So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Loved it
I loved it.
This is the best book I have read all year.
One of my all time favorites!
Could have been so much better. Great story idea that just didn’t live up to all the hype.
Natural innocence
Fantastic story of a little girl making a big difference in her world as she struggles to grow up alone in the marshes. Her love and closeness to her environment and yearnings to be accepted play out well in this page turning book. NOTE: have a box of tissues close by, chances are you’ll need them.
Oh, what a book. Beautifully written, with a setting and characters that sucked me in from the start. The wonderful descriptions of fictitious Barkley Cove on the North Carolina coast added richness to the story. There’s a murder mystery, too, but it isn’t graphic. I had a bit of a problem with the way it ended, which I won’t share because I don’t want to spoil the mystery, but overall, I really enjoyed the story.
Loved how there was a twist at the end. Shocking. Very much kept me interested.
Excellent book until the very end. Should have left it off.
The story was great but the ending was very anti-climatic. Don’t know what all the fuss was about this book.
A beautiful written book. I was torn between stopping to reread a passage and galloping on to see where the story leads. Her description of swamp life is so accurate and her attention to details about her surroundings was delightful. It was a mystery up until the very end
Absolutely beautiful writing. Accept the story and go on an adventure through the marshland of North Carolina. The plot unfolds slowly but the reader becomes enthralled with the language of the writer.
Every bit as wonderful as the hype. Gorgeous prose and sense of place swept me away.
Very different subject. Very well written. Page turner to the end.
I really liked the story. The writing was too descriptive. I don’t care what the characters are eating unless it’s relevant to the story. The author really has a thing for grits.
Loved this book!
Best book I have ever read!
