So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

A classic!
This bestseller focused on a woman abandoned by everyone–her family then her first love. Her home is in the marshlands of North Carolina. This first time author of fiction sets a scene that makes you feel for this isolated girl who becomes a woman all alone. Her strength is what you have to admire. When she is accused of murder, you wonder how she can possibly survive it. It’s a page turner.
This book gave me all the feels. It was heart wrenching, suspenseful and surprising. I love loved it!
Entertaining and educational; learned so much. Very descriptive writing
Did not like this book as much as I was hoping too. I liked it somewhat but it wasn’t what I was expecting.
An absolutely mesmerizing novel. I was completely captivated with the beautiful writing by Delia, I truly felt like I was in the marsh myself, seeing everything she wrote about, learning so many interesting things, and loving every second. My heart broke, and my heart mended and then it broke again, and I am so grateful to have gone on this journey with the Marsh Girl! And last, female insects rock!!! Should have taken notes from them years ago, HA!
This book was a gift to readers!
What a good book! I really enjoyed it. I couldn’t wait to finish but I also didn’t want it to end.
The book took place in the North Carolina marshes. Kya was left alone to fend for herself. Everyone knew her as the Marsh Girl. Kya did the best that she could with no education and she survived by her wits.
Well written with wonderful characters.
This is one book I’ll never forget! You fall into Kia’s world and become one with her. The ending is beyond description.
Great book and will make a terrific movie!
Beautiful book like no other. Uses nature to examine the soul of protagonist. Read aloud to husband to and from FL. A favorite of both of us.
Good Book would recommend reading it
this is one of those books that you don’t want to end. I fell in love with Kya and Jumpin, but all of the characters are memorable.
As other viewers said, this book is a hard one to put down. After the first 10 pages or so, I was hooked. It’s not my typical read, but I really enjoyed it. The story involves a young woman, abandoned by her family (each of which has some serious mental health issues) at a very young age. It’s a story of how the spirit survives. While there are a number of challenges, the heroine, known to others as the “Marsh Girl,” meets them, and she also meets some kind strangers, such as a boy her age who teaches her to read (Tate) and an African American family who are kind to her, even though their circumstances are also precarious. When the man who becomes her lover dies under questionable circumstances, the Marsh Girl is tried for his murder (reminiscent of To Kill A Mockingbird). As some of the reviews point out the story is a bot of a stretch — a girl with no formal education achieving fame and career — but I did not find myself as hung up on those details as other reviewers. I’d recommend this book if you want something different.
Fascinating book!
One of the best books I’ve ever read! Excellent writing and character development!
Absolutely beautiful.
Everyone needs to read this book – it has everything. A coming of age tale, a story of love and also a murder mystery – all combine to make this a totally captivating page turner of a read. The book takes you on a journey through the life of Kya, left to fend for herself in the marshlands of North Carolina. Every character was so beautifully drawn and the landscapes of the marsh were so vivid, I was totally lost in the world that the author created. I read this book in two days, I was so gripped by the story. A wonderful novel.
The best book EVER!
