In ancient Greece, the chimera was a bad omen. In WHY ME?, it’s a motive for murder. Bryn Baczek, a Seattle consultant, is vacationing in Scotland, hiking alone in a downpour, surrounded by midges, when she sees a body at the bottom of a ravine. Before she can return to the scene with the mountain rescue team, the body disappears. She learns that he was a scientist and that his laptop containing … containing his cutting-edge research has disappeared. Rumors that Bryn has the laptop make her a target.

Bryn Baczek is on vacation in Scotland, alone because her friend canceled at the last minute to spend quality time with her ‘new’ boyfriend. Even though everything she’s read warns her to not go hiking in the Highlands alone, Bryn does it anyway. While hiking in the pouring rain, she discovers a dead body. She tries to call the authorities, but she can’t find any cell service. So she leaves the dead man and walks quite a ways before calling. She shows the rescue team where she left the dead man, only he’s disappeared. Weird. She does a little digging and discovers the dead man is a scientist residing in Seattle, her hometown. When rumors start flying that Bryn has the dead man’s laptop with his research on it, her life is in peril. They’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on the research, no matter who they have to kill to get it. Can Bryn stay one step ahead of the criminals and unearth who they are, or will she be crying why me?
Why Me?: Chimeras, Conundrums, and Dead Goldfish is a delightful cozy mystery from start to finish. Bryn is an excellent amateur detective who doesn’t scare easily. The mystery behind the missing body and laptop kept me ripping through the pages. Once I started, I couldn’t stop reading. Descriptive narration with quirky characters makes this cozy mystery a must-read. Charlotte Stuart has a gift for mystery writing with plenty of humor and flawed characters. This was my first book by her and let me tell you, I will be reading more. Such a lovely cozy to curl up to with a cup of tea. Highly recommend!
Favorite Quote or Character:
Bryn. She’s such a fun character to read. Her inner dialogue had me in stitches. Her fish outta water circumstances and how she dealt with it all sealed my affection for her. A great character, full of humor and wit.
My Rating: 5 stars
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
What an interesting cozy this is! The title alone is enough to draw your attention making it quite fun to run across the parts of the story that make it fit. We meet Bryn as she goes on vacation. Things are going great until she just happens to stumble across a dead body while hiking alone in the middle of a downpour. By the time she goes for help and returns the body in no where to be found which is bad enough but then some bad guys start thinking she might have the dead guys laptop. What follows is quite fun as the mystery unfolds while the danger level increases. Full of fascinating characters, crafty clues, and a few unexpected twists that make it a great read for cozy mystery fans. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Why Me?: Chimeras, Conundrums, and Dead Goldfish is another fun and crazy cozy mystery from Charlotte Stuart. I love the way Charlotte Stuart writes her main characters. I embrace them as my friends right away.
When I started the book and saw that poor Bryn was caught in the pouring rain while hiking in Scotland, my heart went out to her. You know why? Because that would totally be me. Not that I am a big hiker or anything…neither is Bryn! She’s just trying to prove that she doesn’t need her friend Sophie, who flaked out on the trip at the last minute for a guy of all things, to enjoy the trip they’d planned. Well, not only does Bryn not enjoy the hike, she does not enjoy finding a dead body who disappears before help arrives!
You can see Bryn’s conundrum. The rescue team thinks she’s delusional and the guy must have been alive and walked off. But she knows what she saw. A dead guy who just happens to live in Washington state near Bryn! More conundrums occur when the bad guys think Bryn must be connected to the dead guy since they were in Scotland at the same time. Furthermore, they think she’s got his research!
The things Bryn goes through in Why Me? will have you laughing out loud while feeling sorry for her…and her goldfish. I love her friend Logan. He’s protective of Bryn while going along with her crazy investigations that she undertakes even though her detective friend Ben tells her to stay out of it. Who ever stays out of it in cozy mystery books?
This is a book you’ve got to read yourself in order to appreciate the author’s sense of humor. Read it free with Kindle Unlimited!
This is a delightful and quirky new mystery and it will definitely keep you on your toes.
Bryn stumbles across a dead body while on vacation in Scotland and she never could have imagined what would happen when she returned home. Some bad people think she took something from the dead man’s backpack and they want it back. Sadly, she doesn’t have it but these people will stop at nothing to retrieve the item(s).
We are introduced to some engaging characters that keep the story interesting. Bryn has two good friends, Sophie and Logan. Logan lives on a boat near hers with his partner Judd. The good thing about this partnership is that while Logan is a bit of a wildcard, Judd manages to balance his personality and ground him. Sophie is a good friend, but a bit of a flake IMHO. She bailed on a trip for a guy that she just met? Then there is Ben, a hunky detective that I think might have a thing for Bryn but only time will tell. There is a wildcard – Keith. He is rather suspicious with some of his actions, but is he a bad guy or a good guy?
The author does a great job of throwing many red herrings into the mix. While I kinda suspected the killer, I didn’t have a lot to go on and it was more of a gut feeling.
I think this is going to make an interesting series and I can’t wait to see what is on tap next for Bryn and the gang.
We give this 4 paws up.
