I didn’t want this story to end!”–Reese Witherspoon“Painfully beautiful.”–The New York Times Book ReviewFor years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet … years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

I loved it so much in buying it as a gift!! It was the best book I’ve read in a while! I highly recommend readythis!
Everyone should read this book
What can anyone add to the over 12,000 reviews already posted on Amazon about the amazing book. Just read it! It is fabulous. Cheers Lynda L. Lock (Isla Mujeres Mystery series.)
One of the few books I will keep.! Loved this book.! Every one should read it!
This is a magnificent book. The plot and characters are unique, fresh, and authentic. The setting of the low country in NC was glorious and reminiscent of the best of Barbara Kingsolver. Ms. Owens’ grasp of the land and the people and the time portrayed are authentic because she lived there many years ago, and it shows in her descriptions and story-telling. The story deals with stereotypes, prejudice, life in the coastal marshlands of NC, domestic abuse, and the glory of nature and how Kya, the young girl also called ‘the marsh girl,’ learns and grows through her immersion and love of it without any public schooling. Nature is her only family. Combined with some romance and a murder mystery, this is a must-read for anyone looking for authenticity, gorgeous writing and a look into another time, era and place– the kind disappearing from today’s world.
A lyrical, haunting tale of a girl abandoned by her family, left to find her own way through life in the marshy wilderness of North Carolina. A beautiful setting for a beautiful story.
While reading I could hear, feel and almost smell the surroundings as I read about them. You become very attached to the main character and feel justice for her on the final pages. Great read!
There’s a reason this book has been on the best seller list for awhile: it’s a well-written yarn that is also a murder mystery. Owens’ descriptions of nature are evocative and lyrical, and she brings the small southern ‘town’ to life. It’s a book you will gobble up in a few days and remember for a few years.
This is a top book with an original story and characters I really cared about.
I’d been on a reading dry spell for some time before picking up Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens recently. After hearing so many wonderful things about the book, it would be my first read as I jumped back into novel reading.
The story was amazing. But what blew me away about it was how quiet the story was and how nature lived and breathed within the pages. Ms. Owens is a bestselling non-fiction author and a wildlife scientist. In Crawdads, she applies her extensive knowledge of flora and fauna within the setting and creates a rich canvas where Kya, the heroine lives completely alone most of her life. But even when she’s alone, she’s not. There are the birds she feeds, the insects and feathers she collects lovingly, the marsh. Constant sounds and activities of life surround her. They are her family. She can count on the tide to come in and recede every single day. It never lets her down, not like the people who were supposed to love and care for her but didn’t.
I’m thrilled for Ms. Owens’ success as this is her first novel. Well done!!
A must read!!
A page-turner murder mystery as well as a coming-of-age romance that to me was a combination of Educated and Island of the Blue Dolphins – one my all-time favorite books from my childhood. Other than a few scenes, this book could cross over into YA. What set this stunningly apart was the gorgeous nature writing. The lush prose engulfs the reader in Kya’s world of the marsh, the sea and with the birds. It’s some of the loveliest nature writing that recalls Peter Matthiessen which says a lot. Delia Owens, a professional nature writer, engages us in the beauty and the science. Kya is a protagonist we can route for even if at times we are asked to suspend belief. This is a story of strength and perseverance. Love and forgiveness, as well as survival and cruelty. I recommend it – a perfect summer read.
I loved reading this book. When I was reading the book, I did not want to put it down.
I absolutely love this book! I couldn’t put it down & didn’t want it to end! One of new favorites!
It was the best book. I fell in love with the characters
5* Beautifully Wild Swamp Girl Stars
This is a beautifully well-written story and the way the author describes the coastal marshes and its inhabitants is truly masterful.
The characters in the book are very engaging. I adored Kya the moment we were introduced to her. Her resilience and determination to endure what was delivered to her from an early age was paramount to her survival.
The story will take you on an incredible journey of survival, murder mystery, love, and heartbreak.
This is my best read so far for 2019 and I would highly recommend this magnificent read. I would love to see this book made into a film
One of the best books I ‘ve read and I read a lot. To think this was the authors first book. Want more.
WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING has romance, suspense, and some pages that reminded me of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. But, mostly, this is a heartfelt paean to the author’s love of nature–for the lucky reader.
Delia Owens has written a beautiful story, told with poetic sensitivity that is just right, never overdone. Kya, her protagonist, is wonderful and more of a cloistered nun whose monastery is the sea and marshland of Eastern North Carolina. It’s no wonder the book is a national number-one bestseller. I want so much to give this sensitive novel 5 stars, but I can’t. The final 30-40 pages leave so much to be desired, covering as they do 30-35 years in “this happened then that happened” fashion. Owens ends her story so abruptly that the zinger at the end loses its power, leaving this reader sadly deflated rather than gratefully elated.
Everyone is recommending this… because it’s a completely engaging read with a unique narrative voice. Have fun!
Best book I’ve read in ages! The author creates characters who truly come alive on the page, and her settings are remarkable! The descriptions of the marshes and sea shore and all the creatures who live there truly do sing with realism and create images so vivid I felt I was there. “Crawdads” is a MUST READ!
