On the eve of announcing his run for Congress, a charismatic Chicago politician causes a deadly accident. Panicked, he frames his best friend, a good-hearted alcoholic, and flees the scene. As one man tries to pick up the pieces of his shattered life, the other embarks on a meteoric rise to political stardom. But when a dogged detective digs deeper into the case, the political superstar must … decide just how far he is willing to go to keep his dark secret. Author Joseph Hayes combines page-turning suspense with a poignant tale of inspiration and redemption as he asks, is “the greater good” just a lie we tell ourselves to justify the sins we commit when no one is watching?

Very goid frim start to finish
The political story is hauntingly believable. I can imagine a politician doing the terrible deed in the book.
I knew what would happen at the end but I really enjoyed how we got there. Good read.
This is the best book! Hayes has a storyline that grabs you from the start and keeps you reading till the end. Definitely a page turner you cannot put down. His main characters, Blair and Danny are so well developed you will love and admire Danny and question Blair’s morality. An excellent story with so much emotion you will need Kleenex. I’m …
This was a book I could hardly put down, once I started reading it. The characters were well-developed; the different voices/perspectives made it more interesting; the story built as the book went along; and there were surprises that kept it interesting.
The plot will leave you thinking…deeply
The title lured me into opening the pages of this well-written novel about true integrity vs the person others think we are.
This captivating story of two friends, one went on to aspire great career goals, the other fought an alcoholic demon. The amazing twists and unexpected, yet very believable, plot …
Suspenseful, creates intrigue, a real pageturner, holds interest to the last page
I want to read more books by this author
I enjoyed it. Makes you think about choices you make, good and bad, and how they effect others.
Another great book by Mr. MEFFORD! Really good good!
Kept me reading
no interest
I found the story line and language a little boring.
Well thought out
I did not like the ending to this book. I feel he got away with murder.
I did not care for this book. The characters seemed contrived and were not believable. I’m not saying some readers may not like it, just not for me. The premise is good, but the character development isn’t.
Maddening
Only read a few pages of this book as I could not get into it. I book has to catch me right off the bat, or I will not continue. No disrespect to the author – just my particular way of evaluating books to read.
