Whispers is a cute, fun short story with charming characters, ghosts, a touch of suspense and danger, and some romance. It is the perfect quick grab for Halloween.
Courtney is a caterer by profession and she has a quirky, sweet, independent, determined personality and she is keeping a secret. She is not afraid to go after what she wants and now that she is back in town to stay, she has her eyes set on Owen, her childhood best friend and the boy who stole her heart in high school. She only has to convince him they belong together and hope he will hang around after she shares her secret. No problem, right?
Owen is the Chief of Police and does things by the books. He has become more serious over the years and has no time for games. Especially on Halloween, when he is in the middle of a case and when all the pranksters are out in force. He is not even a big fan of the holiday anymore, so he has his work cut out for him to keep his attitude in check and solve his case before it escalates into something dangerous. It definitely does not help that his high school sweetheart is back and he promised her deceased grandmother that he would look out for her. Sparks fly when they are near so he tries his best to steer clear but when she calls needing help he can no longer deny the pull. However, when secrets are revealed will it bring them closer together or rip them apart for good?
Paranormal romantic comedy. It’s not a combination I run across very often, but it’s one of my favorites. This one has the added bonus of including the romantic suspense the author does so well. This fun little Halloween story sucked me from the beginning. I laughed at Courtney’s pratfalls and wanted to smack Owen for being such a big oaf. But when the chips were down, they pulled through for each other. I loved this story and I want to read more about them.
I read a borrowed copy of this book.

A sweet romance with a touch of suspense and friendly ghostly spirits at Halloween. A really fun read with Owen, Courtney, and her Grandma Lily. Can Owen as police chief protect Courtney when he believes she’s playing games just to get his attention? She keeps hearing things and believes people have been in her house. Once burned with the game, he has a hard time believing things are real. Grandma Lily as a ghostly spirit tries to work her magic.
Will there be a happy ending? A must read.
If you’re looking for a lighthearted and fun Halloween read, this is the one to click. There are three main characters in this book – Owen, Courtney – and Courtney’s grandma’s ghost. There is a good mix of spooky, romance, and mystery, and a hefty dose of good reading. It is a short story, so it’s kind of a delightful bite-sized snack.
