a woman that was raised to do everything a man can do and how she gets on in life.
Good story – toooooo much sex.
I enjoy this book. It let’s us know that love n trust is a strong bond .
Slow moving. Hard to discern time period set in..
left to wonder at the end.
Strong characters with a plot that keeps you reading. Enjoy!
Kept me turning pages. Good read.
This book is wonderful, could not put it down. I didn’t want it to end.
