So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

held my interest the entire book; felt empathy with main character and yet admired her survival skills and intelligence.
Hated to put it down
I loved this book and the characters. The last 3 pages are a total shock. Don’t read ahead or you’ll ruin the story.
I enjoyed how the author integrated the natural world into this novel. I felt like I was on the boat, in the woods, and at the beach. Interesting premise demonstrating a deep inner strength of the main character.
I felt like I was in the marsh. Wonderful story.
The story was both tragic and surprising.
It was enjoyable. Bit slow and disjointed at times.
Gentle and beautiful coming of age story set on a barrier island off the coast of North Carolina. References to both nature and human nature were intertwined in a gentle spirit.
Beautifully written!
As a natural history/nature buff I loved the detailed description of the natural world. Filled with memorable, complex characters to love and hate. Tricky, unexpected ending.!
This is one of the most amazing books I’ve ever read, and I’m an English teacher. I loved it and could hardly put it down!
It was poetry written in prose. I could not put it down. So sad that the town could not embrace this girl and make her one of theirs, but then we wouldn’t have the wonderful story that it was.
Not as good as the hype. Felt heartbroken for many chapters.
This was a phenomenal book. Rich setting, three-dimensional characters, and the tear-jerking life of Kya, the Marsh Girl, made this an “un-put-downable” book. This book is in my Top 5 of all-time.
This is one of my all-time favorite books. Read it!
Loved the nature described by the Author. Story was so sad at times I had to put it down.
Beautifully written. Has a surprise ending. On the down side, it seems too hard to believe that a child could survive alone in the marsh.
I loved everything about this book! And whenever anyone asks me for the names of some of my favorite books, this one is very close to the top of my list! I listened to the audio version, and found myself thinking about the characters (especially the main character) often, even when I wasn’t listening to the story, as if they were real people.
I didn’t care for it. I’ll let it go at that.
This is a quick, but totally engaging book. The characters are so well written that’s is impossible to put down.
