So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

I absolutely love this story and will never forget it! Kya, the main character is phenomenal and what she had to endure was truly tragic!!! However; her curiosity, memory and wanting to learn is how she prevailed in life. All the other characters were really well created and personal. This is a story to will stick with you years from now.
This is a very good read! Perfect for Book Clubs!
Highly recommend. So well written , it’s a book you’ll want to own and re-read.
There are no words to describe how much I love this book! It was fantastic!
This is one of the best books I have ever read. You cannot put it down when you start reading.
A combination of coming-of-age with mystery, murder and a love of nature. Evocative, haunting, and original.
Wow, what an awesome novel. This is a first time read/listen by Delia Owens and she is an author on my fan list. This story was well written, flowed seamlessly and the plot was great. It held me completely and the narration was at its best.
The story is about Kya, a girl who grew to a woman that lived in the marshes of the small town of Barley Cove on the North Carolina coast. When the handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, all eyes are on may Clark, the Marsh Girl as they call her. She has survived in the marsh she calls her home since being abandoned by her family and others she loved. She knows no other way to live except depend solely on her own to get by. When she becomes the attraction of two young men the unthinkable happens…she is charged with murder of the son of the town’s well to do family. No one understanding her but a few, she is pushed into the limelight of a world she has tried to stay hidden from all of her life.
This is a must read novel that tugs at your heart. A nice coming of age story of a shy girl who has a secret until the very end. Ms. Owens has written a wonderful story. Narration by Cassandra Campbell was exceptional.
Loved the book. Very heart warming.
Good beach book. Great characters.
I don’t understand all they hype for this book. I enjoyed the characters, but feel the storyline is weak. I had a hard time getting through it because it really didn’t grab my attention. I read through almost half the book before I thought it started to get a little interesting.
WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING is exactly as beautiful as everyone has said it is, and it has introduced me to one of my new favorite characters. Kya Clark, known as “the marsh girl” around her coastal North Carolina town, has lived alone since she was seven years old, when her father, the last of her family members, left her. For years, she lives in isolation in the shack she once shared with her parents and siblings, all of whom abruptly left home, one by one. Her life in the marsh is gorgeous but excruciatingly lonely, and as she learns to survive without money or a formal education, she also finds friendship, love, and connection in unexpected places, even as she struggles to protect her home and her heart. But when Kya is 22, a local man is found dead, possibly murdered, and because of the town’s prejudices against “the marsh girl,” Kya becomes the prime suspect. The book weaves back and forth between the murder case and Kya’s life growing up in the marsh, making it is at once a stunning Bildungsroman and a compelling whodunnit. Delia Owens’ prose is exquisite; there were so many lines I had to stop and read again because of how beautifully and succinctly they expressed life’s truths. Kya’s loneliness is achingly palpable throughout the book, but so is her strength and resilience, her wild spirit and tender heart. And the ending! OMG, that incredible, unforgettable ending. I did not see it coming at all, but it makes perfect poetic sense for the story, and I’m grateful to Owens for taking that risk, for leaving us on a note that both complicates and enriches the novel’s themes and characters. All in all, I loved this extraordinary novel.
Loved this book so much! Her writing style was excellent and this book left me wanting to discuss it with friends and feeling mixed emotions of smiling with tears in my eyes as well as surprised at the ending. Heart-breaking in the beginning. It had a little bit of everything in it. One of my favorite books I read all year!
After reading this I recommended it to my book club. Everyone loved it. The writing is beautiful. The story is outstanding. This is one of my favorite books this year.
I think this has become one of my all time favorite books. It had everything that makes a book great. Love, hardship, great characters and a murder. The ending was a huge surprise. I loved every minute of this book. I highly recommend it.
It has been a long time since I’ve read a fiction that is this good. Probably should be classified as historical fiction.
Wonderful book!! Couldn’t wait to see what happened next. I actually slowed up my reading towards the end because I didn’t want it to end.
Loved it. Great characters who seemed realistic. The NC marsh setting was haunting and had a life of its own. One of the best books I’ve ever read.
