“I’m afraid my vagina might turn itself inside out if you try to give it another orgasm so soon.” — Scarlett BodineRaised by her three overbearing brothers, Scarlett is a hell-raising tomboy with a tool belt. A tornado stirring up trouble everywhere she goes. Her favorite pastimes? Drinking any man under the table and two-stepping. But she has zero interest in love. Scarlett’s only being … interest in love. Scarlett’s only being neighborly when she claims her sexy next-door neighbor as her new pet project.
Devlin is a man at rock bottom. Marriage, political career, five-year plan to Washington, D.C. All destroyed with one well-placed jab. The golden boy is now the black sheep relegated to Bootleg Springs, a tiny West Virginia town with two claims to fame: 1. Moonshine and 2. The cold case disappearance of a teen girl.
Devlin just wants to lick his wounds. But Scarlett has other ideas for his tongue… and the rest of him. She’s determined to bring him back to life, even if getting him back on his feet means never seeing him again. But when an old mystery becomes new news, she’ll need his help to survive the scandal.

I love everything about this story—Bootleg Springs, Scarlet, Devlin, a down-on-his-luck hero, a brash, independent heroine…throw it all together and it equals more than five stars!
Bootleggin fun
This book was such a fun read !
I really enjoyed it .
Scarlett is such a great character, she tough , she’s bold and she’s knows what she wants (mostly ) she’s the only Sister in a family Of brother in a small
Town called bootleg . She’s friendly and fun, she bring life to any situation she’s in .
Dev is An aspiring politician who’s on leave while the publicity of his divorce settles down . He’s lost and depressed and needs a serious dose of bootleg and that’s exactly what he gets .
I had fits of laughing at times in this story and really enjoyed the ride of the rest of the story .
The side characters – scarletts brothers are intriguing and interesting as well and them being a close knot family brings in lots of feels. I’m
Looking forward to more of bootleg !!
I think I have read everything she has written. I need another book.
How did it take me so long to pay a visit to Bootleg Springs? My readers who told me I’d enjoy this series were right… I wanted to dive into the lake and spend the weekend partying with the Bodine family. And the chemistry between Scarllett and Devlin was hot, hot, hot! Can’t wait to lose myself in book 2.
Loved every word!!
I read this entire series in a week! What fun world-building, and the mystery aspect had me on my toes to the very end! Loved all the characters (especially June Bug) and already wish I could forget the whole thing and read it all again. I’ll be recommending this series to every one of my friends, forever. LOL. Thanks Lucy and Claire!
Oh my lord, that was an amazing read. It has it all, fun, steam, really friendly neighbors and a mystery to follow through the series. I enjoyed every page and I’m so ready for the second book. The writing is awesome and and the book is unputdownable. You know sometimes, you get bored of the same old story of boy meets girl, they are totally diferent but they fall in love. Trust me this is not the case. There is definitely a boy and a girl (and several family members and friends) but their story is far from boring. The writing helps a lot with that and the characters, oh boy, they bring the fire.
What are you waiting y’all?! Just grab and read!!!
Don’t read this one in the library – they’ll kick you out for laughing too loud.
Love this series A tough gal shows a privilege politician their is more to life then society
and saving face. She has her own set of rules and lives by them. The way the Hero
is brought into the Heroines world is a great read enjoy.
Such a great book and just the beginning of a six book series! Devlin is basically hiding in his grandmothers house in Bootleg Springs his marriage and political career over. Little does he know that Scarlett Bodine has plans to get the life back into Devlin. Throw in a murder mystery and Devlin’s ex wife and the hurdles seem non stop. With some southern hospitality and some loving care Scarlett and Devlin become quite the pair. Love this couple, Love the side characters. Namely her brothers. Such a great place to visit, you may not want to leave!
Book one in the Bootleg Springs series. Full length told in dual POV, can be read, and enjoyed as stand-alone. Each book is about a different Bodine sibling with secondary characters the same throughout the series, there is also a small-town mystery theme that will not be solved until book six. Scarlett is the only girl in the Bodine family, and I loved her! Devlin’s life is falling apart but Scarlett refuses to let him go it alone. Overall, I liked this book, I liked meeting the Bodine family and the small town of Bootleg Springs. Devlin is the perfect book boyfriend!
This was a fantastic first book in the Bootleg Springs Series. Claire Kingsley and Lucy Score’s writing styles compliment each other perfectly. Equally suspenseful, funny, steamy and sweet.
Scarlett Bodine is a ball of fire! Her exuberant and fiery personality is infectious. She is the youngest in the family and at 26 years old and has had a heavy burden on her shoulders, looking after her alcoholic father whom is now deceased. She has unresolved feelings about him and is working through them now that he has passed.
Devlin McAllister is recently separated after being cheated on by his wife. He has escaped to Bootleg Springs visiting his grandmothers home while she is on vacation. He is working at his families law firm and it has always been expected of him that he would run for senator. After his ex wife’s actions it gives him the opportunity to reevaluate his life and his goals and Scarlett may be just what he needs.
Scarlett and Devlin have incredible chemistry. I would have preferred better communication between them to avoid some unnecessary drama but overall they are amazing together.
I’m intrigued by the rest of the Bodine family and look forward to the rest of the books in this series. Plus there is still the unsolved case involving a missing girl from 10 years ago that still needs to be resolved.
I listened to the audio version and loved the narrators. Natalie Duke has the perfect voice for Scarlett. Her southern accent I adored, and Stephen Dexter was the amazing at voicing Devlin. They brought these characters to life with so much passion and humour in their performances.
I’m hooked already on Bootleg Springs and cannot wait to dive into book 2. Scarlett and Devlin had me laughing and loving every bit of their story. I know I will lose sleep and time over this series and I’m looking forward to it.
I adored this book. It was my first Lucy Score book but won’t be my last.
I’d love to give this book like 20 stars. I LOVED LOVED LOVED this and I am now so attached to all the brothers and reading their stories! When I finished this one I immediately went and got the rest of the books in this series and am totally binge reading!!! Seriously Lucy Score, I am getting NOTHING done around my house right now until I finish all of the books! (hahahahaha)
But in all seriousness, if you love a good rom com –BUY LUCY SCORE!! I cannot tell you how much I absolutely adore the way she writes! During all this pandemic and all the other stuff going on in the world–this funny and romantic rom com is PERFECT!!! Devlin is the city lawyer who is down on his luck and at a crossroads with his life and Scarlett is a ball of fire who will light up any room. They match so well together! Plus all the Bodine boys—-HEART MELTING!!!!!!
I was hooked on Whiskey Chaser after reading two pages. Claire Kingsley has a way of writing family oriented, small town romances filled with great characters some of whom are offbeat, kooky, grumpy and downright hilarious. Mix in a bit of suspense and you have the perfect formula for pure reading enjoyment.
Scarlett Bodine is sassy, funny, lighthearted and full of life. A “hell yeah” kinda gal. You can’t help but like her almost immediately. Devlin McCallister is a man who has been groomed since childhood to “do the right thing.” Yet he arrives in Bootleg Springs as a shadow of his confident self because he did the wrong thing. It takes Scarlett’s no nonsense, won’t take no for an answer attitude and nurturing to help Dev finally start to help and return to his normal self. Things get muddy along the way because of an ex-wife, parental expectations and a 12 year old unsolved mystery but love wins out and these two get their HEA.
Small town Romance? Solddddd…
I love the charm of Bootleg Springs. The little town with warm and caring peoples. Scarlett Bodine, this firecracker woman is my animal spirit. Her personalities were too many to be described.. My Handy-Lady! Devlin McAllister.. the hot neighbor! Poor lad had to lick his wound away … No worries.. the magic of WV charm will made everything better.
Whiskey Chaser was the first stories from the Bodine’s family.. I can never stay away from Miss Lucy sense of humours. This smalltown vibe was so heartfelt and will suck you in like no tomorrow. Bootleg Springs held so many magics and love. Scarlett and Devlin love stories were sexy adorable and my cheeks were hurting from too many laughing. The Bodine Brothers will made your heart pitter patter 🙂
Devlin has been sentenced to temporary exile into the small town of Bootleg Springs in rural West Virginia. His punishment for a very public display of anger against the man his soon to be ex-wife thought would get her up the social ladder a little quicker. After meeting his ex, that was a blessing in disguise. She’s just awful!
Devlin believes Bootleg Springs will be quiet. Serene even. He can think and plan in the comfort of his grandmother’s home until it’s safe to return to the capital. Or so he thought. Quite and serene are not two words that will ever be used to describe his neighbor, Scarlett Bodine. I loved her and her brothers on site!
I couldn’t imagine a more fun place to visit in the Lucy Score universe than Benevolence, CO. Little did I know, just a few states over was a town that would rock my reader world right along with Devlin. Bootleg Springs, with it’s pride in moonshine and unsolved mystery, was just waiting to be discovered. With six books already available to absorb, I’m so very glad I did.
Scarlett is just the best. She’s real and unapologetic in her enthusiasm for finding the fun in life. It’s clear early on that Devlin needed Scarlett to mess up his all too planned out existence. And boy does she ever!
I loved their chemistry! It’s off the pages hot and sweet at the same time. There’s so much going on in this first book in the series. The authors did a fantastic job of building the unsolved mystery with clues that not only kept me wondering about what would be revealed in this book but clearly what will be sprinkled in throughout the rest of the series.
Something the authors did that I don’t see often was in the epilogue. The give the reader a glance at the future that includes the completed stories of the future couples that are featured in the rest of the series. Not exactly spoilers because, somebody, not me, might decide not to read the next books. Just a feeling of completion for not only Devlin and Scarlett but that the town as well as the rest of her family will survive what is revealed.
I’ll be returning to Bootleg Springs real soon. Readers who love a good rom-com and a mystery to boot, should join me. Be warned that you might not want to leave. The story and the people will draw you in and make you feel like family.
Scarlett Bodine is a force of nature pure and simple and you are not going to be the same after reading her story or the stories of her brothers. I’ve read about the entire Bootleg Springs series now, and I honestly don’t know if I want to hug Claire Kingsley or smack her. I started with that Bluewater Billionaires series she wrote with all her buddies. It was a gateway drug I tell you! Next I’m lulled into that sweetness that was the Miles Family series —- I have one word for you there —- Cooper. But I digress. Back to the Bodines.
I’m never quite sure what Scarlett is going to do next and neither does Devlin, who bless his heart, is her straight man. Gorgeous straight man, but straight man. Between the moonshine, free-range town chicken, and pepperoni rolls he never had a chance. Let’s add a little mystery, 4 hunky brothers, girlfriends, and a town full of lovable and crazy quirky characters and well —- I did allude to an addiction above.
I haven’t quite finished all this series but it has been a hootenanny of a good time…and in each and every book Scarlett has not let me down with her shenanigans. Yes there have been near peeing accidents from laughing so hard and tears at just the sweetness of some scenes. Sweet like Scarlett’s sweet tea. She is one of those iconic characters that we NEED to see more of in crossover series (hint hint).
I couldn’t put it down and then I couldn’t wait to get into the next one the next one the next one I read the whole series I loved it keep writing plesse
