So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Not good…
Excellent book; especially well written and covers the story from a small child throughout her life. With a Mother who leaves her; a Father who resents her; a friend who teaches her to read; the development of an immense talent and a love that lasted for years. A real page turner. One you want to keep forever
This book was one of my favorites. It is such an easy read and is so beautifully written. Delia’s descriptive writing makes you feel like you are right there with the main character and can picture the nature that envelopes her. While being a totally enthralling mystery, the book has little pockets of romance, tragedy, and happiness. I highly recommend this book, I read it in a day!
Wonderfully written, evocative, original
Give me more like this!
Beautifully written. The realistic, descriptive nature of the author captivates you. The words transport you to the marsh. The author knows how to stimulate your senses with words.
It’s a beautifully written story with well-defined characters that become real to the reader. There is a lot to learn about the wonders of the marshlands and how both humans and animals treat each other. It’s difficult to put down and when it’s ended, it’s message endures.
this is a must read
Beautifully written, characters that jump off the page, can see the scenes in my mind as I read it and hope that it’s made into a movie soon!
This is one of the best books I have ever read!
Good writing, great setting. Powerful story but… I am getting a bit tired of the ‘all women are great, all men are shit’ theme in many modern novels. Man kills woman – awful, he is a monster. Woman kills man – great, he deserved it. It never gets old … Minus one star for yet ANOTHER cliche plot.
This is supposed to be Southern Gothic I guess, but unlike many people I found it false and unpleasant. Still, a page turner.
Poetic, lyrical descriptions … sad commentary on society’s rejection of any one who is different. Wonderful story. Five stars.
If you are not an avid reader, this is the one book to read this year. This book takes place in the south and is painfully sad in the beginning. A very young girl is left to completely take care of herself. There are abusive family members. The main character grows up in the book and we follow her in her effort to exist and to attempt to grow socially.
The book is also a mystery which flows through at the same time. A young boy is either killed or committed suicide or there was a tragic accident.
Wonderful book. Couldn’t put it down.
Harsh realities through a mystical lens.
I loved how the environment was a character in the book that helped drive the plot.
this book was beautifully written and, at times, filled me with a sense of well being. It was different from any other book I had ever read, and i was amazed to see that it was the author’s first novel.
I loved it. Couldn’t put it down. Neither could my husband.
Beautiful depiction of North Carolina and life at the edge of society
