I didn’t want this story to end!”–Reese Witherspoon“Painfully beautiful.”–The New York Times Book ReviewFor years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet … years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

My favorite
This book had everything you want in a book, a sweet love story, a mystery, a main character you fell in love with. I was impressed with how even in 3rd person you felt close to the characters. The author painted an amazing picture of Kya’s environment and resilience.
I thought the copy editors could have done a much better job. Very bad grammar and misuse of words. Good luck to the author on her next book. Some of the sentence structures were just not up to good grammar. Thank you.
That was a spectacular story! It’s one of those stories that is so engrossing that you either can’t put down or try your hardest to get back to at any chance possible. It’s the sad tale of every outcast in society, of prejudices we have, of labeling, of exclusion, of loneliness, of desperation, of love and the need for acceptance. This is one we all need to read.
I listened on audio book and the narrator was marvelous as well. I was not expecting the ending and it kept me guessing from the beginning. If anything, my hope would be that people read this and change how we treat others. It is sad that we have prejudices as humans – that means EVERYBODY has prejudices – but we should all have a reminder like this to help us to strive to be better people. Maybe one day…..
Good book. I enjoyed reading it,
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this book! I would love to see this as a movie. This is possibly one of my favorite books that I have ever read.
One of the best books I read this year!! Loved it
LOVED WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. Heard it on Audible. Better to listen to this story as you get all of the accents that add greatly to the whole of the characters. You miss a lot reading this book instead of listening. Hard to put down.
Such a wonderfully tragic story. I loved every minute.
J just the intimate detail and the deep southern ways reminded me of home so me,I’m from the beaches of North Carolina…..send the book really touched me emotionally! Great great book!!!!
This is the best book I have read this year. I never wanted it to end. The prose is spectacular. Every sentence evokes beautiful imagery. The characters are beautifully developed. The story is original. Kya is a marsh girl who raises herself alone from the age of six. Her life is both complex and simple, a mystery told through the lense of many different forms of love. The writing is Pulitzer quality.
Could not put it down. My Summer read…believable characters and great story
I only give 5 stars to books that are among the best I’ve ever read and Where the Crawdads Sing definitely deserves this high praise. Delia Owens is a genius. Often, books rich in description go too far, easily losing the reader who may skip pages to get to the good parts. But Owens’ protagonist discovers nature and we’re drawn into her discoveries though brilliant descriptions that educate and enthrall.
If I had a criticism about the book, it might be that the ending was a bit predictable. However, the richness of the experience more than makes up for any minor shortcomings on that front. I highly recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed!
Absolutely beautiful, I couldn’t put it down.
I’ve never read a book like this one. The character development is extraordinary and the setting is the most unlikely yet fascinating place. It is simply a story I could read over and over again. Please, do yourself a favor and read this book.
Loved the way she breathed life into the outer banks.
Geography was wrong, but great read.
What a great read! Lots of food for discussion!
So well written. Beautifully descriptive and interesting characters. This brought tears, but kept me riveted.
Implausible.
