THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Such an intriguing story and the narration was perfectly done. I enjoyed plot. Characters are very easy to enjoy. I recommend this book.
This is the third installment of the Widow’s Island series, and it must be read in order to understand what’s going on with the main mystery going on through out the series.
When the body of Jason McCoy, a local contractor washed up on the beach, Deputy Tessa Black realizes that there’s been yet another murder on the island. This time though, there’s a line of people who would want the victim dead. Everyone from his current wife, to his ex-wife, from customers, to fired employees. Tessa will have to unravel the mystery surrounding his murder and figure out who did it.
While investigating, she finds something she never thought she would. While searching the pump house at the old apple orchard that’s being renovated and made into an in, she discovers the necklace her friend Sam was wearing when she went missing 20 years ago. It’s 1/3 of a heart that Sam, Tessa, and Cate all wore that said, “Best Friends”. But that’s not all. Cate, now an FBI agent on leave while recovering from a shoulder wound has started going through the missing person file the former Sheriff had started on Sam and notices that the statements both Tessa and Cate made after her disappearance are missing. It seems that someone on the island is hiding something about Sam’s disappearance.
I am so happy that I was looking for something different to read when I stumbled onto this series. The writing is excellent, the characters are wonderful, and I especially like the story line. You’ve got one mystery happening in each book, but there’s a larger mystery that’s taking shape overall and it drags you in. I’ve become invested in the series. I need to know what happened to Sam, I want to see what happens with Cate and Henry, and Tessa and Logan.
If you’re a fan of mysteries and suspense, grab a copy of Close to the Bone (book 1) and start reading today, you’ll be glad you did.
**I borrowed this title using my Kindle Unlimited subscription
I am enjoying this series of novellas, especially since I am listening to them in audio! This one is about a body that washes up on the beach. Turns out this body was dead for hours prior to being put in the water. Turns out he is a contractor and there are lots of twists and turns and then an arson added in. More insights into Tessa, Logan, Cate and Henry (the local doctor/coroner) and getting closer to knowing what happened to their missing friend Samantha. Definitely looking forward to the next book!
Whisper of Bones is the third novella in the Widow’s Island series by Authors Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. It released in October 2019, and I finally made time to read it thanks to Kindle Unlimited. It also helps that I’m now out of a reading slump thanks to reading these novellas. Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot always know how to get this reader back into her reading schedule with their suspenseful stories and kick-butt characters.
The fabulous Melinda Leigh writes the third novella in the series, and it follows Tessa Black and Logan Wilde again with another murder investigation. This time it involves a body being discovered by kayakers. They realize right away that it’s a murder due to after inspecting the body and scenery for any foul play. Unfortunately, this time it may involve several suspects since the murder victim is well-known for being a jerk. It’s not going to be a straightforward investigation for either character, and I enjoyed following these two to figure out who killed the man they found murdered. This one is not as gruesome, but it does involve some people that have the motive to kill.
Both Tessa and Logan are together now in this book, which I love since they are meant to be together. If you read the second book, you would’ve read the connection right away with these two lovable characters. Readers will get more into Logan’s head and what he is dealing with after what he went through in the Army. This book will bring back those memories that he longs to forget, too, with what Tessa and Logan have to face in the book.
Melinda does another fantastic job with keeping me turning the pages (scrolling on my kindle in this case) with the story, and I can’t wait to read more after the ending in this novella. I need to know more about the biggest mystery that both Tessa and Cate are trying to find out more about, and that is what happened to their friend twenty years ago. There was something that happened in this book that may have brought more evidence to sight.
I meant to mention this in my review of this second novella, but I love how Tessa fears a chicken. She ends up dealing with the ‘mad hen’ a couple of times in the previous novella and this novella. For someone that deals with chickens on my little farm, I can say chickens and roosters can be mean little creatures. The roosters tend to be more robust if you don’t teach them right away who’s boss. Poor Tessa fears for her life due to that crazy chicken. She puts up with the chicken since her mother, who has dementia, adores her chickens. I feel for you, Tessa. A mean rooster had chased me before when all I was doing was jogging around my property. Mean little creatures, but they do help produce eggs and eat all those crazy little bugs.
I truly have a love-hate relation with novella’s!!!! It’s like you just get started, the book is great than BAM it’s over and your like wait…what!!!
I love Melinda Leigh and all her books!!! Her characters are the best and there’s always murder, mayhem, twists/turns, with just the right amount of romance.
This was a quick, fast-paced, page turner.

Another great installment in the Widow’s Island saga. I so enjoy this series due to the interesting characters and story lines. This story is centered around Tessa and Logan’s journey to solve a murder and share more of each other’s lives. I finished this in an afternoon because I had to find out who did it. Normally I can figure it out quick, but the writing was so good you had to wait for the “big reveal”. Loved it!
Dementia is an awful disease. It is portrayed very kindly in these books. But, it is too close to home for me. The rest of the stories are fantastic!! Great characters solving crimes and finding truths.
Kurt knew the victim on this remote island, Jason MCoy a contractor, and was one to avoid, was murdered. Then his house was torched someone was determinded to get rid of evidence, Forest Ranger Logan returning to Widow’s Island wanted peace after Afghanistan, not more nightmare. Looking and dating Tessa brought him a calmness, his sister’s best friend. For Deputy Tessa, juggling the caring for her Mom.and working. Dating Logan is slow and steady, and liking their time together.
I love how the story flows, one knows they are heading to the victim. The author gives us the feel of the day, the wind, the island, and about them.
Observing, and figuring out the c,lues, and hoping for more with their beginning romance. Between Logan and Tessa, they both need that special someone in their lives. Another winner for us to read and enjoy.
Given an ARC by Net Galley and Montlake for my voluntary review and my honest opinion..
The 3rd novella in the Widow’s Island series is a fast paced, suspenseful murder mystery with a touch of romance. When a body washes up on the shore of Camilla Island, Deputy Tessa Black is once again thrown into investigating another murder. As the list of suspects grows, Tessa has cope with trying to find a killer, care for her teenage half-sister and a mother with developing Alzheimer’s, as well as handling her blooming relationship with Forest Ranger, Logan Wilde. To add to her load, a new clue related to the disappearance of her childhood friend twenty years ago, is unearthed.
This is a great murder mystery with lots of action, subplots, intrigue and a splash of romance. I love how well written these novellas are and how easily the ongoing stories flow between the series writers, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliott. I would recommend reading the first two books in this series (Close to the Bone and A Bone to Pick) in order to understand the characters back story and the ongoing mystery, but it is not really necessary in order for you to follow this story.
Whisper of Bones is a short story in the Widow’s Island series. The majority of the story focuses on the case of the dead contractor. The suspect list seems to be endless and the whodunit comes as no surprise. My only gripe with this book is that very little of the main character’s life is included in the book. It is 2/3 of the through the story before Tessa’s personal life and personality really are introduced much at all. I like to know my main characters much like a close friend, this book lacked some of that for me. It felt like conversing with an acquaintance and not a friend. Overall, the story was interesting but felt condensed to me. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Deputy Tessa Black is called to the scene when a man’s body is found on the shore of Camilla Island. Assisting her is Logan Wilde, Washington State Forest Ranger. Evidence points to a homicide with several possible suspects who agree that the man was a bully and disliked by all. When the victim’s home is searched and then set on fire, Tessa knows they must act fast to find the killer. As her relationship with Logan evolves into more than friendship, she deals with the case, her mother’s increasing dementia issues and raising her teenage half-sister. Logan has his own issues and is coping with the nightmares that plague him from his time in Afghanistan. This is the exciting continuing stories (with author Kendra Elliot) of Tessa and her childhood friend FBI Agent Cate (Logan’s sister) as they continue to look for evidence in to the disappearance, twenty years ago, of their friend Samantha. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Whisper of Bones is Book 3 of the Widow’s Island series. I do recommend reading these stories in order as the background story of Tessa’s missing friend, Samantha, continues to heat up. Ms. Leigh’s stories in this series focus on Tessa and Logan while Ms. Elliott’s stories focus on Cate and Henry. Certainly an interesting and unique collaboration between 2 authors.
This has been a great suspense series with a touch of romance. Love watching the connection between Tessa and Logan even though this is a bit lighter on the romance side of things than I typically prefer.
I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Tessa and Logan next!
Another great book! This is the third book in the Widow Island series. I found it very enjoyable. Detective Tessa and her friend former army ranger Logan are really good together. The plot is very well written and kept my attention throughout. Murder, arson and action makes the book go fast looking forward to reading the next in the series.
I received the ARC of Whiper of Bones from NetGalley and the publisher and this is my fair and honest review.
I haven’t read any other books in the series but I didn’t have any trouble following along with the storyline. This was a very easy and fast read. I enjoyed the characters and I could visualize the story from the authors words. I would certainly recommend this book to others.
This is the third book in the Widows Island series. Tessa Black is a deputy. Logan is a forest ranger together they investigate a murder. The body washes up in upon the shore near there island. The man was not well liked so that brings on more complications. Nobody is to broken up over his death. Not his wife, ex wife, secretary, employees or employers so there are lots of suspects. In the process of investigating Tessa finds a piece of evidence in a long time cold case. This is another great addition to this wonderful series. A suspenseful murder mystery plus a little bit of romance. The writing duo of Leigh and Elliot can’t be beat!
This is a rocking good series! I love that each novella pulls out all the stops! Mystery, murder, romance, life of a single woman (Tessa) who has an aging parent with alzheimer’s and a teenage sister. To top it off she is a Deputy on this small island and in a progressing romance with a Veteran Army ranger fighting ptsd. This is book 3, each can be read as a stand alone, but why deny your self the pleasure of book 1 and 2? Plus there is an ongoing mystery that runs through each book and we make a little progress. Enjoyable, fast reading, novella with a twist and surprise. Thank you Melinda Leigh, Montlake and NetGalley for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own unsolicited.
