White Sheep of the Family is a great second instalment of the Scions of the Black Lotus series. Like the first book, it centres on Jie, who now investigates the crimes committed against her clan and attempts to find what caused the betrayal of one of her closest.
The story is fast-paced, vividly described, and has plenty of action. It is exciting and beautifully written.
Tian was a nice addition since his questions helped clarify many of the things that happened in the first book, as well as some of the terminology used. I found it really helpful, and I liked his young and innocent ways.
And last but not least, we are – again – faced with some pretty awesome twists and turns, and the ending left me wanting more! It’s a fabulous novella!
JC Kang does it again. I never thought I would enjoy a courtesan story so much, but this is fun. There’s a new addition to the ensemble, Zheng Tian, who I remember liking a lot in Songs of Insurrection. Tian is brought in to the Black Lotus Clan because of his powers of observation. And while much about the world of Jie and Little Wen baffles him, he is able to figure out the rest of the story that began in the previous book. What was Lilian up to? Who was she working with? And what was the purpose of Lord Ting’s assassination in the previous story?
Tian was cute. Always dreaming about Princess Kaiya, his betrothed (really?), he couldn’t help being fascinated by the incredible skills of the women of the Black Lotus. But then, he was only ten in this story. And ten-year-olds see all the magic that is in the world. I also felt even worse for Jie. She was never my favorite but watching her go from trusting others to expecting betrayal around every corner was heartbreaking. There are good, trustworthy people even in your world, Jie!
While many things were wrapped up neatly by the end, I have the suspicion that the adventure is only beginning and look forward to reading whatever comes next.
I received a free audiobook from the author and reviewed it willingly. The narrator, once again, did a fantastic job with all the character voices.
A new life for Zeng Tian with the Black Lotus Clan. Master Yan has saved Tian from death by the Imperial Court. Now he is in training as an initiate of the Black Fist. Tian is smart and intelligent but has been taught in the ways of the wealthy. He must be broken of his former ways and taught the ways of the Black Fists. Tian is learning his new fighting skills, but his ability to memorize and reconstruct things in his head are amazing. Jie, as his instructor. Is accepting him as a part of the Black Fists. Read to discover how Tian’s abilities help Jie to uncover the traitor of the Clan. Great short story that continues adding to The Legend of Tivara.
Overall rating: 4.5
The addition of a young boy to the clan added a different twist to this storyline. Things are much more complicated now with more than just virtues and honor to be concerned over. This book went quick and so of course I am seeking out the third. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
