WHITEOUT by Adriana Anders is the first book in the Survival Instincts romantic suspense and adventure series and is set mainly in Antarctica. The author brought this reader an intense and action-filled adventure story.
Angel Smith has spent the summer as a chef at a remote research station and is ready to leave before winter sets in when the station is attacked. She and glaciologist Ford (Coop) Cooper barely escape, but there are few places to go. They have no power, no way to contact the outside world, and a team of mercenaries chasing them. Can Angel and Coop get to safety? Can they take enough food and essentials to survive the trek? Who attacked the research station and what was the impetus for the attack? Was it successful? What follows is a suspenseful survival story with a romance weaved into the story line.
Angel is a character that you definitely can root for, but Coop is rather reserved and harder to get to know. However, the progression of their relationship made sense as a partnership for survival and some initial attraction was tested by the need to survive.
The author brought a strong sense of place to light in this novel. The subzero temperatures, harshness and inhospitableness of Antarctica was balanced with its beauty, isolation and peacefulness. However, the book was short on dialogue in places. Some of this was necessary due to the circumstances. Instead, there is a lot of introspection by both Angel and Coop which added depth to their characters. Additionally, there is some insight into the villains in this story and we get perspectives from a couple of them which enriches the tale. Running from the past, danger, action, steamy scenes and much more kept this reader entertained and wondering what could happen next.
Overall, this novel kept me engaged and made me grateful that I was not enduring the stark reality of wind, snow, and cold that Angel and Coop faced. I have read other books set in Antarctica, but this one is by far the best. I felt somewhat let down by several loose ends. I know the epilogue set up the next novel, but I would have preferred that the information was put at the beginning of the next book in the series. What a cliffhanger! Despite, this, I am looking forward to reading book two which is currently slated to be published August 31, 2021.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, Sourcebooks Casablanca. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date was January 28, 2020. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.
Exciting Survival Story If You Can Stand the Violence
The adventure and suspense were great, but the violence was too graphic for me, especially at the beginning. It made me feel more depressed than excited and I almost put the book down. I’m glad I kept reading because the story got better. The Artic setting painted a good picture of the danger Angel and Ford faced from their surroundings and the enemy. They were strong characters and worked well together. The book ends on a new crisis, but I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger because Angel and Ford were settled. The end was more like a lure into the next book in the series.
A decent thriller/survival/romance (first in the Survival Instincts series).
Fairly predictable and sometimes unbelievable I think what I enjoyed the most was the author’s description/sense of place for the setting of a research station on the South Pole…I could almost feel the bone-deep cold and harsh conditions. My favorite character was the cook, Angel, who came into her own and was basically the hero of the story.
Danger comes in many forms in the Antarctic. It’s not just the weather that’s out to get Ford and Angel!
Extreme weather, extreme danger, and extreme passion. Sure the romance may be mistimed occasionally but, heck, it’s romantic suspense – real-life rules do not apply! Let’s just say their fist full-on liplock made my toes curl in a good way!
Action, adventure, and unexpected heroes. A Glaciologist and Chef are not your usual action heroes. But they are super resourceful and it’s nice to see the nerds save the day!
Whiteout is the first full-length book of the Survival Instincts series and features Ford and Angel. The first story, Deep Blue, is a novella about Ford’s brother, Eric. I wouldn’t say it is necessary to read the novella first, but it is available for free so why not? It will provide some background info for parts later on in the story.
Ford and Angel are in Antarctica when their station is attacked in order to steal dangerous research. They find themselves trekking across the ice to another research facility. So much action and death-defying heroism. Ford is a former military and all-around badass, so we expect him to be brave in the face of danger. Angel is a chef at the research facility but has nerves of steel. They find out so much about themselves as individuals on the journey and that makes when they get together so much better.
I really enjoyed Deep Blue and Whiteout. Deep Blue was my first read from Adriana Anders and I appreciate her writing style and heroines. They are definitely not damsels in distress.
‘The Ice Man… cometh.”
Whiteout is an action-packed, steamy arctic adventure by Andriana Anders! It’s the first full novel in the author’s new Survival Instincts series. I was hooked from the start. The subzero temperatures would turn me off from ever physically going to Antarctica, but the author transported me there with her words. I could feel the frostbitten fingers, the welcome heat generated as a hot romance sizzled within sleeping bags and the desperation at our hero and heroine’s dire straits. This is the story of Chef Angel Smith and Doctor Ford “Ice Man” Cooper.
Ford is a research scientist at the Burke-Ruhe Research Station at the South Pole. He’s a surly reclusive and a permanent resident at the Station. He’s not a conversationalist and avoids emotions like the plague. He finds the isolation on the ice to be a coping mechanism as he struggles with the chaos of being around his fellow humans. While out checking on his experiments, Ford spots blood. He rushes back to the Station to find it completely deserted except for the bubbly woman he has successfully-until-now kept his distance from since she arrived.
Angel is Ford’s complete opposite. She’s bright, happy, smart, innovative and ready to say sayonara to the cold and isolation of the Station. She took this temporary cooking assignment to give herself time to recover from an abusive ex and the tragic loss of her dreams. Her stint at the Station is within hours of being done when she comes upon a murder-in-process. She barely escapes with her life but is left locked within an icy grave. Thank goodness for Ford who releases her. However, it’s a given that the killers will be back.
Ford and Angel are left with no choice but to trek across miles of ice in a chilling race to save themselves and humanity. It’s do or die as they run for their lives from villains that give the word ‘mad” a new, more chilling, meaning.
Following please find a few of my favorite lines from Whiteout:
We’re heading out into the most dangerous place on earth with killers after us?”
“Yeah.” He couldn’t help a grim smirk. “Better hit the road.”
—
Suddenly, he understood why he couldn’t have her back then, or now. Or ever.
He was a starving man and she was an oasis, a hallucination, a single sparkling drop of water in his desiccated world. And the problem with giving in, drinking that water, getting just one little taste, was that he’d know exactly what he’d been missing. And he’d never, ever be able to go back.
—
There was a reason he’d avoided Angel Smith. Already, she’d started seeping under his skin, making him feel things he preferred not to think about.
And it felt so good it scared him.
Whiteout is a slow-burning, searing-hot romance with strong characters and fascinating, often witty, dialogue set in a vast, frigid, lethal but beautiful emptiness. The sexual tension is off-the-charts and paired with thrilling twists and turns galore. I found myself on the edge constantly and hoping for a miracle. The author further escalates the tension as each chapter headlines how far they are from their destination and their dwindling food supply.
Don’t be worried that you’ll combust from the intense nature of this story. The author includes plenty of humorous respites to break the stress. I laughed out loud when Angel commented that pulling their butter was a terrible exercise program. And I salivated as Angel talked about food. Mmmm. That said, I found every second of the torture all worth it for the well-deserved happy ending at the conclusion of this mega-harrowing adventure.
Immediately after finishing this tale, and not ready to leave Whiteout’s addictive spell, I found and inhaled the preceding novella, Deep Blue. Deep Blue features Ford’s brother, ex-Navy seal Eric Cooper, who is a supporting character in Whiteout. Reading Deep Blue was fortuitous indeed as it answered some lingering questions I had after reading Whiteout.
Go fix yourself a warm drink, wrap yourself in a blanket and read this book! I’m so glad I did and can’t wait to read more from this author soon!
Ariana Anders delivers a captivating, fast pasted icy thriller full of mystery, nail biting suspense, fighting for your life action, murder, secrets, lies and deception, that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the end. What an amazing read, a definite page turner from start to end!
It’s your typical love story. They hate each other but in reality are enamored. Steamy looks, accidental touches, it’s just predictable. It is fairly well written.
Plenty of characters, lots of intrigue, lots of ice and danger and things going on. Less romance and more of everything else. Finished as a continuation of a larger story where everyone is rescued/killed by the larger story.
Just ok . Adventure plot; no depth
