I didn’t want this story to end!”–Reese Witherspoon“Painfully beautiful.”–The New York Times Book ReviewFor years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet … years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Beautiful writing. Haunting. Hard to find another book even nearly as good.
This book, in my opinion, is the best book of the year! It’s one of those books “you just can’t put down,” and keeps you enthralled until the very end and then still manages to surprise! Awesome writing and a tremendous read!
This was one of the best books I have ever read. Actually I listened to it on Audible and the reader was fabulous.
Where the Crawdads Sing is an exquisitely written, heart-wrenching story about Kya, the Marsh Girl, who was abandoned by her entire family to survive in the North Carolina wilderness when she was only a child. Despite the isolation and abandonment she grows up to become a remarkable woman who finds solace in the marsh and the creatures that inhabit it. This a survival story, a love story, and a murder mystery masterfully woven together to create an unforgettable an unique novel. No wonder the book was chosen for Reese Witherspoon’s book club.
A favorite for 2018. Lyrical, haunting, beautiful way with words and descriptions. I will look forward to more from Delia Owens.
could not put it down, interesting till the end best book i read this year
For a first time novel this is a beautifully written book, and I didn’t want to put it down!!! For me it was a wonderfully told tale. Great well developed characters and a surreal setting. Don’t miss this one!
This is a compelling book . You become invested in the characters well being and the story.
This is my favorite book of 2018 so far. It is a book about so many things: survival, abandonment, loneliness, solitude, nature, abuse, friendship, love. I read it a few weeks ago and I still can’t get Kya out of my mind. PLEASE read this book!
Wonderful characters. Beautifully written. Stays with you and a surprise ending. Tragic, unbelievable beginning. Peaceful, appropriate ending. Great read.
I couldn’t put it!
I’m not typically a fan of magical realism but this was beautifully written and an interesting story.
Could not put it down!!!!!
May be the best book I have ever read, and I read a lot! Almost a nature study of water fowl and fauna in N. Carolina. Sounds boring, but trust me, this book moves right along and has a surprise ending
I loved how it never got boring in places. Soul wrenching.
I loved this book. I found it on Reese Witherspoon’s book club list as I’ve found a lot of books I like on her list. It was a book you can’t put down. Makes you look at another side of life and how someone in bad circumstances can overcome them,
Amazing descriptions of the marsh…the animals, birds, water, and people. I especially love the tenderness Jumpin has with Kya. Beautifully written.
This is a beautifully written debut novel by Delia Owens. I have never been in a marsh, but felt the beauty and magic of the special place that Kya Clark lived. Her description of the marsh and the creatures that lived there, as well as the loneliness, abandonment, and isolation of this child, are as clear as photos.
Owens’ characters are interesting and complex, as they develop over years. We’re given the story in the distant past and the present. I thought I knew where the story was going, but was very surprised that I kind of missed the direction.
This will be among my favorite reads this year, I think it will be yours as well. I thank Delia Owens and Goodreads and Penguin Random House for the ARC, for my honest review.
Such a delightful book! Not often do I come across a book that enjoy thoroughly from beginning to end.
A must read. Wonderfully written.
