I didn’t want this story to end!”–Reese Witherspoon“Painfully beautiful.”–The New York Times Book ReviewFor years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet … years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

What happens when you’re 9 years old, and your family just leaves you behind. Kya learns to live and grow up knowing that she can
only depend on herself.
I have read Delia Owens’ Africa books and was delighted to find this novel. The characters are developed, the writing is captivating, and the subject riveting.
Beautifully written!
Lilting cadence, lyrical, well woven. The characters are real and rich and the story is rich in cultural and environmental background. Everyone in our book group responded favorably.
Completely unexpected. This woman can write! And the story she tells is one of deep understanding of a little known culture in the US, immersed in the beauty and dangers of nature, and of the human spirit.
Beautifully written!
I read this book never expecting the way the main character would haunt me. I do not want to give away anything in the review, but I think you will truly enjoy this book. If you are familiar with the coastal waters of the the south the descriptions are right on. You will not be disappointed.
Would highly recommend this book. Follows the life of a young poor girl, showing true grit and determination… making something of herself against all odds. Truly astonishing ending!
really enjoyed this all the way through. the ending was just eh but the book on the whole was enjoyable
This story of a young girl abandoned by her family in the swampy coastland of North Carolina is absolutely unforgettable and has provided me with one of the best reads I’ve had in a long time. Think of this as “Girl of the Limberlost meets Gone Girl.” Not to be missed!
This was an excellent book about a young girl abandoned by her family at the age of 7 in the marsh land of Louisiana. She took care of herself all her life and was ostracized by the residents of the neighboring town. It is one of the best books I have ever read.
Pat Conroy was a favorite of mine. This is the first book that I have read since reading Conroy where the words wrapped around me and evoked that essence of the Southern coast and its people. The characters and situations seemed so real.
The writing is exceptionally beautiful and the story is well-developed. The author’s understanding of the environment added a depth of understanding to the story line.
Great writing. Wonderful story.
The language in this book is beautiful. Literally paints pictures with the words. Intriguing in out the story is delivered and the end was as good as the first beautiful paragraph
Loved this book. You will need to talk to someone who also read the book when you finish.
Enjoyed this book a lot. Surprised at end which I like. Read in 3 days!
Such thoughtful writing. Loved it!

With Nate’s friendship, she learns to read, then on her own she studies the marsh environment from library books and life. The mystery of a murder adds another level to the fascinating marsh girl’s existence.
