On Fire
The H.E.R.O. team, and especially Finn and Talon, just keep getting better and better. Not sure how since I think they’re pretty perfect as is. I loved all the danger, trust and found family that saturated this amazing book. Now on to Gael and his new partner!
4.5
Another fabulous novel in this action-packed, found-family-galore, highly romantic and utterly addicting series. I think I loved the first book a tiny bit more because I’m a sucker for books that start off with dislike and mistrust between the MCs that slowly morphs into love. The story though was much well-rounded and the action was non stop: I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Finn, as usual, was fantastic: he’s a truly wonderful MC, always careful and kind and so damn smart, and my heart broke for him quite a bit, since he spends half of the book worrying about not being enough for Talon. I loved him.
Talon, on the other hand, acted like a dick for a bit and while I loved seeing his more vulnerable and insecure side, I really wanted Gael to punch him again when he ends up needlessly hurting Finn (again). He does get points for being deliciously protective with Finn though, and he ends up redeeming himself quite nicely.
I kind of wished we got a longer, more developed ending though: that last chapter felt rushed, especially since there were a few things that needed to be explained more and I wished we got a bit more time with Finn and Talon finally admitting that their relationship is forever. I’m excited to read about Gael and Jake (SO excited) but I’ll miss not having Finn and Talon as MCs. Oh well, I’ll just have to do a re-read right?
Who We Truly Are by Victoria Sue
Enhanced World book 2. Paranormal M-M romantic suspense.
Finn goes undercover working for H.E.R.O. as a young Enhanced at a school where other Enhanced have disappeared. Talon, as both coworker on the force and Finn’s lover, is worried and doesn’t think Finn is ready for undercover work.
Finn and Talon are the same couple as the previous book, Five Minutes Longer. It’s a new relationship and the two struggle in this book being away from each other and the inherent danger in undercover work, plus the fact they haven’t really talked about their relationship in any depth.
My pet peeve, not talking to each other!
This book is a lot of the danger of the police work and the prejudice of the Enhanced but does finally have Finn and Talen talking to each other. And does included several steamy scenes between the two.
We also learn more about the special team of Enhanced and team members and their abilities.
I enjoyed the world building and although it’s not necessarily a nice world, the policing and abilities are intriguing and I can’t wait to read more of this series.
This is book 2 in the enhanced series and you do have to read in order. This one picks up after Talon and Finn have met, partnered and become lovers. This is being sent on their second mission where Finn will be going undercover in a foster home for enhanced kids to find out where the missing kids are going.
The story is intriguing, suspenseful and it also furthers the hotter than heck romance between Talon and Finn. we learn more about some of the characters, Talon himself included. We meet some cute adolescent boys with talents too. I already loved Finn but this story made me fall even more in love with him.
I listened to the audio and love the narration by Nick J Russo. He really kicks it up a notch giving as many different voices as he can. I did think a couple of the boy voices sounded more adult than a couple of the adult but it didn’t hinder the performance. If you can get these in audio I highly recommend it!
I would rate this 4 stars.
Book two of the series starts off with Finn, who was about to get some real tactical training, instead being pulled to go undercover at a group home as a 17 year old enhanced. Enhanced kids are going missing from foster homes, some ending up murdered. Talon is being over protective of Finn and they’re having a little friction working together and being lovers.
Undercover, Finn meets the enhanced kids at the home including Liam, whose dad used to work for Alan Swann from book one. He’s talking about creating a boarding school for enhanced, but it sounds like incarceration. Liam’s situation is heartbreaking. There are several enhanced kids introduced so if we keep seeing them in future books, they could be a series of their own as the next generation. Of course, Finn being Finn mananges to find trouble several times throughout the book. I like that he wants to save people, but he doesn’t really have the training and he keeps getting his ego hurt when people point that out. It’s been eight weeks and he can barely shoot a gun; he trained as an accountant. Part of the fun in this series is Finn geeking out over trivia and facts, so that continues.
One of the main issues is the ENu, who have the authority to sedate, transport, and forcibly detain an enhanced. It doesn’t matter whether that enhanced is a child or an adult. Most ENu seem to love their job and hate enhanced. When Jake Riley doesn’t fit that mold, he starts to have problems with his co-workers. I don’t want spoilers about the plot so this continues with the main mission, which is rescuing kids. The kids being murdered seems like a different case, so I expect that will continue on in book three. Since each enhanced is supposed to be partnered with a regular human, it’s not a suprise when Jake joins the team and I expect that partnership to be the focus of next book. Here, we finally get someone trained as law enforcement as former SWAT.
Here Talon’s backstory gets filled in when his mother arrives to try and bully him into politics. The pieces of how he met Gael and Vance are added to the puzzle. Talon’s abilities are evolving and he’s taken into custody after a dangerous incident. As usual, this affects the team and the politics involved in keeping the unit going come into play. There is a bit more of Eli seen in this book but him and Sawyer are the least fleshed out at this point. A little more levity and team bonding would go a long way here.
This book advances the plot lines quite a bit, but even though the sex scenes are hot, the romance between Finn and Talon is giving me whiplash. These guys need to work on their insecurities and actually talk to each other like mature adults. There is angst on both sides as we get the alternating POVs and I want to smack them both–Talon more often than Finn. In fact, it’s Finn who really cracks himself wide open in this book so I expect Talon to step up now or I am going to get irritated. I still love these guys though.
Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted the AUDIO copy of this book.
This is book two in the Enhanced Series, and you really SHOULD read or listen to book one, Five Minutes Longer, before you start this one. It’s a continuation of Talon and Finn’s tale, and not all is repeated here.
Talon and Finn are partners in all ways, it’s just not common knowledge. When Finn is sent undercover to try to locate the missing Enhanced children, Talon has to dig deep within himself to let Finn do his job, and then for Talon to do his, when Finn turns up missing too.
For most of this book, I wanted to punch Talon in the face so bloody hard!! He’s such an idiot when it comes to Finn doing his job, he really is! I get he cares for Finn, very much so, but Finn came into Talon’s world as his WORK partner, and that has to be front and centre. But no, Talon’s reaction to Finn going undercover is to bury his head in the sand, and ignore Finn. So much so, Finn thinks to leave Florida and find himself some who really appreciates him.
But in Talon’s defense, he is dealing with his ever increasing powers, taking on the powers of the other team members, and it does take its toll on him.
I found this one a little more explicit than book one, as Talon and Finn’s physical relationship seems to be the outlet for their work situations frustration, for BOTH of them. No complaining, min, no ma’am not at all! Even though I wanted to punch Talon, he does somewhat redeem himself when they get home!
The missing children has *some* conclusion, but there are still some unanswered questions. We meet some new people, both Enhanced and regular.
When Talon finally gets his head out his ass, and *literally* explodes, it’s Finn that brings him back from the brink. Finn’s words said to him, that words Talon longed to hear, and indeed say, manage to clear his mind and focus in time to save them both.
Nick J Russo again narrates. I love his narration again. His voices are clear, and consistent across both books, and I have no trouble following multi person conversations. His reading voice is deep and even, making it such an easy listen!
Russo gets all of Finn’s emotions when Talon almost blanks him, and I felt for Finn, I really did. Listening to a book is such a different experience to reading, and the narrator makes listening to this book such a pleasure.
Of course, a narrator can ONLY reads the words he’s given and if Victoria Sue continues to write about these guys, I’m gonna be listening! (I don’t like to flip between listening and reading in a series, I find I lose something if I do!)
Off to listen to book three, Beneath The Mask. I’ve a feeling Gael is in a world of hurt and the guys don’t really know how deep it goes!
5 stars for the book
5 stars for the narration
5 stars overall
**same worded review will appear elsewhere**
This book was absolutely AMAZING!
Seriously better than most of the superhero movies out there..!
In this book, we continue to follow Talon and Finn, Talon is struggling to be both the team leader and the boyfriend when it comes to Finn and Finn wants Talon to shows that he has enough faith in him to do his work, even though he is ONLY human.
The supporting characters (The Team) they are such a big part of the book, that you feel that you also get to know them a little more.
I know it’s Gael next and I’m sure will be just as good, but would like to see a book with Sawyer, Eli and Sweet Sweet Bo, finger crossed that we got it.
Who We Truly Are is the second book in the Enhanced series by Victoria Sue and this story just gets better and better. I love the humor and fun in these books, and the hot and sexy dynamic between Finn and Talon is just icing on the cake. Seriously, if you’re looking for a great paranormal romance the Enhanced series is just what you need. Just make sure you read Five Minutes Longer first before jumping into this book. (In fact this review has some spoilers from the first book – so be warned.)
I really enjoy the fresh and creative spin Victoria Sue puts on this genre. It’s a little bit dystopian but still completely relatable to the world we live in today. She explores some interesting facets of what the introduction of enhanced humans would do to our society. Most disturbing are the wide variety of ways families deal with having an enhanced child and the complications which come along with it. Likewise, the government is struggling to keep up with changes that need to be made to provide for enhanced beings.
Talon and Finn make an interesting duo as a team comprised of an enhanced and regular human as the FBI explores how a Human Enhanced Rescue Organization (H.E.R.O.) can work in this new world. I love the pairing of sweet, inexperienced Finn with Talon as the totally hot and sexy, slightly jaded, older agent. The challenges this dynamic creates are a carry-over from the first book and continue to test their relationship.
Talon has some tough times in Who We Truly Are. Between coming to grips with his deepening affection for Finn, his mother’s unwelcome reappearance in his life, and the changes going on with his abilities, Talon’s issues provide some interesting ways Victoria Sue could take this series, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.
Finn is just beginning to gain some confidence as an agent and wants to show he can do the job. Because he is still learning he makes some pretty bad mistakes, but he perseveres and suffers everything that goes along with having to own up to them. His insecurities come out in his romantic relationship with Talon too; but it’s okay because they work it all out in the sexiest way possible *wink*.
This is the perfect series for Nick J. Russo’s talented narration. He’s great at infusing a little humor in just the right places and his subtle brand of sexy snark lights me up just right. There are some intense scenes in Who We Truly Are and Russo brings the emotion, but keeps it real.
Victoria Sue has some wonderful tidbits about this series on her website, as well as a few scenes that didn’t make it into the books. So, if you’re a fan I encourage you to check it out. There are several ways the next book could go, but it’s safe to say it will be centered around Gael (yay)… and his new human partner. Whatever challenges the H.E.R.O.s face, it’s sure to be a seriously good time, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
