Cowboys are a different breed…
They work hard, play hard and love harder. It’s all about the ride until the right woman makes them fall.
Cowboy Austin McBride follows a rough stock herd to a new town leaving his firefighting days behind. Being a firefighter-paramedic is his passion, though, so when he hears of an opening at a local station, he applies. Standing between him and the job, … the job, however, is a blonde bombshell who thinks she’s a shoe-in for the position.

What a fantastic book! I loved every page of this well written romantic novella. An absolute must read over a relaxing long lunch!
“Where There’s Smoke” (A Cowboy Way Novella) by Becky McGraw is a fantastic read. This story is hilarious, smoking hot, and emotional. Not to mention the hot cowboys and firefighters! I loved getting to know Austin and Sunny. This is a great addition to the Cowboy Way series. Looking forward to seeing what happens next in one of my favorite series. Highly recommend to all fans of hot cowboys, firefighters, and romance.
Cowboys are a different breed, but then so are firefighters and paramedics. They all work hard, play hard and love even harder.
Austin McBride is a cowboy and new in town after he left his firefighting days behind, now he is a cowboy, but not as happy as he used to be. When he finds out there is an opening at the local Station he applies, but there is one tiny issue, there is a blond bombshell who wants the job.
Watching them interact is down right funny, to the point that I was laughing really hard, he likes her she wants the job, but is she fit to become the Chief or will Austin help her get it, one has to win and for you to find out, well partner just read the story, its fast paced and funny.
Being a huge fan of Ms. McGraw’s Deep Six Security series, I was not surprised at all that I enjoyed this book. Though it is cowboys instead of military men the story contains the same level of excitement, fun banter, amazing chemistry, riveting plotline as well as a heavier element to the story, aside from the standard cowboy sees girl, wants girl and does whatever to get her. There are strong emotions running through the pages of this book as Sunny and Austin try to find their footing with each other and each deciding what will be best for their own future…what they truly want individually on a personal and professional level that will make them happy and satisfied. Where There’s Smoke is the 6th book in the Cowboy Way series and can easily stand alone. This is the first I have read from this series and I had no trouble following along with the characters or storyline. I enjoyed Austin’s character right from the start. He definitely has an alpha personality – take charge and get things done, a true leader – but he is also fun and laid back and sees fit to enjoy life. Sunny, however, is a different story. I struggled a bit with her in the beginning because she has such an abrasive attitude towards everyone, even her family. She does not have that sweet, girl-next-door disposition. Due to some experiences in her youth, she has a huge chip on her shoulder and bitter outlook and is wound too tight. She does not know how to relax and enjoy life; instead it seems as if everyone and everything are out to get her. With that being said, I did warm up to her after learning more of her backstory. Once she loosened up a bit and understood Austin’s intentions, I enjoyed seeing them as a team. This was truly a great story with wonderful characters and dialogue. I will definitely be looking into the other books from this series. *I voluntarily read/reviewed an ARC of this book.
Learning to let go and find the courage to be better – together
Two people that are at loggerheads from the moment they meet, is going to provide plenty of angst, sparks, and reading entertainment.
Both Sunny and Austin are at points in their lives where changes are needed to fulfill aspirations to improve their family and personal lives, yet also doing what they love. It finds them challenges also. Against each other!!
Sunny’s exterior screams hot headed and sassy attitude with a penchant for disliking the male species. Underneath the easy to take offense attitude is a vulnerable woman who has been exposed to plenty of hurts, in addition to working in a male dominated field where that has not always worked in her favour.
Austin is that man who while he can be stubborn and wanting to find his own way to what brings him happiness… is that man who will listen and be patient and guide, even when he disagrees with this lady he’s drawn too.
Amidst the attraction and sexual chemistry, Becky McGraw delivers a fast paced, angsty story with some hilarious moments, stubborn, witty dialogue, where you just might want to start shaking some sense into Sunny to get with the program! – you will find yourself on a page turning, reading adventure. A great weekend read
For those that love a man who is not only a cowboy but a fire fighter/paramedic, who cares about others, you will definitely want to find yourself in Sunny’s shoes. It’s learning to let go of past hurts and the courage to reinvent yourself that brings you happiness and self worth and a cowboy that is so much more than you ever thought possible!
ARC for honest review with no compensation 4.5 stars
Where There’s Smoke is book 6 in the Cowboy Way series by Becky McGraw and as always it’s another well written, short novella, funny, sexy book with a strong confident cowboy/firefighter/paramedic who has been working on a ranch but really misses being a firefighter/paramedic and a beautiful, strong woman who thinks she wants to be the Chief at the fire station but after a tornado blows through she realizes maybe this is not what her life goals are. Austin and Sunny butt heads from the onset of this book and makes you turn the pages to find out what happens next between these two…will they find their HEA??
Received this book for a honest review. This book is about a firefighter/paramedica/stock foreman. He left his hometown to make more money. He runs into Sunny, a hellion to be sure with a son. This book wasn’t too bad but it was just boring to me.
I have only read a handful of books by this talented author, all of them either about security or military men. So I was curious about this one since it focuses on cowboys.
As expected, Ms. McGraw gives us a thoughtful , well developed plot and characters that are imperfect and real .
The main characters, Sunny and Austin might not have been my favorite, but the storyline about a woman trying to make it in a man’s world as a firefighter, while dealing with her own insecurities , was one that is happening every day in our society. Austin was a good opposite for Sunny, since he helps her see her own weakness and strengths , while helping her become a better person, mother and leader.
All in all , an entertaining story.
