So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life–until the unthinkable happens.
Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

An amazing and fantastic story!
Written and well thought out!
The heroine overcomes many obstacles to become her own person, but anything said further would become spoilers. It is best to encounter this book with no preconceptions.
Great story. Unpredictable! Character development is wonderful.
Loved the setting. Could feel the marshland. Very much enjoyed this book.
Great read
Amazing, unpredictable story.
Enjoyed on both first and second read. During second read through, I realized some of the things that female character learned from the nature the she observed as she grew up. Very enjoyable book.
Very well written unusual and original story.
This is one of the best novels ever written. The characters are developed beautifully, the scenery is described so that the reader is there. The story is sad and triumphant. The ending is a surprise that satisfies.
It’s been a long time since a book has made me form an emotional connection with the protagonist. Everything that happens to the protagonist, you feel for her and you find yourself holding your breath in suspense and anticipation. Truly a 5/5 book. The writing is also incredible; easy to ready but very elevated style of writing.
Parts of it were beautifully written, but the plot wasn’t believable. She needed a better editor.
Beautifully written, with an unforgettable protagonist. Exquisite details and understanding of marsh life. At times I felt so angry that people can be so prejudiced, but the final chapters were wonderful. Twists and turns in the plot like the tortuous waterways of the marshland.
Highly recommended.
One of the best books I have read!
I had no clue what this book was about, only that everyone was reading & loving it. It was different than I expected , in a good way. Very thought provoking and unique. How could she really live & exist like that. The plot twist was unexpected.
Didn’t want to put book down. Holds your attention all the way through. Great Read! Best book I have read in a long time. Highly recommend reading.
Great first book. Am waiting to read her new one. The character building in this book was phenomenal and the outcome was unpredictable.
I read some reviews that panned it for being improbable yet predictable. That probably is a reflection of how many books people read in certain genres. I found it held my interest for the most part and I was not expecting the quick wrap-up ending.
I had a hard time putting this book down at night way past bedtime. I loved the main characters and the story was so compelling!
I thought this was well-written, but not absolutely believable ~ there were too many “But, REALLY?!?!?” moments for it to resonate. I know it was on all the ‘best sellers’ lists, but for me? Eh. Just OK.
