The year is 1910. Katherine Davis, M.D. is an intelligent, self-assured, and attractive woman whose confidence perfectly reflects the confidence of a new century overflowing with scientific, medical, and technological breakthroughs.
Without a moment’s hesitation, young Dr. Davis accepts the professional invitation of a lifetime when she travels to Chicago’s Hull-House to work with the celebrated … celebrated social reformer, Jane Addams. Katherine is an excellent doctor eager to make a difference in the world and the people around her, and Chicago’s crowded tenements with their burgeoning immigrant population offer just that opportunity.
Everything Katherine believes about right and wrong, about good and evil she learned from her parents and the secure childhood they gave her. But times have changed, and Katherine can no longer rely on the values of the past. She has outgrown that past and the home of her childhood seems outdated and old-fashioned compared to the progressive society around her. She’s an independent woman, who must make her own way and follow her own ideals.
When Katherine meets the dazzling Douglas Gallagher, a man as confident and as fearless as she, a successful man who has left his own past behind, an uncompromising-even ruthless-man, she is asked to choose between her past and her future. And the choice is so much more complicated than she expected! Because for Katherine, deciding where-and who-home really is will change her forever. And for good.

This is book 3 of a series but I had no problem enjoying this book as it is historical and starts with a young lady who became one of the first women Doctors. It is set at the start of the suffrage movement and takes her from Wyoming to Chicago and the original Hull House and low wages for the poor and wealthy arrogance. Her growing up adventures …
I enjoy historical fiction and this book does not disappoint. I am from Chicago and enjoyed reading about the 1900’s history and the strong personalities of the women ( Jane Addams, Alice Hamilton ect…) that defined the time. The fictional characters fit right into the time period.
Written first person, a young woman who has always wanted to be a doctor, grows up in Laramie, Wyoming then interns in 1900’s Chicago. I love the characters in this family, different characters spotlighted in different books of this series. They are stand alone, but left me wanting more and ordering the others too.
At the book’s beginning, Dr. Katherine Davis is just about to begin a year-long internship at Hull House in Chicago. In 1910 a woman physician is still a rarity, but Katherine is well accepted. This book focuses on Katherine, but the theme of trusting your instincts an being true to family is a strong one. Hull House provides quite a contrast for …
I like historical fiction and this one was very appealing. Character development is good and it is a clean love story.
Enjoyed book. Great read for women.
Great story about love and making choices and being an independent woman
Great recounting of history of Hull House in Chicago and a young female doctor’s view of what is truly important. After meeting a wealthy, handsome man who is quite taken with her, both for her beauty and candor, she should be flattered. Her involvement with the terrible working and living conditions which recent immigrants to America in the …

I enjoyed this book about learning to trust and follow your heart!
Extremely interesting and informative. Good character building.
Easy to read, well developed characters in a realistic late 1800’s setting with a realistic plot for conditions of the times.
What a whirlwind! Fabulous story – well told! Set in an era of break-throughs for women and yet still applicable today.
A woman doctor was pretty unusual in 1910 but Katharine Davis was focused and smart. This is an interesting look at early medicne in the inner city and the famed Hull-House. Katharine finds acceptance from social reformer Jane Addams and takes her immigrant patients seriously. Katharine is faced with the inevitable conflict between a handsome, …
I loved this book! The book is very descriptive , but not so much that it is distracting and I could visualize it. The story kept my interest and kept me reading into the night. I will read from this author again.
