I love reading books with a foreign or strange setting. Whiteout put me right into the life-threatening conditions and the magic of Antarctica.
The author also gave me a story that was so intense, so suspenseful, so edge-of-your-seat, that I either turned the digital pages as fast as I could, or I put it down and walked away to let my heart rate return to normal.
Great character development and accompanying love story. So visual. This would make an awesome movie.
The writing is rich and layered. Looking forward to the next in the series.
This book kept my attention all the way through. Very entertaining!
3.5 stars
Angel and Ford are great characters and I loved the storyline but I felt it was just too long. For me there was too much internal dialogue that slowed the pace of what would have been an edge of your seat, action packed read. Don’t get me wrong it was action packed and thrilling in places but it lacked momentum. I probably will carry on with the series as I was intrigued by the cliffhanger.
This book does leave you hanging regarding the Major plot so you’ll be hanging on your seat waiting for the next book to come out. At least that’s how I feel. Hope it comes out soon!
I love an awkward character worth getting to know and by the end I can’t wait for the next book!
I just finished this book and can’t wait for the next one. The main characters were likeable and believable. The plot was fast moving and interesting. I would highly recommend it!
All I have to say is…I’ll never think about ice in the same way again! Great storytelling! Bravo!
I loved Angel and Ford. Angel wasn’t just a cook. She was tougher that she thought and seeing her in action solidified that thought. And Ford. He was a grumpy Gus for good reason, but once he opened up, oh man, he had so many layers!
Whiteout was an edge of your seat kind of read! Anders packed a lot in the pages and sometimes the adventure had me holding my breath to see where things would end up. And there were some crazy adventures happening down in Antarctica…overall, great read and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
Chilling. Absolutely Chilling. And there is no pun intended. From the moment the reader begins Chapter One, the icy grip of Antarctica and terror will take you over. For something is going terribly wrong at the Burke-Ruhe Research Station near the South Pole; Glaciologist Ford “Coop” Cooper senses it quickly right before the summer research crew is to leave the station. Station Cook Angel Smith experiences it – the ruthless actions she witnesses set in motion Ford and Angel’s long, frigid trek across the ice away from the mayhem towards what is hopefully safety.
I have never, ever read this author before, so this was quite an introduction! For me, this was a suspenseful, heart-pounding story of evil, survival and finally, romance. I always avoid spoilers at any cost, but I will say this read is feels like a classic thriller novel, with elements of a ruthless villain, a deadly item and possible political conspiracies. The romance was unlikely, warming the escape route Ford and Angel took from Burke-Ruhe across the desolate landscape. They were two broken souls hiding away, only to start healing emotionally as the journey physically tore them apart. It was intense and it was as wild as the wind that seemed to batter our two survivors.
This book was well-written, the descriptions vivid and the plot just this side of insane. It has been a very long time since a book so rattled me like this one. Did I like it? Yes, very much. Except be warned – there is some satisfaction with Ford and Angel plotline, but that was negated by the epilogue! It is a cliffhanger that left me vowing to never read this author again while scouring the internet for any information of the next book in the Survival Instincts saga. I wanted to tear my hair out in frustration – I craved an ending to the evil and did not get it, and I could not find a pre-order link for the next book. Aaackk! Yes, I am still rattled. And as tempting as it is to leave Ms. Anders a one-star review for leaving me hanging, any author that can leave me this upended deserves 5 stars.
This story, the world building and the chain of events make this a most enjoyable read.
Whiteout starts out with a bang and gives you some unbelievably breathless moments and then when our MCs head out to make the Antarctic trek, things slow down to an incredibly cold crawl. However, don’t lose faith, before long you won’t be able to keep up.
I loved these characters…all of them! Since it looks as though the author is planning more than one book in this series, I let myself go crazy and fall in love with all of them. I’m looking forward to more! No cliffie though for our couple in this edition, just a continuing story arc.
I recommend you test your survival instincts. Enjoy!
Utterly gorgeous and unputdownable. This story will get your heat pounding in so many different ways. Must read!
Strong heroines, sizzling tension. Heart and heat abound!
This was a slump buster of a book that left me wondering why Romantic Suspense doesn’t feature more prominently in my reading. The first in a series, Whiteout is a high stakes survivor story that has our hero and heroine fleeing across hundreds of miles of frozen tundra following an attack on the research station in Antarctica where they‘ve each been nursing the wounds of past traumas.
Our heroine, Angel Smith, is a Latina chef who’s signed on for a season at Burke-Ruhe station following a life shattering event that leaves her processing grief, betrayal, and disability.
Our hero, Ford (Coop) Cooper, is a neurodiverse glaciologist who’s built a life doing research in the icy silence of the white continent. A dedicated science nerd with a painful past as a military sniper, he often comes across as cold and taciturn, but is quickly rendered sympathetic through glimpses into his deep longing and the abundance of feeling that has him isolating to avoid overwhelm.
There’s a beautiful depth and balance to Angel and Ford’s individual characterizations. Angel’s warmth and ease of expression are cut with a delightful capacity for snark and a boundless tenacity. Ford’s stoicism, stark logic, and incisive nature are softened by a surprising gift for caretaking and a quiet, selflessness nobility. There’s also a satisfying balance between the two characters. She’s the sun warming his austral winter, and he’s the icy clarity reflecting her soul’s truth.
Antarctica is so vividly drawn it almost becomes a character of its own. The setting acts variously as a poetic reflection of Ford and Angel’s internal lives and as a source of external conflict.
The novel’s subzero setting necessitates a slow burn, but Angel and Ford’s obvious sexual tension is enough to fill a glacial plateau. Acute mutual awareness and forced deprivation create a white hot intensity long before they’re skin to skin. Once they are, the payoff is so good it prompted my instant conversion to team delayed gratification.
Also delicious is the competence porn Ford and Angel provide not just in the performance of their respective professions, but also in quick thinking and resourceful responses to exigent circumstances. Despite Ford’s superior survival and martial skills, Angel proves just as vital to their success, demonstrating extraordinary grit and determination. Rather than fall apart, both are sharpened by the extreme conditions, limited resources and ever present threat of enemies willing to kill to fulfill their mission.
While those enemies do possess the heightened evil of Bond villains, they’re also infused with a sensibility that makes them feel relevant. The big baddie is a corporate puppet master motivated by a toxic blend of grief, rage and entitlement who deploys a horde of conspirators who range from scientists to paramilitary goons.
The secondary characters are engaging, and provide promise of deeper exploration in the remaining books of the series. While Angel and Ford do get a satisfying HEA, the epilogue teases with a cliffhanger for some of the maverick veterans I assume we’ll be following into the next book, and I can’t tell you how furiously I tried to wish those pages into immediate existence on my Kindle.
CW: gun violence, trauma, murder, abduction
An interesting and gripping romantic thriller. I liked Ford and Angel and thought they worked well together in an opposites-attract kind of way. And the bad guys were wonderfully sinister.
I was absolutely enthralled with the authors description of the icy landscape Ford and Angel had to traverse in their race for their lives. I really felt like I could envision the barren surroundings, feel the icy mist, and the below zero temps. I lost myself in the story several times.
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
Wow. I stayed up VERY LATE the past two nights reading this book.
I didn’t want to put it down!!! I’ll admit that my blood pressure and anxiety levels were higher than I prefer for reading but it was worth it. The situational tension was unreal, the sexual tension was ridiculous as well.
I loved Angel and Ford. Angel was such an incredible heroine, even when things seemed impossible, she acknowledged it, out her head down and did what she could. Ford had a really incredible emotional development arc and I loved it when he let his tender side finally shine through.
Now, when is book 3 going to be available?
Angel Smith is a cook doing seasonal work in Antarctica. Ford Cooper is doing research in the ice there. He is grumpy and a loner but he is attracted to Angel and fighting it all the way.. When the station is attracted by mercenaries they are the only ones left alive and they go on the run through unbearable conditions. This is a fast paced adventure with conspiracy in high places, government cover ups and a cliff hanger that leads right into the next book..This book has a little bit of everything.
ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
Whew. This book is one long harrowing adventure. Set in the extremely cold and unforgiving Antarctica this romantic thriller along with its realistic descriptors of trying to survive the weather of the south pole keeps you turning the pages. The first 90% of the book is research scientist Ford Cooper and cook Angel Smith running for their lives on foot over 250 miles of frozen nothingness. The end brings in the cast of characters that will make up series and who will continue the fight to bring down those responsible for the death and chaos that was the main plot of this book. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
This story is a fast-paced, suspenseful read. It has non stop suspense and danger. This is the first book that I have read by this author. I love romantic suspense books and this was a good book but, it was a little too dark for me. Overall, it was a good, suspenseful read.
Wow! What an experience this book is. This book is full of adventure, suspense, and slow burn romance. Angel is a cook at a researcher station in Antarctica. She is about ready to leave as her time is up. Then she sees something she shouldn’t and she is in danger and stranded on the ice. That is until scientist Ford finds her. To her he has been this unapproachable, grumpy but very attractive research scientist. Ford keeps people at arms length and isn’t one for social interactions. It is his findings that are the cause of the danger they are both in.They now need to leave this station and find safety because time is running out. They are fighting against the harsh climate and also evil men that want what they have and they will kill for it. This book had me on the edge. There was danger around every corner. And talk about heated romance. This enemies to lovers romance had all the push and pull I adore. Nothing brings two people together like trying to stay alive. The adventure isn’t over either. This author leaves is wanting so much more.
4.5 stars!
Fans of Survivor and Naked and Afraid (only with more clothes on (necessity, people, not want LOL)) are going to love Adriana Anders’ Whiteout as much as I did. It’s a survivor story that pairs up the unlikeliest of duos in one of the harshest climates. I couldn’t put this book down.
Angel and Ford are at odds & ends when they first meet. Ford is more of a loner, always working out on the ice, and he goes out of his way to avoid Angel. He has no intention of leaving Antarctica, and he doesn’t like people or complications, and Angel is too vibrant to keep on the ice.
Angel is definitely a people person. She’s a cook running from her own displacement in the world, but she’s leaving soon and she doesn’t know what comes next. While she’s drawn to the grumpy and aloof Ford, she also thinks he’s a jerk who hates her.
Things aren’t looking so good when they find out they’re the only two left at the site with missing equipment, limited resources, and enemies on their tails.
Luckily, we have an Angel. And a Coop.
I loved how Coop knows what to do and has the whole quiet, alpha thing. But also, Angel knows her shit, too. The way Coop listened to her opinion and valued it? I’m here for it. Watching these two overcome their initial impressions and get to know each other–becoming a team–out on the ice was something I didn’t want to end. There were these pockets of such honest moments and feelings and unexpected hugs…loved!
And if competence porn is your thing…you’ve got it.
The only thing that I didn’t really enjoy was the drawn out ending. It went on a little too long, imo, and there are a lot of external enemy plotlines. That said, from the sleeping bag hijinks to the trek through subzero weather to the slow awakening of both of these MCs to each other, I fell in love hard with this book.
And there’s much more to come suspense wise. *puts on gear* I’m ready.
CW: murder (not MCs), gun violence
