“This would be a lot easier if you had a sense of humor.”“This would be a lot easier if you were a man.”Author’s Note: Do NOT read this book until you’ve read at least Blue Moon #3, or even better #4. I’m protecting your reader experience here. I promise. Trust me there are things that happen that I don’t want to blindside you with and murder all your feelings before you’ve even read the first … all your feelings before you’ve even read the first few books in the series. So go ahead, buy it now. But do NOT read Where It All Began until at least after The Last Second Chance.
John has plans for these two hundred rundown acres. He sees a farm, a family, a future here. He’s not about to drag someone in on the ground floor, not before he’s put in the work to turn rubble into home. But his nosy neighbors have other ideas. Now, he’s saddled with a grad student who’s supposed to lend a hand. Hell, she was also supposed to be a he, not an opinionated, smart-mouthed woman who does nothing but question his every move.
She’s ruining his nice, quiet life. And if she doesn’t finish her thesis and get out of his guest room soon, he’s going to have to scare her off.
Phoebe desperately needs this degree and the money it will bring. What she doesn’t need is this stubborn farmer’s attitude and his pathological need to avoid her. She’s trapped in this tiny hippie town, trying every trick in the book to get the stalwart John to open up. Her future is on the line. Her family needs her. And no farmer is going to stand in her way.

This is the very emotional story of John and Phoebe, beautifully written with so much feeling as well as humor and a lot of steam. I adore Lucy Score’s stories and definitely recommend her books!
A well written beautifully narrated story. This engaging storyline is a standalone but gives great background and insight into the town and characters if the blue moon series. This amazing love story takes you back to where it all began, moving, emotional, romantic and just plain out addicting from beginning to end. The characters are interesting and well developed with great chemistry.
So wonderful to finally meet John Pierce! I read this one after all of the others, so it was great to see not only the beginning of John/Phoebe, but also the entire Blue Moon Bend crowd. Well edited.
Phoebe shows up at Pierce Acres to spend the summer working on the farm and her master’s thesis. John was expecting Allen – NOT Phoebe Allen. Seems even before the conception of the Beautification Committee, matchmaking was already going strong in Blue Moon Bend. John is determined to get the annoying, talkative, never quiet Phoebe off of his farm and out of his house. Phoebe is equally determined to finish her thesis, land a good job, and help her parents out of a financial crisis. Whose will is stronger? Will Phoebe follow her dreams or change them for a dream on Pierce Acres? (We already know the answer!)
This was really a lovely read. Getting to really see more of John – the kind, quiet man who was such an immense influence on his boys and community – was just wonderful. As a bonus, we get to see the budding friendships Phoebe made with the townspeople and the deep friendship between the Pierce and Cardona family. The wake/celebration for John was just right for Blue Moon Bend. Great to see snippets of Carter, Beckett, and Jax as kids and teens. Just a perfect look back at where it all began… Enjoy!
I cried, laughed, and then cried some more throughout the entire reading of this amazing “prequel after” to the Blue Moon Series!! My heart is so full right now! What a funny and beautiful story, yet so bittersweet about John and Phoebe, and where it all started for the Pierces. I enjoyed reading how and where those handsome and wonderful Pierce sons inherited their love, laughter, strength, and kindness . . . Lucy Score–simply amazing!
This book was previously only offered through Lucy Score’s newsletter, and should not be read until after Blue Moon #4!
John Pierce is a poet, a farmer, a lover, a father, a husband, a friend. Those tags mean nothing. For John is so much more. Fans of Blue Moon know what kind of man he was because of the men his sons grew up to be; strong, loyal, funny, determined. And his love affair with Phoebe is something we all aspire to.
Phoebe and John will tear your beating heart out of your chest, and Lucy Score will kiss it and put it back in. This is a seriously heart wrenching book, but just when you think you can’t handle any more tears, Clementine the goat shows up and Lucy Score’s signature humor shines through.
But I can’t reiterate this enough; do not read this until after Blue Moon #4! This is an amazing companion to the Blue Moon series, not to be missed!
4*
I must start by saying I am so glad I took the advice to read books 1 to 5 before diving into this wonderful heartfelt emotional story.
The book tells you more about how John met Phoebe the young college student needing to write her thesis to graduate college and help her parents.
It shows you about a true community the ups and downs.
I laughed and cried truly captivated me I couldn’t put it down.
What a wonderful book. I’ve been reading the Blue Moon series by Lucy Score and stopped at book four to read the prequel (which you shouldn’t read until you at least finish book three). I’m not sure how I can adequately describe how this story touched my heart. So I’ll just say prepare yourself, bring the smiles, the tissues, all your emotions and an open heart. Lucy Score is a master storyteller. How she was able to go back in time and weave this tale and make it so cohesive and seem effortless like it was always there from the beginning makes her kind of a wizard. Her characters are people you wish you could know in real life. This is a book I will definitely be rereading. Thank you Lucy Score for this beautiful story. Somewhere over the rainbow there must be a Blue Moon!
