When my eyes are closed, the monster can’t see me.When I sing a song in my head, the monster can’t hear me.When I pretend my bedroom is a playground where I play hide-and-seek, the monster can’t find me.The darkness should frighten me.I should worry I’ll find more monsters…monsters scarier than him.But I’m not afraid. It’s safe here. When I’m inside of my head… here.
When I’m inside of my head…
He. Can’t. Ever. Touch. Me.

Whispers and Roars is the type of story that reminds me just how much I love K Webster and her wicked mind- how creative, innovative, and original she is as an author. Always playing outside of trope, giving us provocative and interesting, challenging our psyche and our comfort, and pushing boundaries- K Webster’s stories are always provocative and psychologically intense, and this story is a perfect encapsulation of her dark, perverse story telling- with, of course, a twist.
And, this is also a reminder about why I know that K Webster is also not for everyone- this story isn’t her darkest or most taboo in my opinion, but it has all the hallmarks of her storytelling that make her work perhaps not for everyone- the components that some find triggering. So, take note if this applies to you.
On the surface, this seems like another dark contemporary- where our heroine Kady, broken by trauma, finds connection in childhood friend Yeo- in their second chance to connect after Yeo has gone away to school. The characters here are fascinating. Yeo is perhaps K Webster’s dreamiest man- patient, kind, supportive- he rolls with the punches here in a way that is admirable. And Kady clearly has some personal issues- rooted in her past, exacerbated by all those around her. Parts of her life and experience are just heart shattering (and will be triggering to many), but she’s also clearly a survivor with a big heart- and the love of Yeo and her friend Bones sustain her despite the pain caused by other characters.
Outside of that, I won’t say much. K Webster and those recommending this book recommend going in blind. But, I’ll be honest- I didn’t. Perhaps hypocritical since I’m not going to provide spoilers here even though I myself sought them out- but I want you to decide that for yourself. For me, I love K Webster’s dark mind- I don’t have many triggers, but I also know to expect the unexpected with her and that she will challenge my little societal contrived conception of romance. I like the challenge- in fact thats why I seek her out- she asks us to lean into our darkness, depravity, dysfunction. She asks us to find resonance and beauty in the dark and disturbing, in the wrong and taboo. And I dig it- but I also like to know what I’m getting myself into with her so I can my mind right to lean into her themes- so here, I did. And while I won’t spoil you to anything else, just know that K Webster is suverting herself here. She lulls you into the safety of her own dark romantic paradigm- so much so that you think you know exactly where this is going, and then she shatters it. And how brilliant is that? An author that has created such a deep set niche for herself, such a unique voice, that she can use her own self-created trope to subvert our expectations and shock us. Cause there is a SHOCK, and I’m not sure I would have seen it coming.
This story is definitely different, again even from K Webster’s own cannon. And that’s what I love to see an author doing- pushing not only the boundaries of the genre, but the boundaries of their own imagination, to dig into the psychology of love and connection. Something especially compelling with how proflicially K Webster writes. No matter what – she asks us to examine what unsettles us, make space for it in our hearts- and this is another success at that, just not how I anticipated
K Webster really said “I’m going to fuck ya’ll up this time.”
Us: Yasss Queen!!
K Webster: *rips my heart out and stomps on it*
Me: “It hurts so good!”
One of my favorite books in the whole entire world! K. Webster blew me out of the water with this one. I REFUSE to give away any spoilers but it’s best to go into this one blind.
Beautifully written book! Absolute brilliance!
This book! I don’t want to say much because please, please, please go in blind. You won’t regret it! K Webster continues to dazzle me with her stories. This book was an experience. It was unique and thought-provoking and sweet and heartbreaking and lovely. 5 glowing stars from me!
whispers and the ROARS is a standalone by K Webster, and I really enjoyed this one! Kady is such a complex character, made even more so by the trauma she went through when she was young and the struggles she faces now to get a bit of normalcy. I felt such empathy and sadness for her, because even though she’s not alone, she really kinda is. She finds strength in people around her, but she also has great strength in herself she needs to call on. I really think the highlight of this book is Yeo, though. What a MAN. So understanding, patient, loyal, and wholeheartedly DEVOTED to the love of his life, Kady. He fights WITH her, FOR her, and always towards a future with her. He loves all the broken pieces, never wanting her to change, only giving his compassion and love. I don’t know much about the topic that K Webster writes about here, but she certainly did her research, and even linked some sites for you to explore on your own. And that’s what I love about books; it opens your mind to so many things you never would’ve known before.
“Yeo is my drug. And I willingly give my biggest vein to him to inject his life into me.”
“Something was missing and I wanted to fill it. I wanted to fill your heart with me.”
“Yeo makes love to me with an intensity that won’t die with this life. It roars and roars and when we’re both long gone from this world, it will ripple with whispers until the end of time.”
“I love you at your best and I love you at your worst. I love every single part of you. I always have and always will. I even love the parts I hate about you. How fucking weird is that? And I’ll continue to love you in every capacity, no matter how strange that makes me. I’ll fill in the missing voids of your heart with parts of mine.”
In true K. Webster fashion, I am left breathless and stunned. She completely blew me away with Kady, Yeo’s and Bones story. Gripping, intense, emotional, jaw-dropping and phenomenal read! Go in blind. You won’t be disappointed. I received an advanced copy of this book and am enthusiastically leaving an honest review.
There are a lot of triggers. Pay attention to the warnings! Throughout this book I cried for Kady, I cried for Yeo and I cried for Bones. By the end I was cheering for their success. Kady was broken and damage by horrible events in her childhood. Bones was her protector. Yeo was the amazing boy/ man that lived her despite her flaws. This book will take you to the unimaginable. You need to keep an open mind. A definite page turner. I was prepared to stop at times but had to find out how it all came together. It was difficult getting through the hard stuff. I was close to halfway through when I figured out what was going on.
An psychological romance that will wreck you . The characters bring out all the raw emotions. As usual this author leaves your mind blown.
A mind is a crazy place for most of us but for our Heroine, her mind is truly a crazy place with lots going on, and a lot of battles within herself that she is trying to heal. She fell in love with the boy next door but she knew she had to let him go and she did until that boy shows up on her doorstep years later and not taking no for an answer determine to show her she is good enough for him. I honestly don’t how this story worked but it works so well K. webster’s minds is truly a mystery for me on I would love to take a trip in.
***4,5 “The Terrible Three!!!” stars***
“You are terrifying and strange and beautiful, something not everyone knows how to love.” -Warsan Shire
Wow!!! This book really took me by surprise and the weird thing is that… I really loved it!!!
I have loved all these weird and unusual characters very much and i love how they managed to crawl under my skin!!!
This was such a different story than the usual one, especially the ones that K. Webster is known to write… And even though, in the first half, you were kind of confused, still… this unique story did a mumber on you…
My only warning??? Just go in it blindly and you will be rewarded…
“He’s calling for me, but I’m drowning. His whispers are drowned out by the goddamned roars.”
Honestly, I have no much words about this book, because each one of these words might be a spoiler and a spoiler won’t do justice in this book!!! It will take away the surprise element and the satisfaction to unravel all these secrets that Kady and Yeo are holding into their hearts and minds…
Their love was unique and had many struggles in it!!!
But with a man like Yeo by your side, you could do the impossible possible!!!
“You made me leave.”
“You weren’t supposed to come back.”
I loved Kady very much… She was a unique girl with a heavy past that was clouding her future…
She would do anything in order to survive the monsters that were rearing their ugly heads into her direction…
Yeo was such a strong man, mentally and physically, because what he had to endure because of his love of this girl was too much for any person… But he was a fighter and he was determined to bring her back to him…
The whispers and the roars were surrounding their lives, but they learned to live that way!!!
Their love was the only light that could guide them in the darkness…
“Love and my moral compass duel in the dark night.
Love is more fierce and unstoppable and fucking crazy.
Love always win.
That moral compass never stood a chance.”
I won’t hide to you that there were too many interesting personalities in here that made me fall for them and the greatest of all was Bones!!! I liked that boy very much!!!
The same goes for many others that I can not name right now… They are too many!!!
The only sure thing is that this was a very unique and interesting reading that deserves everyone’s attention…
Just close your eyes, take a deep breath, open your mind and you are about for a wild and unusual ride that will get under your skin!!!
“She may be hiding from love… But love will eventually find her.”
**I received an ARC for the exchange of an honest review**
This was my first K. Webster book ( I know I’m late to the party!) and I can’t believe I waited so long. This story blew me away. Definitely go in blind!! It made this book so much more for me. I feel so deeply about this book and Kady’s story. You can definitely tell K. Webster put her heart in this book. This is one for the shelves. I am honestly on my way to devour the rest of K. Webster’s book!
I liked the book overall, Yeo and Kady were an interesting couple.
I don’t want to give anything away. I will say I did go in blind and don’t regret it. With that being said please take the Authors warning seriously. This isn’t for everyone, K Webster is very good at pushing boundaries. I did see the twist coming but it done in way that builds you up to it.
The author never disappoints and this was no different she gives us a delicious dark tale that we cannot get enough of it will leave the reader turning the pages and devouring every word. Overall I throughly enjoyed the story.
Oh my heart is still hurting and pounding over this book. Whispers and the Roars is no joke. K. Webster takes you to a dark place. Tears will flow and you will not expect the plot twists and turns. My heart was racing in some parts. It is such a well written story. I have found that once I start a story my this author, I cannot stop reading it. Same thing happened with this book.
At the end my mind was a jumble mess, but a good kind of mess. I could not get enough of this story and felt what I call “blankly” because all I could think about for hours was this book. You need to read Whispers and the Roars if you need something dark and addicting.
Kady has been through so much in her life but pushing the person she loved most away was the worse part. She survived it but now the past is back, can she be happy or someone ruin it? Yeo has been in love since he was a kid but had to deal with family obligations. Can he finally get the girl he’s always loved?
This was not at all what I expected but it sucked me in just the same. There is a warning about the story already but I need to emphasize that this is not an easy read. It is dark and has some rather troubling events but K Webster knows how to write those. If you are sensitive, do not read this. I will say that there are some other issues I personally had with the story but it’s all on me and I’d rather not spoil it for anyone.
is a -.
A MIND-BLOWING Read!!
The characters are well developed and so consuming. The story is spoken from , & ‘s POV.
At first I thought Kady is a complicated character but then I felt her! Complicated but wonderful character.
I LOVED Yeo!! His love for Kady melted my heart!
He is the most understanding, supporting & caring partner EVER! He has my whole-heart.
And Bones – He is motherfu*king BONES! Strong, Resilient & Unbreakable!
God, I’m still not over these characters!
From the start the story hold me captive and at nearly 57% *BHOOM* Plot twist I never saw coming!
A heart-wrenching, dark, disturbing, twisted, gritty and amazing story!!
I had to take a deep breath to consume the whole story, the characters and the tornado of emotions I felt after reading this MASTERPIECE !!
I love K Webster’s amazing & intense writing style.
This is my first book by K Webster and can’t wait to read more by her.
Everyone should read this book but DO check the trigger warning.
‘ : ***This Standalone is best enjoyed when you don’t read any reviews or spoilers before reading. Going in blind is best. Trust me.***
Such a different book, I’ve never read anything like it. Original in plot, all consuming and full of intense moments. I couldn’t put it down and with every page I read the story just got even better. Whispers and Roars was nothing like I expected, I’m glad I didn’t read any of the spoilers as not knowing what was happening made the story 100% better.
Strongly recommended if you prefer things a little dark and different. For those with triggers maybe this isn’t the book for you.
I really do not know where to start with my review of Whispers and the Roars by K. Webster except to say I devoured it and you should stay away from spoilers. Though there is a trigger warning you should note if triggers are hard for you as a reader. Otherwise, this is a book that needs to be experienced. This was a story about a deep kind of love, heartbreak, and full of unexpected twists. The characters will captivate you. Their journey will be a hard one, but you will want to know what happens. Some of it will be hard to read and yet you will continue to turn the pages, I know I did.
Happy reading!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie’s Book Reports.
I went into this book blind. I read the description when we signed up to review it but by the time I got to it I had forgotten it. I think going in blind, not looking at reviews and definitely no spoilers is the way to go with this book. I’ve sat here for a while and thought about how to review this book. I just don’t see a way to do it without giving something away. That would be a disservice to the author and readers everywhere.
I will tell you that once I started I didn’t put it down. Whispers and the Roars deals with mental illness. It’s also a love story and if you don’t believe in love you will by the time you finish this book. K Webster has written a book that will keep you reading and will make you feel things you’ve not ever felt before. I for one highly recommend this book and don’t feel bad if while reading you have to put it down a time or two. I did. Got my emotions in check and dove right back in. This is one that you do not want to miss.
