So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Historical fiction….A MUST READ!!
At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book, but after just a couple chapters, I couldn’t put it down. I could actually feel ‘the marsh girls” love of the birds, the water, the sky. All of it. I’ve recommended to many people and I’ll probably read it again, it was that good.
Outstanding
Loved it.
Is it possible to give a book ten stars instead of only five? I took my time with this book instead of speed reading through it like I do a lot of books. This book….wow, this book made me smile, made me laugh, made me cry my eyes out and have goosebumps all over my body when I was finished. I have read a lot of amazing books, but I have not read a book this detailed and beautiful in a long time. It isn’t my typical thriller or romance, this book is just one in it’s own. I cannot believe this was written as a first book by this author, she hit it out of the park with this one.
I’ve never been to the Carolinas, but I have been to Louisiana, so I can picture the marsh the critters living in it. The author gives you so much detail, you know that she knows the land and this area. Please, if you have not read this book, you need to do so. You won’t regret it.
Loved it. I don’t know anybody who has read it that didn’t love it. Hope to read more from this author in the future.
Thought provoking novel that keeps you engaged throughout. Wonderful characters that are multi-dimensional. Highly recommend!
Love love love this book!
Wonderful read. Surprising. I love the area and how she made it real. She went beyond real and one is transposed, floating on the water or boating over the un chartered pathways. Incredible and possibly believable. One wonders. This was a very nice read and I am late to the game. When I read this there were 7 million purchases on Amazon, and certainly millions more from other sources. What’s the appeal? Magic and nature, pure and simple, is what does the trick. And possibly rooting for the underdog makes us all human. Good story.
Amazing Character. Just when you thought things would straighten out, there was another unpredictable turn of events. Really enjoyed the journey.
I did not love this book nearly as much as most readers. I just thought it was a little far fetched
When I finished reading this book, I wanted to turn it over and start reading it again. The story world drew me in and the characters grabbed me from the first page.
When I got to the end, I had a “wait! what was that again!” moment! Excellent though tragic story of a young girl left to fend for herself in an unsupportive environment who rises above everything stacked against her. A must read!
Wow! This book was amazing. I’ll admit, at first, I found it difficult to get pulled into the story. The start was incredibly depressing, and the imagery of the marsh was a tad heavy. However, before long, I was hooked!
There were so many levels to it. One was the admiration for all Kya survived and even thrived. Another was the constant heartbreak she was forced to endure but did it with such strength and dignity. Then there was the love of the marsh, all it gave to her (and me. I learn some very interesting tidbits-bits). Last was the intrigue of trying to figure out who murder the small-town’s golden boy.
I also want to mention the secondary characters were are as rich and the main. Reading this story was stepping into Kya’s world.
I highly recommend this story!
An original story that is beautifully told. It’s unpredictable, at times funny and sometimes sad. But throughout the story held my attention and the sense of place was always evident. This is a book that I will read again and again.
Delia Owens, zoologist and nonfiction writer, delivers a powerhouse of a novel in her debut fictional story Where The Crawdads Sing. Spinning a literary yarn from page one until the end, Owens creativity with wordsmithing and elements of deliverance of a strikingly amazing novel, is wholeheartedly apparent. Blending quality traits of drama, love, heartbreak, fear, coming of age and other quality thematic elements, the emotions tug at the heartstrings consistently until the conclusion. Her time in the field of zoology is also readily apparent and ties into the novel perfectly without being lost too much in detail. For fans of those who read Where The Red Fern Grows as an adult or child, you will be in love with this book by Owens. Even if this is outside of your genre just as it was for myself, it is still worth the read to truly experience the hype that surrounds this novel.
