A loving threesome, they ranged the dark hills and river bottoms of Cherokee country. Old Dan had the brawn. Little Ann had the brains, and Billy had the will to make them into the finest hunting team in the valley. Glory and victory were coming to them, but sadness waited too. Where the Red Fern Grows is an exciting tale of love and adventure you’ll never forget.
“From the Paperback edition.”
This was required reading when I was in elementary school and I hope it still is for others. This book follows a kid named Billy who wants to own 2 hunting hounds and does odd jobs in order to earn up the money to buy them. He trains them and they become the top hunting dogs in the area and he is able to bring an income in for his family. It has …
i loved it i did cry after the book i suggest you watch the movie but i thought these books were free?
I read this book as a child, and it has always stuck with me. Just something so pure about a boy and his dogs! I still read this book every so often as an adult to get perspective on life, and how the little things are the most important.
I’m 45 year old woman and this book gets me every time. I have read it so many times that I was forced to buy a new copy. For me Wilson Rawls wrote the book so beautifully that I can picture the scenery, characters and the narrator’s voice. It felt like Sam Shepard was reading the book to me. Best book ever!
This Book is the best!!!
I loved how he saved up to buy his dogs. Then he trained them and hunted with them. Little Ann and big Dan were a pair of good cook dogs. Its a a very heartfelt story I cry every time I read it
Read with students
I like it was very interesting
I cried (I knew I would), the kids cried too (even hours later)! Such a heartwarming story about a boy and his dogs and the everything they will go through for each other. I haven’t cried that hard in so long! Wilson Rawls really knows how to get a hold of your emotions and take them for a ride. I will need about 5 years of recovery time for my …
page turner
One of my favorite children’s books. Especially good writing from an Oklahoma author.
I read this with my students several times and loved the story and writing each time. A wonderful read with so many good messages.
A classic read.
I don’t know why my mom made me read this, because we read it together and we both cried so hard. The main character is a poor boy who trains dogs to hunt. They are really good at it, too, and the boy enters a contest with is pa and grandpa. It is hard and man, I don’t like dog books. I mean, why? I don’t want to spoil it or anything, but this …
Read this the first time in third grade, and it taught me that even great stories can be sad. First time I cried over reading a book. I have never owned a dog, but this book led to me reading Big Red and the rest of those series of dog-centered books. The characters are real, living in a very difficult situation that helped me appreciate my own …
This is the book that cultivated my love for animals at an early age. It is the one book I can read multiple times but never tire of. It takes the reader to a long-forgotten time and way of life that simply must be experienced.
It asked me what mmy favorite book was, “where the red fern grows”, i read it multiple times. read if you never did, its a genuinely good book.
It was one of the first books I ever read as a kid, It had a hand in inspiring my love for reading and becoming a writer myself.
Good
Read this as a teen and it’s still a wonderful book.
