Iris Holder has no intention of making a new life on Lilac Bay Island. She just needs a little time to work out a come back plan and then she’ll be right back to taking over the real estate world in the big city. Getting fired and losing her home were a setback, sure, but there’s no reason to think she’ll need more than a few weeks to get herself together. After all, Lilac Bay isn’t exactly her … her favorite place. And the feeling is mutual—at least when it comes to her ex, David Jenkins.Getting involved with the quirky islanders is not on her agenda, no matter how many fish fries and drunken book clubs her cousin Posey drags her to. She definitely doesn’t have time to help reopen the family restaurant. And mending fences with David, her first love, is absolutely out of the question—even if that means ignoring the spark that’s growing between them. But the more time Iris spends on Lilac Bay, the harder it is to leave. She’s getting closer with David, getting closer with her family, and suddenly she’s not so sure her old life was as perfect as she always believed it to be. Maybe she’s actually looking for something new, for something more. Maybe she’s looking for love. And maybe that love is right in front of her.

This is a very interesting story of an Island mom having been lured away to be a business powerhorse; but who isn’t happy and returns to island with daughter who is taken away by Dad. That is origins of the conflict as she has left with a broken heart herself and the boy she loved. This is an interesting unravel into the depths of the relationship of the daughter with her dad, former boyfriend, island itself and the family and people who live there. It is a clean(ish) romance. It has some very very funny situations in it along with the strife. It does run long and gets a bit boring at times with details and side events.
I will start off by saying that up until maybe halfway through, Iris bugged the heck out of me. I loved Posey and Mimi Rose and literally everyone else; the island was sweet and sounded like a place I’d love to visit sometime. And heck, even surly David was interesting and easy to warm up to. But Iris was a little hard to like at first, and there was a time or two that I considered putting it down. But oh man, I’m glad I didn’t. I should have known not to judge a book by its cover, and at the risk of spoiling anything, I’ll just say that she’s not as standoffish as she may seem.
The storyline was well organized, and even though there was very little explicit talk of the past, it created a thorough picture of Iris’s previous time on the island. But even more than that, the little world that the author crafted was the show-stealer. Each character was different and memorable, and, besides the initial introductions, I didn’t have a hard time trying to remember who was who. All in all, the story won me over, and I’ll definitely be looking at more stories to bring me back into this beautiful little world that the author has created.
