I didn’t want this story to end!”–Reese Witherspoon“Painfully beautiful.”–The New York Times Book ReviewFor years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet … years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

One of the most fascinating books I’ve read in a long time.
“A nature-immersed mystery and love story with an ending that you’ll never guess, and never, ever forget.”
-Delia Owens, movie poster tagline
^ This says it all about the book. Its a great reading. Honestly, if it is made into a film, I would watch it. I’ve learned a bit about nature and the N.C. Marsh. Kya is such a strong and beautiful female character who was abandoned at such a young age by her family and even the community, except for Jumpin’ and his wife, who themselves are also outcasts. Oh and Tate who is what a man should be, in my opinion.
This book is one I picked up due to it being in North Carolina. It was a great descriptive book, but I think that it was a little dragged out. Just my personal thought.
One of the best books I have ever read. Got the real book and will definitely read this book again
Superb novel with an inspiring young female protagonist.
This is a debut novel by a scientist known for her nature writing. Her prose is poetic and beautiful and the insights into the workings of nature are informative and moving. The plot had me hooked from the start.
Highly over rated.
Enchanting! One of the best books I have read. Unusual plot which includes a mystery and an incredible surprise at the end. The setting is an important character and drew me to the southern coastline. Highly recommended!
This book has been hyped but it delivers. Such a compelling protagonist. I guessed the ending right away but still delighted in traveling the life story of this strong, independent woman.
A captivating debut full of lush imagery and an enthralling story.
As good as everyone says it is: lyrical language, intriguing setting, a well-plotted murder mystery, A story of resilience despite abandonment and deep loneliness.
This was a fantastic read and kept me guessing until the very end. This book is also proof that the most beautiful prose is written with simple but evocative words. Highly recommended.
I loved this book…
This was not a genre I normally read but because it was on the best seller list for so long, I thought it must be good. It was excellent and a story that stays with you
Gtear read, I love the main girl in the book. I think someone will try to make a movie from it.
Touching read. One of my favorites. Drew me in.
Reminded me of The Girl of the Limberlost written in the early 1900’s which I would also recommend
Well written with a surprise ending.
I fell hard for Kya the swamp girl. Very hard. Delia’s writing is so real and raw that I felt that Kya was my best friend and I wanted to protect her from what you feel in your bones will not be a happy ending. Truly exceptional, southern storytelling.
Read this for a book club, then recommended it to another book club. Everyone thanked me for recommending it. It is excellent.
