Nathan Mayhew is on his way to El Paso, to become the new deputy of Sheriff Jacob Collins. After rescuing a woman who was held hostage by a band of banditos, he manages to arrive in town safe and sound. But little does he know that those banditos were only the beginning of the deputy’s perilous adventure. When he discovers that his own boss might be behind a heinous crime, Nathan decides to fight … fight corruption even if he will have to put his life on the line. Will he connect the dots, and uncover the truth about mysterious deaths and disappearance in the mountains?
Being afraid to trust anyone, even the Sheriff himself, Nathan tries to get a grip of the crime that infests the town to the point of destroying it. Luckily for him, he soon finds love and support in the face of Eliza Gable, the daughter of the largest merchant in town. But as long as there are criminals out there, Nathan cannot find peace and live his happily ever. In the end, will Nathan’s new love survive the onslaught? Will he serve justice and protect the innocent or will evil overpower good?
Women are disappearing, Mexicans are closing in, and all things seem destined to collide in a fiery eruption of violence that will shake up a whole town. Will Nathan triumph over the ruthless criminals, or will it already be too late?
A gripping, action-packed story of love, loss, and horror that will leave the reader breathless. A must-read for fans of Western action, with a touch of romance.

The life of Nathan Mayhew was not easy. He is challenged at every turn as he travels through Texas, the deserts and small settlements in the territory. In his travels he met lone riders, wagons, families and bandits. This book details his life, his dangers and the ways he protected those he cared about. My hubby and I could literally see the flora of the dessert as it was in bloom.
This is a well written western with tons of action. The author does a great job taking you back to the day and describing his scenes in vivid detail. He kept me glued to the pages with the intense story line and weaves in a touch of romance along the way. The story moves fluidly with strong characters and is a true page turner. I enjoyed and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
This book was an absolute gem to read! The great character and plot development kept me turning the pages which made this book a very enjoyable and entertaining read!
Consequences all around
The new deputy in El Paso is Nathan Mahew. On his way to his new job, he rescues, Sally Ann Tremont from a quartet of desperados who have murdered her husband and violated her.
Nathan’s new boss, Sheriff Jacob Collins, appears unconcerned about the attack on Sally. He does not like Sally getting the money from the sale of the horses that the desperados were riding. (He wanted the money in his pocket.)
Nathan’s father was an honest lawman. As Nathan gets a feel for the town, something doesn’t feel right about the sheriff. The town’s residents hint about what is going on; however, Nathan can not get any substantial charges.
Nathan meets the owner of the Riverbend Saloon, Dan Taggart. Dan runs the underbelly of the town under the radar. Prostitution (legal), teen thugs, white female slavery, gambling, and the sheriff.
Dan Taggert is concerned that El Diablo Rio in Durango will retaliate for the loss of his men and the women. The spy/snitch El Paco travels between the two towns, keeping El Diablo Rio updated.
Read to find out what happens when Nathan digs deeper into the underbelly of the town.
What will Nathan do when two of the town’s women residents are quietly catfighting for him?
What will happen when a nice girl spurns her father’s choice for her hand in marriage in favor of Nathan?
What will happen when a saloon girl cannot keep her boss and the sheriff happy?
Saddle up women and men; it is a long, rough ride.
I read a free copy. This author is fast becoming my favorite writer in this genre–due to the believable white hat/black characters and the supporting characters in the plots and subplots. There is fast-paced action, good versus evil, and consequences all around. I will let you judge the happily ever aspect of the tale. Don’t miss this book—it ought to be a movie!
WOW! Such a great book ! I’m a fan of Austin’s writing, there’s not many western writers that captivate the scenery, graphics, characters and the readers attention like Austin does. You don’t even realize the book is as long as it is because you’re so captivates and need to know what happens.
A young deputy and a brave woman fight for good and find love along the way.
Highly recommend Austin’s books!! I received this as an ARC and this is my honest and voluntary review.
