In the centuries old war between Dragons and humans, one young woman finds herself reevaluating where the battle-lines have been drawn- and on which side she stands. When the High King makes a move to subjugate her human city and drain it of valuable resources, 22-year-old Azmarin escapes to bring back help. What she finds instead, is an isolated stronghold of Dragon warriors who are resistant to … resistant to her pleas for assistance. The Dragon King of Llyr is of little help either- a dark, brooding man who seems hell-bent on keeping her stranded and at his mercy. Their battle of wills leaves Azmarin questioning her own resolve and what is possible with so many tangled webs of history coming into play.
Caught up in a world of passion, magic and adventure, she must sway her new companions to her cause. The future of her home -and her heart- is at stake.

The second book in The King’s Series a well written story that kept me turning pages. You can read this book on its own and it does not take away from the story. This is human Azmarin and Umber the Dragon King of Llyr”s story. I want to read the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love a book that pulls you into a whole new world, filled with nefarious characters, devious enemies, and tempting dragon-shifting hotties. That is what Jillian James brings you with the second book in her series. There was tension, excitement, and some sexy, sexy scenes. Don’t even hesitate, if you love sexy fantasies, this is the book for you!
It was an okay story. I guess I am not into dragons. This is for someone that loves dragons. I got the book through story origins and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I gotta say I liked this book much better than the previous one. While Song of Smoke had its charm and curious twists, it didn’t have that spark and intense buildup that I oh so enjoy in a romance. Whisper of Water rectified that pretty damn perfectly.
I loved the enemies to lovers theme. Especially with such hot and cold between Umber and Azmarin. Them both coming from complete different worlds with him being on top and her basically the prisoner just added that extra flare of drama and tension that I crave and I loved how this hate and anger slowly but constantly built up to something more. The way they broke down each other’s walls and finally came together was a bit underwhelming for me and there were moments where I felt it a bit too slow paced, but that might just be me being a bit too picky for my own good. Overall I immensely enjoyed the relationship from start to finish, especially the finish.
This was a giant step up from book one and I am really glad to see that. Not that there was necessarily anything wrong with the previous book, but I am very impressed with how much the writing has developed from one book to the other especially when it comes to characterization. That was my biggest issue in Song if Smoke considering I didn’t feel like I got that much personality from the characters which in turn hurt the relationship as well. I don’t know if it was the way the romance was built up or something else, but in Whisper of Water that issue was nonexistent. When it came to the main characters at least. I still feel like the side characters could have used something more to tell them all apart, but as for Umber and Azmarin personalities I am very happy with the result.
Just based on the main characters and the romance this book was really made to be a captivating read. Sadly, there were aspect of the story that made me a bit confused and wanting for something more. One being the “big revelation” closer to the end. I didn’t really understand why she felt so betrayed and at odds with him when she, in my book, should almost feel the opposite. Her reasoning behind her emotions didn’t really make sense to me and felt a bit weak. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the drama that came with it, but I would have liked a more valid argument behind it and also, an explanation as to why she didn’t recognize him would have been preferable.
The rest were really only small stuff, like how Destan’s attraction towards Azmarin was kind of left forgotten. It would have been nice to have seen that dealt with as well and would have for sure added a little bit of extra spice to the storyline. And Lorie could have played a bigger part in the story and in the conclusion with her jealousy and hate towards Azmarin. However, it being left out I still didn’t really feel that it hurt or ruined the story in any way either. Looking at the whole picture I am satisfied with the story as it was and will gladly give it 4 stars.
