Exciting and captivating!!
A great YA/School Romance debut novel!
This is the first book in the Cherry Creek Series and ends with a cliffhanger.
Fallon Blake is a broken girl, a survivor. In her search of a new beginning, she started a new chapter in her senior year. New friends, new goals and a new guy that pamper her senses and emotions. She don’t want more complications in her life, but Jesse in not the kind of guy that give up. Jesse Callaway is powerful, popular, dangerous, fearful, an alpha guy with a beautiful heart. The handsome one that every girl die for.
Callie Rae bring us an emotional rollercoaster story with suspense, a hint of humor and a strong words about unity, friendship, family relationship and love. It was a great read and left me wanting more. Carson, Jesse’s adoptive brother is my favorite secondary character. I wish he can have his own story. I’ll be looking forward to the next book in this series.
I loved this one. When I write reviews sometimes I write them while reading the story and then fix it up after, other times I write them as soon as I finish, and then sometime I wait a few days before writing a review. With this one I loved the story so much but wondered if my love for it would fade after so I waited a bit to write the review. This morning was a day I could sleep in but oh no I woke up at 5am with this book on my mind and things I waited to say about. So yeah, this book is a great read, that has stuck with me.
Jesse is a big deal at Cherry Creek High School and in town. He’s not one to mess with. He can come across as jerky at times. He has this bad boy swagger but a vulnerable heart which makes him oh so swoon worthy.
Fallon is the new girl. She a tough girl and doesn’t like to be told what to do. She has a past that she trying to get a new start from but the past doesn’t stay in the past. She has layers and her story was a little heart string pulling.
Fallon and Jesse have a great connection. They have some tension and their relationship that just felt perfect. I loved the side characters, Jade (Jesse’s sister) and Cason (Jesse’s friend) too.
The ending surprised me. It’s a cliffhanger and I hadn’t expected that. I can’t wait to read the next one.
She came to Cherry creek as a shadow of her former self.
All she wanted was to go unseen, to blend in and be left alone.
Then he happened….
One night, one party and then she was no longer on the outside. She gained an invitation to the inner circle.
Everyone knew who she was, and what she had done. Peace was a thing of the past…
What a fantastic read once it got going!
To start with I admit I was totally sat on the fence, but then the party and the pipe happened and I couldn’t put it down!
Fast paced, and action packed. Angst and heart felt moments galore, amazing!
Fallon is the tough girl with a secret past who once you see her true heart is someone you can’t ignore and would always want on your side.
Jesse is the boy who grew up too fast. He’s a little bad and dangerous, but alot hot and sexy. The two go perfectly!
They might have very different backgrounds but the loyalty they bring to the table is unrivalled and the sexual chemistry between them is off the charts!
I couldn’t get enough of them. I loved watching him stepping into her space, and her backing away. Their dance was right for them, for the story and for me.
I cant wait to see what happens next. The cliffhanger ending had me gasping for breath!
I loved this book. Callie Rae has written a wonderful book. The way that she wrote this story just sucks you right into this world that she has created and you never want to leave. The storyline is something that you would experience in the real world. You automatically fall in love with the main characters. I need a Jesse in my life. This book reminded me of the way that it feels when you fall in love for the very first time. The struggles that the characters go through bring out great emotion for the readers. If you are looking for a great book with action, suspense and a love story thrown in this is your book. I will definitely be looking for the next one!
I very much enjoyed this book which surprised me because I’m not into high school romances usually but I read an excerpt from the book and decided I needed to read more.
The characters are awesome I love them all especially Cason. The story is amazing and the chemistry between Jesse and Fallon is off the charts I cannot believe they able to dance around it as much as they do. I didn’t put the book down once I started it and my god I’m dying here with the Cliffhanger. I need to find out when we get more because that cliffhanger oh man things are going to get pretty messy……..
*** I did receive a free advanced copy of this book from the author and Wildfire Marketing Solutions in exchange for a fair and honest review ***
When Shadows Fallow
(Cherry Creek Series Book 1)
Written by: Callie Rae
This is the first time I’ve read a book written by Callie Rae and although I don’t often read YA stories the blurb caught my eye and I thought I would give it a shot.
Fallon is a girl who seems to be carrying the world on her shoulders and we soon learn that she carries quite a load for someone in her senior year of school. She has a loving mother who supports her, but seems to be a bit lost at how she can get the daughter she loves out of the darkness that seems to be haunting her.
They are a small family of two and the decision is made to move from their old town to one a few hours away, a new town, a new high school and hopefully some kind of closure to the thoughts that continually haunt Fallon.
Into Fallon’s life and without being asked, Jesse and Jade Calloway (twin brother and sister) and their cousin Cason Cruise become the group in Fallon’s very small circle of friends. Jesse sees something in Fallon that he himself feels and these two drift towards each other with no real definition to what their relationship is. It takes them time to trust each other, but when secrets are shared and hopes and dreams are verbalized they realize that they can overcome their pasts.
Pasts however come back to haunt Fallon and when a meeting with the darkest day of her past catches up with her, she is glad she has her friends. What she doesn’t know is her past has already been causing problems behind the scenes.
Staying safe may not happen, with an act of arson, jealousy, revenge and pressure from Jesse’s father, it looks like Fallon’s past may find her yet and this time she may not survive.
I actually had no idea that this would be a cliffhanger, but When Shadows Follow kept my attention and I’m ready to move on and see how book two treats Fallon and Jesse.
Holy Moly!!! Wow….. just….. words are hard right now.
This is a new to me author and my goodness am I glad I found this author when I did!! I haven’t been consumed by a book in a while and boy did this one knock me on my back. So many emotions running around my head, so many thoughts… shock hasn’t worn off just yet.
Fallon is utterly destroyed by something that happened at her previous school and my goodness did my mind run with the idea of so many things that could’ve happened. The darkness that seems to overtake her entire being means it had to be something substantial. I just love Fallon’s stubbornness at everything. Trying to keep her distance but all things happen for a reason.
Jesse seems to be darkness himself but he commands everyone and everything. It seems a little sexy to me at the beginning but then this party happens and I got upset with his reactions. I really love Cason though and the way he seems to have such spot on humor!
Trying not to give too much away but I was just not quite ready for what happened. I cried at times and laughed a lot and mostly just waited for more build up of the tension and waited for their interactions. I can’t wait to see what happens next!!
Oh no worries I simply just fell off my bed.
The ending of book 1 has got me begging for more, and luckily there is. Infact book 3 is coming soon!
Jesse (hero) and Fallon (heroine) are an indestructible pair. I mean, come on “This man precisely what he’s up against. Two people willing to fight for each other, even with someone so close.” I have got chills. Callie Rae has done it. She has created a trilogy that I will never get bored of, regardless of how many times I read it- and I haven’t even read the third book yet.
Every tear, every crash, every smile, every smirk I felt them all as I read. I could really imagine everything playing out before me chapter after chapter. It was amazing, honestly speaking. The single pov is really helpful in this story really focusing on Fallon pain, past experiences, and how she grows from them. Can’t say I didn’t love every minute of reading!
5/5 stars
When Shadows Follow caught me completely off guard. I was just looking for something to keep my interest after not being able to finish a ton of books last week. But When Shadows Follow was beyond what I expected.
Fallon Blake’s story is broken, heartbreaking, and just painful in every way. There are so many things no one should have to deal with ever during life and Fallon is fighting them while still in high school. while I won’t give anything away because I felt going in blind was the best way, this book will make you feel everything.
Jesse Calloway is king of Cherry Grove. When he says jump people say how high. On the outside he has it all, happy family, money, the girls want him and the guys want to be him. But what’s on the outside isn’t usually what’s on the inside. His dark, broody attitude is because of all the things he hides on the inside.
A split second decision made by Fallon at a party to help Jesse and Cason changes the path both of them were on. While both try and fight their attraction to each other is is absolutely no denying it. From the very first time they meet they are meant to be.
While Jesse has been dealing with Jax, his ex best friend who is a jerk, drug dealer, thug, Jax brings in something so much more dangerous, Marcus. When the monster of Fallon’s nightmares comes back out to play everything changes. She has to tell Cason, Jesse, and Jade what happened to her. When her mother gets hurt because of her, or she blames herself things really take a turn.
Callie Rae made me feel all the things. I cried, I cried and didn’t realize I was crying until my eyes were blurry. I fell in love with all of these characters, not just Jesse and Fallon. The side characters help make this book what it is.
From start to finish When Shadows Follow is amazing! It’s captivating and a rollercoaster of a ride.
OH MY STARS! This book! The angsty teenage pain and love! It was absolutely everything and more for me. Fallon is so broken when she comes to Cherry Creek. You learn later in the book why she just wants to keep to herself and hide literally in the shadows so no one will take notice of her. But enter the big man on campus with Jesse. Their push and pull was beyond magnetic regardless of how much Fallon wants nothing to do with it. But Jade pulls her out of her shell and helps Fallon live again. I adored their friendship so much. But as being friends with Jade, puts her in the direct path of Jesse. These two are intense right from the start. He chases away the nightmares for her in so many ways. She is the breath that Jesse needs to breathe. These two just made sense once they got past the way they loved to antagonize each other!
As a whole, this is just wow. I cannot say enough about how amazing this story is. Between the concept, the passion and every emotion plus the way it all plays out at the ending?!?! IT IS A MUST READ! My heart is so for Cason though! You will totally know what I mean as you read this story. Especially with how him and Fallon connect on a friendship level. My heart aches! All I can say is OH MY STARS!!! This book is a must read and excuse me while I go devour the second book!
This was my first time reading something written by Callie Rae and it definitely will not be the last. I really enjoyed reading When Shadows Follows , the plot was interesting and there is more to the characters than meets the eye.
Fallon just moved to a new town with her mom and on her first day of school she catches eye of the resident bad boy, Jesse. At first, Jesse does not let Fallon get close to him and keeps her at arms length, often acting impolitely and rude. A lot of weight is being put on Jesse’s shoulders because of who his family is. His father in particular puts a lot of pressure on him because he wants him to take over family business. Jesse doesn’t let anyone get close to him besides his sister Jade and cousin Cason because everyone just wants to use him, one way or another. Fallon eventually starts to wear him down and they cross the line between indifference and affection.
Fallon just wants to keep her head down and stay invisible to the rest of her classmates. She had to pick up the pieces after something bad happening to her and all she wants to do is to stay under the radar. That plans goes to hell when she helps out Jesse and Cason in a fight. From then on she is under Jesse’s protection which makes her anything but invisible. I liked that she defied Jesse and didn’t let him step all over her, most of the time doing the exact opposite of what she’s been told. She is stubborn and able to think for herself, which Jesse finds insanely infuriating. He is used to people doing what he tells them.
The chemistry between Fallon and Jesse burns hot. I love the kind of books where the bad boy is attracted to the new girl but does not know how to deal with that attraction, so he acts like a jerk towards the heroine, but then at the same time is protective of her. This fits When Shadows Follow to a T.
There is a ton of intrigue with Jesse and his friends always fighting a drug-dealing gang and when Fallon’s past comes back to bite her, things are going down the hill fast.
Be warned that this book ends on a cliffhanger and the second book is not out yet. But the cliffhanger definitely makes you beg for more!
5 stars for When Shadows Follow by Callie Rae. This is book one in the Cherry Creek series. Wow this book. I don’t even know where to begin with this book. I have had to sit back for a couple days to gather my thoughts. I was just completely blown away. It was absolutely brilliant. This book is a YA mature high school romance. It is filled with angst, suspense, and so much drama. Fallon and Jesse bring us a ton of different emotions. Fallon and Jesse bring us a ton of different emotions. Fallon is trying to blend in. She is hiding an emotional secret that makes this story everything that it is. Jesse has issues of her own. Even with these two’s issues they still have a chemistry that leaps off the pages. While most might say that Fallon drew them in, for me it was Jesse. I felt like I needed to learn about him and why he is the way he is. I was intrigued and captivated by him. I must warn you do not start this unless you have time to finish because you will not want to put it down. However, the ending may have you throwing something in anger and confusion. The cliffhanger is a real dozie. Some may be mad at the cliffhanger but I love a good cliffy and this one was utterly brilliant. Great work Callie Rae.
No way!
I went five stars – I know I am normally really stingy with my stars but
Holy crispy crackers!
This isn’t a typical bully romance –
There is actually a strong story here that is easy to devour yet still hints at mysterious unknowns and hidden possibilities
Like dear old dad? What’s up with the attitude?
Fallon is trying to get a fresh start – evading her emotions might be a better definition but she is still young and I can see where her mom is coming from –
Her nightmare well take time to heal
Right now she needs space and shadows –
She needs to be unseen
But maybe she is confused about what she needs?
Jesse is still a bit of an enigma for me – He is harboring his own burdens- His own skeletons – ones we are yet to be privy too
The on-page chemistry between these two was almost tangible
I found myself enraptured by them
The relationship between them felt natural –
It is a slow build but it burns something fierce
Yes there were some things I was not completely on board with
that is me though I can be really particular
I have all kinds of WTH questions but I think they will be answered in book two
Oh and this ends on a major betrayal twisty cliffy
So… Yeah don’t throw your reader because you will need it to see how this plays out
I am on to book two now
Great debut novel. Beautifully written new adult, high school romance. Four and a half
Lots of angst, drama and suspense thrown in, with relatable well developed characters and storyline. This was a pleasure to read.
Only love to hate moment is the cliffhanger, of course . Looking forward to When Shadows Fracture.
5 FABULOUS STARS!! I love Jesse and Fallon…..these two stole my heart. All my emotion buttons were pushed all the way through this book. Callie Rae has gained a new reader….she is an amazing author. I need the next book.
Wow! This book had me hooked in the first chapters and I could not put this book down until I finished it, in one sitting.
This is the story of Fallon and Jesse, with Jade and Caden. From the moment Fallon and Jesse meet, there’s an undeniable attraction. She wants to keep her head down and stay out of sight due to her past, but he won’t let her. An unexpected appearance brings Fallon’s current reality of a fresh start clashing down and her past is revealed. This story is filled with unease, suspense, pain and adoration as events unfold.
I went to this book totally blind. Not having a clue what I was about to read. It came highly recommend by my friend.
I just can’t believe this a debut novel. I’m speechless, it was so bloody good. All I can say is I need to dive straight into book 2. I’m dying to know what happens next with these characters.
What the F*CK did just happen?
I got this book as an ARC in exchange for honest review.
Before I even started reading this book I didn’t think highly of it as it is a trilogy (if I’m correct). But after getting only like 5 pages in, I was captivated by this male character! And that was when I needed to continue. Lame, I know, but I just knew I need to know him and what his deal is…and I wanted for him to end up with the main character.
I didn’t expect this book to draw me in as much as it did. I rarely find books that excite me so much, but when they do I’m all in until there’s no turning back and this book definitely did that to me.
I loved it all about this book! The storyline, the characters, the development, the trouble, the love…just everything!
The way the book ended got me throwing my hands up in the air with frustration and anger! It was amazing. Now I can’t wait to know what happens next.
I’m absolutely blown away. This book was AMAZING.
Angst, drama, deception, danger and one hell of a cliffhanger await you in this book!
