The classic World War II thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. Now reissued in a new cover style.
One winter night, seven men and a woman are parachuted onto a mountainside in wartime Germany. Their objective: an apparently inaccessible castle, headquarters of the Gestapo. Their mission: to rescue a crashed American general before the Nazi interrogators can force him to … him to reveal secret D-Day plans.

I recommend this book IF you haven’t previously seen the movie. The movie is much better than the book: beautiful scenery, excellent actors, action-packed to fit the ambience.
So, this is the book that inspired me to begin writing. After reading it, I saw the film when it first came out too – Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood and a host of other stars. Riveting, twist after twist, and you don’t know what it’s all about really until the very last pages – a technique that in my own humble way I tried to follow in my first book, Spider 2-3. I know, I may be showing my age a little here, lol, but the book is a timeless classic and the film one of the best war-films ever made. Have a read – you’ll enjoy it. Alistair MacLean – What a writer! What a storyteller!
What is there that is not to like about this book and this author. He hails from a bygone era but his books are true classics – none more so than this masterpiece.
Just like the movie which I found amazing. A terrific story, especially if you NEVER SAW the movie.
Thought I would read as I saw the movie in the early 70’s. The book was a quick read and but very predictable.
This was a very exciting book. I had not read this author before so I enjoyed some new twists and turns that were entirely unpredictable. Great book!
Classic!!! I read it 44 years ago…!!!..and recently read it again!!!… It was just as good as I remember it to be!! Enjoy!!
Great WW II action. Characters are extremely capable.
ONE OF THE BEST WW2 BOOKS I HAVE READ
One of his best
Loved it!
MacLean keeps you turning pages!
Anything by Alistair McLean is worth the time. Great books!
One of his better books.
While the plot seems a bit implausible, until you realize the story of the Man Who Never Lived was true, Alistair McLean’s Where Eagles Dare is a thrilling military spy thriller/action story set in WW II. Eight people parachute into the mountains of the Third Reich to break into an impenetrable Gestapo facility.
Or so the story goes.
Subplots abound in this thriller and the story takes plenty of twists and turns in this McLean Thriller.
Saw the movie long ago, it was good! Read the book, as usual) a whole lot better! Great read!
Mundane and unrealistic, even for an older novel.
A blast from the past. Reads like the script from an action packed spy thriller. A bit dated but still worthwhile if you like this genre. Author was the undisputed master of this genre in the 60’s.
Loved the movie! Loved the book!
A true classic
