So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

I loved the view I had into a Southern culture and community I previously knew little about.
Loved it!
A friend of mine told me to make sure I read this book and I’m glad she did. She told me that it was a little bit different in writing but that if I stuck with it it would all make perfectly good sense. The best way to describe it is that I enjoyed it and was not prepared for the last quarter of the book that had me using at least 10 kleenexs. It was a complete twist at the end And I said in astonishment reading the last page. You will enjoy this book it’s understandable why it’s still on the bestseller list.
Loved this book! The writing was poetic and beautiful and the ending was surprising.
Probably most popular book this year! Wonderful description of an dependent, strong girl to woman. Reader cheers for her through out the book. Shocking end but one you will cheer for! Have to read it again soon! Love it.
Read twice – beautifully written – one of my favorite books ever
I think Delia Owens has a rare voice that so encompasses the marsh and the mysterious setting of the book that it lures you in just as much as the plot. When voice, character building, a beautiful setting, and excellent writing come together a masterpiece is made – and this is one of them. Kudos to Owens for writing such a beautiful and unique novel!
This book has stayed with me for months. I refuse to give anything away. As such, if you only read one book in your life, let it be this book.
I did not let like the book
Interesting story and the end surprised me.
I loved everything about this book. I loved the protagonists love of nature. She’s an untamed coastal gal who lives through opposition and still loves fully. She’s a survivor. There are questions. The book is so well-written. I’m typically drawn to memoirs, but this novel feels so real – I wish every book could take me on such a journey!
A beautifully sad yet inspiring story. This novel definitely lived up to the hype. I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates the South.
This book will pull you into the bayou and give you an insight into the life of swamp dwellers who might be written off as ignorant. You will find yourself feeling sorry for an abused and neglected young girl who turns out to be brilliant and talented. It is a well written and captivating story.
Beautifully written! An elegant read with enough mystery to keep you turning the pages!
While we are spending more time at home and shunning our social life, it is the perfect opportunity to catch up on our reading. This book will haunt you long after you read the last page. Kya is a young girl left along to fend for herself at a very young age. Not only does she survive in the wild marsh land of North Carolina, she thrives. When she realizes her life is empty without companionship, two young men try to fill the void with unexpected results. No wonder this book was #1 on the New York Times Bestseller List for so many weeks. You will love it.
Wow
Loved it! First book in a long time that I had a hard time putting down.
Amazing story – I looked up everything Delia has written and read them all. Fabulous, educational, intriguing.
** spoiler alert ** Somewhat disappointed. This was a good read with too many minor flaws. At times the descriptions surpassed their succinctness and flowed into the realm of syrupy. I looked forward to the trial but a very basic conversation was never had between client and attorney; he never asked her if she was guilty or innocent. I don’t know of an attorney who would represent the accused without doing so.
The likelihood of someone to self-teach at the alleged level is questionable. What is this book, a romance, a mystery, a fictional biography?
As I said, mildly entertaining, but is it worthy of so long on the best seller lists? Ah well, we let the likes of Patterson set the bar and this is the result
I had a hard time believing that a young teenager could teach herself to read by reading biology texts. Spoiled it for me.
