Did you ever hear the joke about the guy whose wife cheated on him with his best friend? So he quit his job, moved into his parents’ basement, and gained fifty pounds? No? Because that wasn’t a joke. It was my life. Four years later, I’m back with a dream job, a killer apartment, and a set of abs that are better than ever. So, when Maggie Light, a stunning, snarky blonde moves in next door, and … blonde moves in next door, and we spend the hottest weekend of our lives together, I think this could be the greatest comeback story ever.
That is until I realize Maggie has moved to town to do one thing—steal my job.
Maybe this isn’t a comeback story after all. Maybe this is war—one I intend to win.
What I never anticipated was that maybe I’d rather win her.
Perhaps, if I’m lucky, the universe has finally run out of jokes and I can somehow win both.

WOW, you guys! These two authors are amazing in their own rights but together they are a dynamite pair. This book is Aly and M. Mabie’s first collaboration, but you would not have known – the writing is eloquent and fluid from beginning until the end. The story itself is absolutely adorable. Shane is a 33 years old divorcee who has been hurt by his cheating ex-wife. He is living a secluded life and working for his family business. Maggie could not be more opposite. Maggie is young, smart, witty and carefree. Maggie moved across the country looking for a fresh start and a dream job. First night Maggie met Shane at the bar. They had an incredible time together and turned out he is her next-door neighbor. What she did not expect was that Shane is also her new colleague and biggest competition. Never a good idea to mix business and pleasure, right? Yikes
I love that their relationship is easygoing, fun and honest. Amazing chemistry from the start and full blown passionate and steamy by the end. I also enjoy the hilarious and flirty banters especially when Shane is making fun of his weight in the past and Maggie poking about Shane being an old man They are just quirky and endearing you can’t help but fall in love with both. Overall, When the Walls Come Down was a heartfelt story about of love, friendship, and family. Lighthearted and entertaining – just what I needed for a lazy weekend Rumor has it, they have another book coming and I can not wait! Nicely done ladies!!!
I laughed and smiled so much while reading this book…this is an epic feel good romance!
Maggie takes a risk, leaves her hometown and family to move across the country. Not knowing a soul in San Francisco, she heads out to a bar and ends up meeting Shane. The conversation that ensues had me in stitches and I actually snort laughed!
These two are made for each other…wit, sarcasm, sense of humour, and chemistry…perfect! Perfect, except now they’re also in competition, vying for the same job. Their romance may have been denied but their connection was undeniable.
I couldn’t have loved Maggie and Shane more. This story was exactly what I needed…entertaining, swoon worthy, funny, and steamy…an absolute must read!

Just in time for the beach! A great collaboration between Aly Martinez and M. Mabie. You can’t go wrong with these two. Shane and Maggie are great together. Their story is a fun, sweet read with witty banter.
Maggie has a family that loves her but she wants more. She applies for a job out of state and starts packing when she gets hired. Her sister talks her into going out and that’s how she meets Shane. Shane is eating his normal meal when he sees Maggie. He asks her out but she’s reluctant, can he convince her?
I started reading Aly Martinez last year and I am hooked. Her stories have all captured me and left me thinking about them for days after I’ve finished. This story was different in the best of ways. This was my first time reading anything by M. Mabie and I have to say this was such a fun and feel good story. I am loving the way these two ladies work together and I will definitely be looking into more from Ms. Mabie.
Shane and Maggie will have you hooked from the beginning, you will laugh out loud a few times, with the best of feels thrown in the mix. This was a great story to read during this time. And knowing these two authors wrote this story during this crazy time for this exact reason just makes me love it even more. Absolutely a must read!!
I LOVED Maggie and Shane’s book! I loved how strong Maggie was to pack up and move across the country to a new city for a new job…knowing not a soul. I just loved everything about her! And swoony Shane…he was perfect for her! I loved checking back in with characters from past books as well!! I’m going to keep this short and sweet and just tell you this is a must read!
“When the walls come down, there’s just love.”
Everyone stop what you’re doing right now to pick up this book and read it! It’s everything you didn’t know you needed and so much more.
I absolutely loved the Wake series as well as the Retrieval series and to see these characters merge into an entirely different type of story can only be described as straight genius.
This book was funny and witty and swoonworthy and full of all the feel good moments you can possibly handle in one set of pages. Truly all of the feels.
I cant even express how magical this book was for me. I mean I was literally smiling when I finished. An ear to ear, teeth showing, couldn’t possibly hide kind of smile. I can barely contain my glee just writing this review.
Shane and Maggie took me on a ride that sang with love and laughter I won’t soon forget. I actually want to start all over from the beginning because I’m giggling just thinking about some of their banter.
Just do yourself a favor and take a break to read this heart warming story. Do your own smiling and snort giggling. (And possibly eat all the chocolate cake and drink all the free beer)
Aly Martinez and M. Mabie have created a PERFECT romcom!!! When The Walls Come Down has it all cleaver writing, comedic banter, endearing characters, all the sexy yumminess, good time feelings you could ask for!! Totally unputdownable!!!
Shane and Maggie give us the PERFECT lighthearted, sexy romantic comedy that will have you laughing so much!! Absolutely one of my favorite reads of 2020!!! I will definitely be telling everyone to read this one!!
When I heard about this duo of authors coming together to write this book I was excited because I’ve enjoyed books by both of them. Taking characters from their other books (Shane from Mo’s Bait Series and Maggie from Aly’s Retrieval Duet) they write seamlessly together. Shane has been divorced for 4 yrs now and even though physically he head turned his life around, he doesn’t do much other than work. So when he is basically forced out of the office; he takes a chance and horribly flirts with the beautiful blonde at the end of the bar. Maggie literally just moved across country and is also pushed by her sister to have some fun before starting her new job on Monday. But she gives into Shane awkward attempts and they share an incredible weekend. (Their first date was actually very sweet and there chemistry was palpable.) But reality crashes in Monday when they find out they are coworkers and Maggie was hired to takeover Shane’s job (one that he’s not willing to give up). When a work partnership doesn’t work out they are forced to compete for the position which doesn’t exact bode well for their personal relationship. But their mutual attraction isn’t easily ignored. A bit of angst and drama later (but don’t worry, it’s not Bait angst) and they do get a HEA. Such a fun, sweet read. And I’m thinking we will see more from collaborating from these two authors.
I fell in love with the book after reading only a few pages. These two ladies swept me off my feet with this incredible love story. Love can strike at any second but can it also mess with your life completely throwing it into a tailspin? Why yes it can. Choosing a new path to keep what you truly want is worth the risk. Love makes us better in so many ways. Watching this couple’s relationship unfold was truly magical. I got lost in the story and finished in one sitting. The writing was flawless. The characters were poeple we could connect with in our everyday lives. I love this book and I hope you pickup a copy any enjoy the journey these two ladies take you on.
I think M. Mabie and Aly Martinez just might be my favorite “power couple”!! I love each author’s work individually so when they announced they were co-writing, cue instant excitement! The expectation was automatically set really high in my mind and imagine how surprised I was when they surpassed that expectation with When the Walls Come Down!!
It’s a feel good, sexy plot with just the right amount of sass and humor. Is it an entirely new plot to me? No but these authors always have a way of making something I’ve read before seem new and refreshing. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to more works from this duo!!
An amazing weekend with a recluse changes everything. Competing for the same job pushes all those feelings aside and the best man or woman will win.
“When the walls come down, there’s just love.” Ahhh this book! It is just the funniest, sweetest thing I’ve read!
“Magical. Barf. Cliché. I know. But there was no other way to describe it.” I could quote these chicks all day long! They wrote a great story that had me laughing, crying, and awwing every other paragraph!
Wow…just Wow!!
When the walls come down just blew me away! I absolutely loved every minute of it. Shane and Maggie are absolutely perfect for each other. The banter between them will have you laughing out loud. This book will make you believe in fate and in true love. Be ready to laugh and to cry while reading this one. Once you pick it up you won’t be able to put it down. A definite 5 star read.
5 stars for Duke Peach Warren Blue Milk
Engrossing and engaging story that made me giggle nonstop. I wished I could jump in the pages and be friend with Shane & Mags. The Best couple of this year!!!
“A blond, Southern, ranch-dressing-eating, Italian-food-loving hoot” & Dressing Thief, tight behind Fat Boy Shane”
What a hilariously sexy and Swoonworthy laughter filled story to make my mood lighten in these dark times. I suggest you grab it as soon as it releases.
I swooned hard, I fell in love with Fat Boy Shane. And I was so enamored by “Maggie Peach Light Gray Italian.” .
I’m a Rom-com fan, but I’ve NEVER read this smart banter like this ever before. Since This is my first by Mo Mabie, I’m thinking it’s her humor at work, added with trademark sensitivity of Aly Martinez, making it a perfect cocktail of unputdownable Romcom Cranberry Vodka. Delicious!!
I laughed at every page, every chapter. A huge smile plastered on my face the moment my eyes landed on the first word, and it remained in place till the last.
It’s snarky, it’s sassy, it’s supremely intelligent piece of writing, if there ever was. It’s a breath of freshest air you’ll ever breathe, it’s that invigorating and energizing. It’s fluffy and soft in feel and tickled me pink till I saw glitter and stars
A sister of karma- serendipity is hard at work on the adjoining glass balconies
“This whole thing with Maggie felt more like luck. Or serendipity. Or some other word people used when stars aligned and things just seemed meant to be.”
Fated couple, Shane Warren and Maggie Light meet at a bar/best steak restaurant in San Francisco. Rusty at dating duo have awkward small talk and trade jokes and soon the banter turns to flirtation and the BEST weekend sex for both of them. It’s spent Tangled in the bed sheets, under or over each other…
Next day the world comes tumbling down, or I should say, a wall comes up between them and they find each other standing on opposite sides of the professional scale
“He needed that job just as much as I did. It was my escape. But it was his refuge. It was an impossible situation. Trying to hold on to the life you want, all the while hoping the world crumbles for the person you care about most.
Who knew serendipity was such a masochist?”
The whole story is about the unsurmountable walls between them. Emotional, physical and ambitious walls that can’t be scaled. Either a belt tied bucket goes over them, or they can stare at it. But the walls are there, right between them.
*sigh* when all seems lost, they have to take a hammer and break away a brick (read: a piece) of it, thus injuring his wrist, her shoulder and their collective hearts.
I can’t sing enough praises, just go grab it on the 4th and thank me later
This is the first book that I’ve read by M. Mabie, although I have read just about everything by Aly Martinez. This is the first book that they have co-written, and I hope it’s not the last because this was a great book!
Right from the start, I noticed the connection to Aly Martinez’s “Transfer” (Maggie is Heath’s sister), and then had to go see if there was a connection with one of M. Mabie’s books, and sure enough, it was (Shane is connected to “Bait”)!
I loved how these two were both so lost at the beginning, but found themselves. When the Walls Come Down has a little angst, but is high on the enjoyment! I definitely recommend!
I almost feel like I don’t have to say anything… the two author’s names on this book is enough reason for anyone to one click this book. I LOVE both M Mabie and Aly Martinez, their writing always captures me and I devour their stories so when I found out they were co-writing…. I HAD TO HAVE IT.
Let me tell you, they did not disappoint! Their writing was absolutely seamless together and within 15% of the story, I was already in love with Shane and Maggie and couldn’t wait to see where they would take us and boy was it good.
Not only was the story laugh out loud funny and totally swoony, it covers some pretty great topics like learning about change, and going after your dreams, and what you are willing to do to love.
This story was exactly what I needed and I cannot wait to read more from these two.
An amazing duo bring the very best in this frienemies to lovers comedy!
