She’s without friends, lost and alone after taking the beating of her life from a witch so poisonous that her nails left infection behind. The only one with her is, or was, or sometimes still is (confusing? Yeah, for her too!), Karl who stole her from the castle carrying her far away from all she knew on powerful wings, without thought or care for whether her injuries were deadly, or the cold penetrating below the skin. HIs icyness towards her has her so confused for he is not the Karl she had been friends with for so long.
Lyana is in dire straits right now. This was where we were left at the end of Blessed King, and this is where we begin here in Wiccan Queen. And once again, Karen Tomlinson leads us through a harrowing tale of a displaced Wiccan Queen who wasn’t even aware this whispered title actually belonged to her. Now it’s time for her to learn what it means to be Wiccan Queen. And to find her way back to Jack, the man she has loved for so long.
There is so much to this book. So much danger, so much heartbreak, so much loneliness, so much fear. A tale is woven of witch armies being led by the witch who wants to rule this world and who has amassed an army to defeat any who disagree. Of a king who knows the evil this witch brings to his lands and carries the fear that his beloved Lyana may not make it to him, or he to her, soon enough. A tale of a brave witch, the Wiccan Queen, who is new to her powers and determined to learn all she can so she can defeat this evil and find her way back to her beloved king.
It’s a love story, woven through with action enough to whet the appetites of all who love a good medieval war, and enough heartfelt emotion to capture those who love to laugh, cry, and everything in between in a gripping fairy tale style fantasy. It offers everything any reader of fantasy could possibly want, and then some.
It has characters, some carried forward from Blessed King, like Karl, and Simeon, and that weird disembodied voice of Cauldron. Like Naldron and Blaine. Like Seekers and Duana , and of course, Jack and Lyana. In her character building we have found friends and foes, people to admire and people to loathe. She has such a talent for molding a thought, an idea, into a person whom I want to know everything about. The talent to make me care about characters to a point where if they laugh, I laugh. If they cry, I cry. This is such an amazing talent, and it’s getting better and better with each book this amazing author writes.
Her world building isn’t too shabby either. I can always see where I am in each scene. I can feel the horses when they shy, the winds when they cut to the bone, Tu Lanah as she beams down at night to light my way. I can see the battlefields, the dead and dying. I can see the towns bustling with people before war tears them apart. She paints a picture with words that I feel I could hang in my home, and look at anytime I please. Seriously, this author has come so far as to make her books as mesmerizing as some of my old favorites like Raymond E Feist’s Riftwars Saga, as Melanie Rawn’s Dragon Prince, even as Frank Herbert’s Dune. And to me, that’s high praise. I get lost in her stories, forget the world exists around me. As an avid reader, that’s the way it should be, the way I expect it to be, in a truly good epic fantasy.
Lyana has a lot to learn in this journey of hers, and going along with her was a treat I can’t begin to describe properly. I can’t wait for the next character she brings to life for us in the next book in the Eight Kingdoms.
You, Karen Tomlinson, are a wonder, and working with you has been a great joy for me. Watching you grow into something so profound has been my honor. This was Excellently Done, Karen Tomlinson, so very very Excellently Done! Thank you for bringing me along for the ride!
I received this book as an ARC, and have given this review in my own words and of my own volition. As always. But I loved it so much, I bought it anyway! As Always!
Sweet Jesus, so much action in only one book. I loved seeing how Lyana grew and embraced her wiccan side, how she learned to use her powers. Also seeing Jack turn into a real king, making the right choices. How their love grew and defied the odds. This book is the perfect balance between romance and action. We also were able to see how our old friends where doing, and what happened with Naldon and Lili? That turn took me by complete surprise. But I need more Simon… Cannot say much without spoiling so I will just say one thing… Give me more Simon
Wickedly addictive! This thrill ride held me captive from the first page. I was spellbound. I loved not only learning more about the characters and seeing them grow stronger but I really enjoyed seeing previous characters from the world as well.
Perfect sequel to blessed king. We see Lyanna become stronger and more confident in herself. I enjoyed seeing her go from quiet, reserved Lyanna to a fierce Wiccan Queen. Learning more about Jack and Lyanna’s families was interesting. I especially loved howit was told at relevant points in the story. Also, the world building is phenomenal! I can’t wait to see more of the eight kingdoms.
