This is a must read if you enjoy Debra Webb’s books. I was totally engrossed in this book, it covers a range of different emotions. The book is full of twists and turns, and although I had basically figured out part of the outcome before the end of the book, the ending was still a surprise. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys suspense stories.
These people, this town, just popped off the page and into my heart. Emma lives alone, has a slight problem with alcohol, ptsd, friends, and is or was an excellent forensic anthropologist.
Meanwhile, her mom Helen, is still living in the small town where she raised Emma and Natalie. Emma thinks Natalie was the perfect daughter and the one her mom loved best. Helen dreams of Natalie but worries, as only a mom can, about Emma. Helen is widowed and her best friend and secret keeper is Ginny, a black woman who raised Letty, her daughter, in the same town. Something horrific happen here 25 years ago and the two mothers are united in their secret……but sometimes, secrets slip out.
This is a small town, haunted by two missing girls never found. And now two more girls are missing…why?? Natalie and her best friend Stacy disappeared off the planet, never to be found. Small towns have their mean girls, cliques, and families that just dig in and claim the whole town as theirs. Such a nice town, summer is hot, lemonade and sweet tea, breezes and sitting on the porch is a bit hard to enjoy as the drama from 25 years ago is replayed when two more girls go missing.
Emma is back at her mom’s only to discover her mom had a heart attack. Letty, her friend is now a police officer investigating the two missing girls. It brings back memories for Stacy’s dad and for Natalie’s mom.
You hear about the devoted dog that never left the farmhouse, waiting for Natalie. Helen, her husband and Emma had to take food out for the dog to their old place along with a note to Natalie…if she ever returned. Grief is expressed quietly but deeply and reverently. And each person left behind deals differently, anger, alcohol, denial, and fear.
Emma deals with bones and now she is back and sadly has to deal with bones maybe belonging to her sister and friend. Letty has to find the new missing girls plus the suspicion her father killed Natalie and Stacy all those years ago.
Beautifully written, heartfelt people, and a town that seems so nice. Nice resolution at the end and inspirational in the way the mothers and daughters team up and work together for the truth. The hard part was the moms, Helen and Ginny, and why they held on to their secret. But then this is a rural community and people did not become close friends to other people of a different race. And the fact small communities have police and officials reporting to the mayor and all his or her family makes it hard to report certain crimes without fear. But secrets kill, so truth will come out, one way or another.
This is great fiction, a deep mystery, a book to savor….5 stars

wow! This book was amazing so many emotions. I didn’t want to stop listening. I had not read any thing by Debra Webb before but I will in the future. She is a wonderful writer. I didn’t guess the ending which is rare for me. I also enjoyed Mitzt Pirkey as the narrator of this book. Mitzi does a wonderful job of giving this written book audio life. I was gifted this book with the understanding that I would leave an honest review. Well honestly it is wonderful and a must read.
Debra Webb gives us a straight up mystery this time. Along with that the bond between two childhood friends and their, at times, complicated relationship with their mother’s.
You can always go home, but when you leave ghosts behind eventually they will come back to haunt you. Emma knew that running away could never bring her sister back. When she was only eight years old they were in an a school bus accident, one that she walked away from remarkably unharmed. Her older sister and best friend weren’t so lucky, it seemed they vanished into thin air. Twenty five years have passed and the missing girls’ memories are still floating over her hometown like a never ending fog. When Emma returns after a exhausting break down, she finds herself sucked right back to that same day again. Like a bad dream that is on repeat she realizes that this time she needs the answers to her questions. However finding them means that she reopens those wounds, one’s that don’t just affect her but the whole town.

Debra Webb is one of my go-to authors. I love her books.
Emma Graves, a Forensic Anthropologist, had a melt down at her job and goes home to pull herself together. When she returns tho, 2 girls have gone missing, just like her sister and her best friend did 25 years ago after a bus accident, when they walked away to get help. Emma was the only survivor and she doesn’t remember what really happened. When 2 people are rescued from a cave and say that they found human remains, Emma is called to help, but who do they belong to? While the town is reeling from this second tragedy, will the truth come out about what really happened?
Debra Webb knocks it out of the park with this one! You don’t want to miss the chance to read it! I was provided an early copy by the publisher for an honest review.
When You Come Back
Debra Webb
Can someone return home? Emma Graves wonders after everything that happened to her if it is at all possible especially when history seems to be repeating itself.
Twists and turns that keep you wondering where you are going to end up. After 25 years can the truth be learned and if so will it tear apart family and friends?
Debra Webb has once again created a suspense thriller you just can’t put down. She is truly a masterful storyteller.
I always think I will casually read one of Debra Webb’s books and it never happens! When You Come Back was no exception. I was hooked from the first paragraph and couldn’t put it down. Debra draws you in with life-like, believable characters that are flawed just like the rest of us. The story is fast-paced with a surprise ending that I didn’t see coming. Highly recommended.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.
