Harry Truman was a man of common sense and uncommon insights. In this frank book, the thirty-third president of the United States speaks directly about the office of the presidency, about the best and worst presidents, and his own experience holding office.Nearly every page contains a “Trumanism” – an unexpected insight, a little-known anecdote, or a pithy piece of wisdom. His topics range from … range from “do-nothing presidents” to the way he felt military service undermined a leader’s ability to command a country to his admiration for Abraham Lincoln. Truman writes about moments in presidential history with a warmth and sincerity that brings figures from George Washington to Franklin Roosevelt to life.
Willing to write frankly about his decision to drop the atomic bomb, but humble about his own impact on history, Truman offers a unique perspective on American history.

Who was TRuman? This non college grad haysead from Mo. Truman made up for his lack of formal education by reading everything he could get his hands on. He was today what we would call street smart. Truman had discipline and planning from his research, this is how he made his National decisions. Read it!
what a wonderful man and daughter
Too wordy.
Okay, expected more on his life. It was more a history of presidents
Best book I read all year. HST was unique.
great history but a ton of partisonship
This was a great book well written and informative
Great Book to Read
President Truman’s daughter provides a slightly edited collection of some of her father’s writings. It is presented in his down-home, no nonsense style and covers his views on the good, the bad, and the mediocre leaders of our country. It is somewhat self-justifying, if not self serving but comes across as an honest sharing of the beliefs of one …
Truman in his own voice is interesting, and true to his reputation as a straight forward fellow. Sadly the book is a little too dated. It was interesting to see what Truman thought about some of the other characters of his era and from American history.
Harry was worth a read even if some of his historical observations are preposterous
Great book—typical Truman bluntness.
Helped me better understand Harry, The Man!
This collection of thoughts put down by Truman and given to his daughter for release after he died is an interesting look into his view of the presidency. Written in the plain-spoken manner HT is renown for. I liked best his evaluation of all presidents from Washington through Ike.
I found it a little confusing that he loved Jackson for …
Proud to be from the same state as this outstanding man who became president
HST was a really great man. A really great president. And a fairly good author.
President Truman wrote this book with his daughter. It is worth a second read even and I never say that. I hesitated saying romantic because I thought it would give the wrong slant on it, but it is in fact romantic. Harry meet Bess he was in love. She was hard to get and he chased her till she said yes. He called her the boss for obvious reasons. …
Margaret Truman edited her father’s book after his death. He insisted that he didn’t want it published until then so that he could feel free to say what he wanted to about the quality of different presidents. She said not to expect a professionally written book as her father was a down to earth man who was not a writer. It did inform me what his …
The writing style did not seem to flow easily. But, that’s probably due to Harry’s style of talking. Still, an informative book, worth reading.
This autobiography of Harry Truman gives a great insight to the man as president of the U.S. A no nonsense person; the buck stops here.
