“This sensational small town crime thriller is a perfect beach read.” –Best ThrillersIt’s an unseasonably hot April night in 1965. The social revolutions rocking America have mostly bypassed Burr, a tiny rural community in western Oklahoma. Like much of the state, Burr remains as it’s always been: Religious. Conservative. And 100% white. When an unknown young African-American woman is found … 100% white. When an unknown young African-American woman is found murdered on the railroad tracks outside town, most of Burr would rather look the other way. The town’s police chief, troubled local hero and ex-Marine Emmett Hardy, doesn’t have that luxury. A lover of books and jazz in the land of football and country & western, Emmett is an outsider in a place he knows like the back of his hand. In his search for the killer, he’s forced to slice through layers of hate and hypocrisy to confront the ethical rot at the town’s core, while being haunted by the vision of a life and love that might have been.

Found it difficult to put the book down; wondered what would happen next! Always nice when the book is interesting from the first page.
Good story, good characters, believable and realistic characters, realistic setting, easy to read,
Slow at the beginning, but after a couple chapters it really gets going
Easy read. Holds your interest. Since I had lived in Texas and am familiar with Oklahoma the story seemed plausible.
i enjoyed this book. Its characters and storyline were well-developed.
Reminded me of my youth in Arkansas.
I loved the down home, western comparisons. I even wrote a list of them down. My favourite is; “He was as crooked as a bucket of chicken wings”.
Ab-so-lute-ly !!
It left me begging for more AND with thoughts that this would make a great TV series, say on AMC or ______ channel
Surprising good. Set in the early 1960’s, small town Oklahoma. A good reminder of race relations were like.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
I read the first couple chapters and didn’t think I wanted to finish reading. Just didn’t think it was the type of book I was interested in. So glad I kept reading. It was a fantastic book that I couldn’t put down. Very good story.
Meh
Very enjoyable!
Good story. The characters were easy to love it hate or cheer on. The author did great leading the reader on!!!
Ok
A good read.
Best book I’ve read in awhile. Real characters like you’d find at Walmart or church.
I’d like to read more of his books.
Bad language is a turn off
So accurate and gives a real picture of why the Afghan situation is hopeless.
Loved the story and time period.
