Before you start reading when We Collide by A.L. Jackson, I want to warn you all of the fact that this one comes with some pretty hefty triggers. If you are triggered by spousal abuse, both emotionally and physically, I highly recommend you go into this one with your eyes WIDE OPEN.
I decided not to dive too deep into what this novel is about due to the fact that it could be very easily spoiled. All you have to know is what the blurb tells you. This is a deeply emotional novel based on vengeance and redemption.
A.L. Jackson has her own book club where each month she picks two books we can read. Last month, I chose When We Collide, it’s one of the few books still on my tbr from this author.
To start, I had no clue what I was getting myself into. All I knew was that this one would be angsty, and there would probably be tears. I had no clue this novel was all about one woman’s struggle to survive and protect her son in a world so cold. And I had no idea the redemption would come at stakes as high as these.
Holy hell, I have to say that the ending had me on the edge of my seat. The anticipation of not knowing where A.L. Jackson would take this story, had me clinging to my Kindle. My feelings weren’t mapped out; they were all over the place.
Now, onto why I dropped a star rating. I wanted more moments between Maggie, Jonathon, and William. I wanted the ultimate moment of clarity that would normally come at the end. However, I felt this ending was a bit rushed. Let’s chalk this up to another episode of spoiled reader syndrome because that’s what it is. A.L. Jackson spoiled me with her swoony heroes and strong heroines.
Overall, When We Collide was good, I just needed a little bit more to push it to the scale of greatness.

When We Collide
Written by: A.L. Jackson
A.L. Jackson is an author that I read often. Her books are angsty and always emotional. She makes her readers work to get their happy ending and I don’t mind that work at all. When We Collide is one of her early books and this book took my breath away.
When We Collide introduces us to William and Maggie. They were not just friends but lovers in high school; now not having seen each other in years they are about to see each other again. When this happens more truths will be revealed and the suspense Jackson is known for will boil over as the past comes back not just to haunt William and Maggie but will be the catalyst to provoke a showdown that no one saw coming.
Between the nightmares that William is having and seeing Maggie again there is so much for these two to work through. There have been truths that were held back from William but it was done to protect an innocent and Maggie is willing to pay to keep those truths from her abusive husband. Emotions run high through this story but if you’re a Jackson fan you know that your tears are going to be worth the ending.
It was wonderful reading one of her early stories. I recommend When We Collide and A.L. Jackson to those looking for a romantic suspense story.
When We Collide was a heartbreaking story that touches on the awfulness of abuse, getting a second chance, finding strength in standing up for yourself, others and the power of love. A.L’s writing hooked me in like always and I couldn’t wait to read and find out more about William and Maggie
This book broke my heart and brought out all the emotions. I felt for both characters and their struggles. The decisions made that affected their lives and broke them emotionally. I wanted to weep for Maggie and her situation both growing up and the one she ultimately chose. It was definitely hard to read at times and I had a hard time connecting with both characters at the start, but as their story unfolded I couldn’t put it down. I loved that we got chapters from their past to fill in what was going on in the present. A very good well written book that touched on a very serious topic but written well. Look forward to reading more by this author.
