We return to the little town of Glencoe with another story of redemption, grace, and second chances. God’s grace flowed forth like a raging river. Lives were touched, and families were changed, and one man was at the center of it all. Did the grace of God suddenly stop flowing when tragedy struck Glencoe? And what do Reagan Lamb, Kyle Shaw, Marisa Fields, and Jenny Wade have in common? All of … their lives had been devastated in some way. Each of them watched their dream of living happily ever after disappear into the mess of their lives. Although feeling alone and abandoned, God was still at work in their lives, intertwining their lives to the lives of other Glencoe residents we’ve already met. As one chapter of their lives ends, a new one begins if they are open to God’s leading. God shows each one of them that He’s still writing their stories.

This book is a Sequel to Grace Like A River Flows. The Author writes his books in the mode of someone telling a story instead of a first person POV. The main character here is Reagan, the Pastor of Glenco Community Church. This is a story of Faith and victories for the town, of great loss and great love. It will make you laugh at some of the shenanigans and make you cry at the suffering. All in all it is a story of real life. It also has a strong salvation message which I especially appreciated. If you have suffered loss in your life and ever questioned God’s love for you then you will be able to empathize with Reagan. It also has romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. You will enjoy this book much more if you have read the first book in the series. You can get acquainted with the characters and the situations in the town and most of the characters by first reading Grace Like A River Flows.
Although this is a stand alone story, I recommend starting with ‘Grace Like a River Flows,’ by R. Marshall Wright. ‘When the River Runs Dry’ picks up 3 years after the end of the first book. Returning to the odd little town of Glencoe, it seems like the grace which flowed so freely in the first book is running dry. If you have ever dealt with grief and felt like God had abandoned you, this book is for you. I love the way the author tells a story in his unique way and then connects all the pieces together and makes them fit. We find that God is never far away and is always working on what we may consider random pieces of our lives. But in the end, he puts all those broken pieces together in ways we could not have understood beforehand. This book will touch your heart and perhaps dampen your eyes. I loved it. Watch for Beasley!
I’ll be honest I delayed reading this book because I knew the author would make me think, he would put me through a wringer, in a good way. I started out highlighting parts that I thought I would use in my review, then I realized I might have a third of the book highlighted. Reagan Lamb caught my attention in the previous book and he held it all the way through this one. Although I cannot relate to his physical size and abilities, I can relate to his discussions with God regarding the things that happen in his life. The discussion about Beasley and God’s relationship with dogs cracked me up. Then we get to Kyle’s first talk with Gideon: “Yeah, your reaction is what I usually receive. I used to start with the words, “don’t be afraid’, but that rarely went too well.” That I can well imagine. Then there is God’s talk with Reagan/Pratt. “Your life hasn’t ended. A chapter ended, but I’m still writing your book. And I’d appreciate it if you’d let go of the pen and let me finish”. How often do we need to hear that? This book will make you cry, make you laugh, but most important it will make you look at your relationship with God.
Seriously good story telling!!
This is one of the absolute BEST sequels I have ever read. This story is so full of Faith and redemption you will be touched to the very core. I completely loved this book!
This story touched me in a way no other has touched me. If you have lost someone you loved deeply, this story will minister to you. The story is beautifully written. The inspiration is obviously given from the Holy Spirit in order for the author to understand the hurt and grief that one experiences in the face of losing a piece of your own heart. But no matter what, the Father won’t leave you. He sticks around through all the anger and questions and keeps on loving and working towards your healing and future. Please read the first book, Grace Like A River Flows if you haven’t already. Then this is the 2nd book in the series. You will read two of the best books that will touch your heart and soul. I highly recommend these books.
This is a well written book that will touch your heart and soul. Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. This is a book everyone should read, not only is it a wonderful story but sweet Beasley will show you how God uses animals as angels to help us. I can’t wait for the next book by this author. I received an ARC copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
